A unique opportunity to ride aboard a former London Underground D78 stock train, which has been converted to become a DMU now known as the Class 230's.
In this DEV we travel over the Marston Vale line from Bedford to Bletchley over what was once an extensive cross country line from Oxford to Cambridge - more known as the Varsity line - from where is was sadly closed in 1967.
Featured also is a history of the rolling stock, a quick visit to the old Bedford St. John's station, explore Lidlington, see the mansions of Woburn Abbey and Bletchley Park.

I live in Bedford, a five minute walk from St Johns on Ampthill road. In 50 plus years, I've never used the service. I booked tickets today, to travel to Fenny Stratford in a couple of weeks time, that's what brought me to this video. Really interesting video.
Thank you, Paul.
Rosanna.
Thank you very much for an exemplary narration and your voice very professional indeed. What an excellent job you've done on the rating this video and again thank you.
Thank you very much for uploading this video I found it very useful and informative. Great job and very professionally put together.
Pure.
Despite the unusual commentary I really enjoyed the journey. I lived in Bedford for a number of years so the area is familiar to me. I recall the brickworks chimneys and the model village at Stewartby. Thank you for posting.
Let's us hope this Varsity line becomes a reality in the not to distant future - very nice video!
Hi i was involved in making the First Cab Ride on the Branch and the History of the line in 1996 under the name Runfurrow Videos. nice to see up date on the line. Regards Ron. Video and sound for Runfurrow videos,
Another excellent production. Thanks for posting this top-notch video.
Very nice, professional video! I hope you do plan more on other lines, keep up the good work!

Thoroughly enjoyed the video and the audio commentary. Living Canada, it's always nice to watch these cab-ride videos from the UK and Europe. Passenger rail service in North America is very scarce.
A real pleasure to journey on this local line with your video, thanks to the interesting and well-researched background detail in the spoken narrative, which makes such a positive difference to the normal train cab ride.
Encouragingly, East West Rail construction continues apace, although the Aylesbury spur is likely to be delayed by a year or two because of the slow progress of HS2, with which it'll share a section of route.
Nice Thanks to all for the Video
Great video, very informative
Excellent 👍
Did this line back in 1989 from Bletchley the driver stopped in the middle of nowhere jumped out before climbing back up to the cab of the 117 holding a huge pheasant of which he must have hit on the way from Bedford on the previous working? His comment was ''That's Sunday dinner sorted'' with a smile, and off we went. Made me laugh. There were a few more chimneys that were awaiting destruction that are not there now in this video.
At least it didnt die for nothing, and was just left on the tracks.
Thanks to all involved for the video, really enjoyed seeing this lovely rural journey. The script though is at times not so well delivered, often sounding either under-prepared or delivered without real understanding of the words and their meaning at times. The passage about the history of the Woburn estate at c.36' will serve to demonstrate the point. Perhaps another time, run the delivery of the script past a friendy someone of experience for them to offer some tips on phrasing, modulation, and to check that what's being spoken is thoroughly understood? Nonetheless, thank you so much for posting anyway, so nice to see.
Fine video but it confused Gordon Welchman with Alan Turing!
And now in 2023, the 150s are coming back !
Hopefully we will see the upgrades soon as they are working on the Bletchley to Bicester section, including replacing the Bletchley flyover

Paul, your voice has improved. Sounds much better. 🏳🌈
Is the EAST WEST RAIL going to use this line as well.
Beeching never advocated closing the Varsity line as he considered it important, however BR management had other ideas!
Excellent video - thank you for (re-)uploading it. The tributes to the codebreakers at Betchley Park was a really good way to bring it to a close - it helps to put - and keep - Bletchley Park on the map. The tribute to Gordon Welchman was particularly fitting as he is a largely-unknown figure in the codebreaking saga. However, I have to tell you that the footage that accompanied his tribute was of Alan Turing. That said, Alan, too, was a key player in the codebreaking effort - and much more famous than Gordon Welchman.
London Northwestern Railway Class 230
RIP vivarail. thankfully there are still class 484s on the isle of wight. transport for wales will have 3 carriage class 230s between wrexham central and bidston
Shame that the Class 230 can’t operate on the Marston Vale because of the collapse of Vivarail. And London Northwestern Railway are inheriting 3 Class 150 Sprinter DMUs from Northern to replace the Class 230.
Shame this line is currently shut. Vivarail have gone into administration and the train operator has had to cancel all services as maintenance was under contract with Vivarail
There will be a rail replacement bus service for a month according to friends that have to use this service for work in Bletchley.
@@cannyexplorer5357 actually there is still a rail replacement bus service for the time being
@@LokiAvivson full service will begin in 2024 as 3 150 sprinter units are set to transfer
The commentary is a little stilted. Was it done by a computer that would explain it?
Converted District line train London underground d stock train to run on mainline
Very interesting but the commentary leaves something to be desired, I think it's done by a robot with a posh accent.
No comment! 😉🐨🇦🇺
