How could anyone with a straight face say the internal combustion engine hasn't changed in 40 years?
I remember leaving the house in the morning in the 80s & the smell in the air was unleaded fuel.
Utter madness to say nothing has changed.
The engine.... most of the cleanness is done in the exhaust and is primarily catalytic converter technologies plus fuel chemistry. The actual engineering of an engine hasn't changed much, tolerances have been increased. But its like the pushbike... the amount of improvement you can make on it is very minimal at best.
@@DS9FANINDADEFIANT not quite thermal efficiencies have increased from 16% or less in the 50s to 33% in the 80s and they are talking about 50% efficiencies today ADD to that cats and engine managements such as shutting down cylinders
@@DS9FANINDADEFIANT Hmm. 40 years ago, engines were mostly 2 valve pushrod (or belt driven OHC) unless you bought Japanese. Turbocharging was an exception. Most engines now are 4 valve, turbocharging is normal. Iron blocks were common then, now you'd be pressed to find one which isn't Al. We've gone from carburettors, to single point fuel injection, to multipoint, and now to direct injected gasoline. Durability has gone from sub 100k to over 200k. They look the same, but every component has has been optimised to heck. The only place we've gone backwards is moving away from variable valve train, which is a shame.
@basilwatson1 that's why I said 30 years ago. Since the 90s.
@johnwade1095 durability has increased yes, the availability of computers has meant that digital designing of components with stress simulations have been possible, cars can be made nearly identically and have a known expected faliure down to the nearest month. Cars are more reliable than they once were due to this, but they are also designed to fail/do exactly what they say on the tin. Most old cars you would have some that would last 25 years and some that would last 3. The range was insane. however the essential technology hasn't actually changed all that much. We still use piston engines because theyre the most efficient and reliable way to turn an explosion into mechanical energy.
I love engines. I wish the technology would be around for another 50 years, but I doubt it. We're already seeing evidence of severe change. Most technologies are converging in fully electric and hybrid technologies. Combustion may in 20 years only act as a backup and in 50 years maybe a hobby. It's sad. But at the same time. It's actually kind of cool to see change.

@StevenWhyte-c4l All new cars under warranty have zero servicing after two years.🙄
If it's an old EV out of warranty (which no one with a brain would buy), then it's still recommended to change the brake fluid after 2 years.🙄 You will also need tyres, brake discs/pads, wiper blades, suspension components, CV joints, bushings and seals just like every car.🙄
My 27 year old Volvo has required minimal servicing the last 2 years.😎

Geoff this is the absolute best video you’ve ever done. Well done sir. Keep doing these as Smeghead is so far up his own dark tunnel I’m not surprised he can’t see the truth.
Paradigm “smeghead” of his generation.
I loved this
Fully agree. Fantastic job Geoff. Made him look like a complete idiot. Love it.
As you said. Each to their own. But what you dont mention is the depreciation of EV’s out way the cost in fuel. Unless you ‘rent one’ and you will be paying forever. If that’s what you want that’s great. But not for me. Give me a classic and potential to get a good % of the cost back. Not quite the same for EV. you will never see a used 30 or 40 year old EV.
@StevenWhyte-c4l try running your EV using only public chargers like most of Britain will have to do. I agree it’s a game changer cost wise if you have private home charging. But what EV owners never include in running costs is the massive depreciation. Add all that in and compared to a standard ICE car and your quids out. That’s not even taking into account the road tax on EV’s from next April.
They don’t like it up em! Brilliant video Geoff 😂😂😂
As someone who lived in Norway - as soon as you step out of Oslo you're in the jungle with real winters. No EV would survive that, it's a fucking joke. They drive vehicles like Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol over there.
Having visited Norway I wondered about that after seeing ICE 4X4s in remote areas with big rectangular blocks of lights on the front.
I also wondered that as norway is so vast mountainous and has very cold winters
Eh... My brother lives near Jessheim(not far from Gardermoen airport for those unfamiliar with the area) and it's a bl**dy ice hole. He recently passed his old 2016(I think) Nissan Leaf to his wife and got a MAXXUS 3 van for himself. No problems, really.
I live in the north-west with an ancient(2014) e-Berlingo Van, and my biggest issue is the ice road up to my parents home. And that is handled with good chains.
I don't really see your issues, unless you're thinking about the EV busses in Oslo?
They're now being fitted with diesel-powered heaters for days with extreme cold...
Well... I live here. I don't know how big you consider Oslo to be, but I see no jungle here. Sure I loose a few miles in -20C, but that is rare. It was problems in the two most northern counties. The infrastructure for the rest of Norway along major and not so major roads ar OK, even for my 2012 Leaf.
@@norwegiangadgetman According to statistics, 2024 lowest temperatures for Oslo was nine days in January and one in February (max temp -12.6C).
So yeah, things get blown completely out of proportions wrt impact, not that it probably sucked for those affected. Also, learning from it and adjusting.
Guess that's the good news. The bad news is if global warming causes AMOC collapse, Norway (NW Europe) might be heading into an actual ice age again.
And on the lunchtime news today the EV companies are asking for help from the government as they won’t be able to meet the targets set for the sale of EV’s.
‘Help’ means ‘Incentives’ that means OUR TAXES.
And what exactly do you think happen to YOUR TAXES once reality of global warming effects starts to kick in?

