  • Why Maasin City Airport a.k.a. Panan-awan Airport is not yet fully operational?
The ongoing project at Maasin City Airport involves expanding the landside facilities and extending the runway on the airside.
The landside area currently includes the passenger terminal, water tank, power house, paved parking area, and service road. Additional facilities such as the Entry Arc, Guard House, Perimeter Fence, Slope Protection, Additional Parking Area, Additional Water Tank, PSG Bridge, Cargo Terminal, Aerodome Rescue and Fire Fighting Bldg, and Control Tower are also under construction.
At airside area, the main objective of the project is to enhance the runway. The current runway is 1.3 kilometers long and 30 meters wide. The allocated budget allows for widening it to 45 meters and extending its length to 1.8 kilometers. However, to meet the operational requirements set by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), an additional 200 meters of runway length and a 90 meters Runway End Safety Area (RESA) are needed. The CAAP mandates a minimum runway length of 2 kilometers, plus the RESA, for the airport to operate at full capacity.
Securing funding for the remaining 200 meters of runway length and a 90 meters RESA is crucial to ensure that the airport meets the required standards and operates safely and efficiently.
As of now, the flying school from Cebu is utilizing the facilities at Maasin City Airport, specifically the runway, from 8 am to 12 pm for flight training purposes. During this designated time, the runway is exclusively reserved for the flying school's activities.
Moreover, the runway also serves as a crucial resource for emergency situations, allowing the airport to respond promptly to any urgent needs that may arise.