EVs run on electricity generated by pixie dust - just ask Robert LLewlyn.
Their economy is powered by irony.
Number 8 is the highest I found
I'm Norwegian and I just want to make it clear: norwegians doesn't really choose to drive EV's. They are forced to do it, because of the insane taxes on petrol and diesel powered cars(no taxes on EV's, just a really small amount if the car cost 60k+ euro. "Nobody" would buy EV's here if all cars had the same tax level.
I am also Norwegian and i'm afraid i disagree. Everyone i know here is happy with their EV. Yes there is a financial incentive, but we didn't have our arms twisted into buying them. It's not like there weren't alternatives - i could have bought top spec Octavia 4x4 for the same price as my Model 3. That's hardly a bad car
@@15bit62you just admitted he’s correct as there IS a financial incentive so it’s not a level playing field. The government has interfered with the market to increase EV sales.
That’s what I suspected was going on. EVs = Good; ICE = Bad.
@@15bit62 Ofcourse thay are happy when the government is funding those EVs + free parking +++. The thing people not understand is that the need for EVs was created by the government it did not happen due to normal market dynamics, the need for EVs was never there, is been forced opon us. Always when government wants to force things to the public it ends in disaster after a while.
@@johnflavin1602 Define "level playing field". All countries apply varying amounts of tax to cars, petrol/diesel and electricity and juggle them to adjust the market as they choose.
It's not quite as simple as "Good" and "Bad" in norway. The incentives for zero emission cars have been in place since the early 2000's, long before any practical EVs existed. There has always been a stronger societal drive to be more environmentally friendly in scandinavia than other european countries. So when the cars came along that were actually worth buying (basically the Leaf and Model S), people were willing to buy them.

Great headlines today on several newspaper's websites.
"Diesel New Car sales outpace electric amongst 'flawed' Net Zero targets".

For example, from the same data source that produced your quoted headline...
Total BEV sales in September now 3 times the amount of diesel.
YTD diesel sales down 12% whilst BEV sales up 13% compared with last year.
🤯
Hear that on the radio earlier diesel sales up 17%
@@davejohnson3474
Private diesel sales up 17% which equates to an upturn of 1367 cars.
Overall diesel sales down though as the leasing area for them is dying on its arse!😥
@@DwaynePipes except it is in several papers, including EVangelist papers like the Guardian and the Independent (who are mostly making excuses).

It is pretty clear that the ECEVs are not ready for the mainstream, and the mainstream are not ready for them. Zealots keep pushing them though, and as with NetZero won't be happy until they have pushed civilisation to collapse.
@@DwaynePipes But who is buying the EV's......Lease companies and busuness users for tax perks that we the general public are paying for and in another three years when they hit the second hand market with very few Private buyers then just watch the depreciation take off and also car firms and dealers go bust. In Norway we saw plenty of ICE vehicles, maybe as EVs do not perform so well with cold weather.
What a load of bollocks 😂
@@FamilyMorcChannelperhaps you would be so kind as to provide numbers to back up your claim then. I know people who have handed back their Corsa EV because the fully charged range in winter was around 80 miles
@@shuddafukkup I've had multiple EVs (for my sins) as a 3rd car and every one of them had appalling range drop off below approx 5 degrees. So when people, including my EV owning friends, claim that winter range reduction isn't a thing I instantly know they are liars and it's not worth engaging further on the subject.
25% of the cars are EVs, above 90% of the new cars are EVs. So sure - you should see a lot of ICEs.
Of course you saw plenty of ICE vehicles. The stats are for sales of new cars, where most indeed are EVs.
There is no ban on still owning or buying/selling used ICE. If on track, you can't buy new ICE in Norway in 3 months.
Norway also has a huge hydro-electric energy resource , so much so we import it into the U.K.
I drilled the tunnels for the hydro at Kvilldal, the largest in Norway - which irks a bit considering how much we pay for juice.
What technique did you use for drilling and do you think Norway can expand hydro capacity significantly?
@@Loanshark753 we used a 4 boom drill jumbo with 3 meter integral drill steels and various drill patterns to suit the rock ( folded gneiss ) which was around 60 000 psi compressive and very demanding on tooling. Norway can always expand its hydro , topography and economics dictate what is feasible.
Those cables was a big mistake. Many families could not afford food after paying for the electricity that increased a lot (sometimes 500-800% more). That is why they stopped other projected cables to the UK, Denmark etc.
That is a fantastic piece of editing and so true. I, as a pensioner, will never, ever, be able to afford an electric car. I drive a Skoda Octavia estate 1.6 diesel, that does shed loads of miles to the gallon. I filled up in Sheffield, drove to Southampton, next day drove a short distance to Portsmouth, ferry to Bilbao. Heading for Almeria, we had to fill up 100 kilometres south of Madrid. That was about €65. How long would my journey have taken me in an EV? And how much in electricity charges.
In Norway, an Octavia cost more than a Tesla Model 3 or Y due taxes. They also fall quickly in value, so a used Tesla is fairly cheap (for cars in Norway). A used 7 seater Tesla Model X is often significantly cheaper than a used 7-8-9 seat VW Caravelle. That is bad for large families for example, that have to drive 10-16 year old vans.
Alot less than Diesel lol a hell of alot less
There were no comments about the time it took to make the drive. I drove a total of 1300 kilometres from Sheffield to Almeria and averaged 100 kilometres per hour. (95% motorway) With stops, about 14 hours. Before anyone comments about driving times, read my original comment.
TOTAL Refuelling time, 15 minutes.
@@lesrylett636 As a pensioner you should not have to hurry. Neither should you drive for 14 hours. But to answer your question; With an EV you can drive 1000 km in 10 hours, charging included.

I've visited Norway quite often and yes I can confirm EVs are really popular and I don't recall ever seeing a charity shop or food bank?
It's not in the EU and like Switzerland hasn't got food banks and charity shops on ever corner.
There are alwas a few things missing when talking about EV sales in Norway. They had no tax on buying a EV, and they had extra high taxes on ICE cars making the ICE car more expensive to buy. Not sure how it is now. I see less EV's on the roads here in Sweden, not sure why. 2 years ago there was VW ID3 everywhere. but I hardly see anyone today.

Those fuel efficient engines were being designed from the late 60s early 70s as “lean burn” and before the introduction of lead free fuel. Then the introduction of catalytic converters made engine designs change again. Together with electronic controls, sensors and materials, these IC engines have become very efficient, even big powerful engines which shut down cylinders when not required are efficient. The air above all countries is constantly moving, therefore the air above a very environmentally friendly country will be contaminated and mixed with air from polluting countries. That is why just a few weeks ago the sun was shining but in the UK we did not see the sun due to smoke from forest fires in Canada. We can do our bit but unless the World comes together, also stops all these conflicts little old UK will not change the atmosphere. We also need to cut the overpopulation as just breathing and living pollute the air. Thanks great show.
one thing to note there are 40% fewer people in the country of Norway than in the just Dallas/Fort Worth
So, we could drive around in diesel tanks and shoot down bald headed eagles - and the impact would be less than the car pollution from Texas... Still, we got to start somewhere. Personally I notice the EVs only due to less sound in slow moving trafic, and no exhaust when I use my bike along a road. At high speed, tire noice is higher than engine noice.
Here is my fact check after some quick googling: UK has produced slightly more oil than Norway since the beginning of the offshore oil adventure in the 1960s. UK has about the same number of EVs on the roads as Norway. That pretty much nullifies this entire video, right?

This man is deluded. Great show Geoff.
