A FIERCE mum is wearing her severe burn scars like diamonds. Alyssa McDonald, 27, from Stillwater, Oklahoma, was severely burned at two years old when she accidentally pulled a pot of boiling butter off the stove and onto herself. She endured surgeries every other year until she was 17 and struggled to face her scars. But everything changed in high school when she woke up one day and decided enough was enough - she was going to learn to love her scars and ‘wear them like diamonds.'

Self acceptance is key to dealing with a condition like this. When I was young, I struggled with self acceptance and I remember wishing with all my heart I had legs. When I grew up, I learnt to see that God let this happen in my life for a purpose. I can't believe she said she would not change anything about her scars if she was to go back. Wow! She is so strong. Thanks so much for sharing our stories online. They for sure impact many and I hope people are inspired by them!

Exactly! And what she's saying not only helps with physical scars you can see, but also the scars that are hidden from sight that I've carried for over 30 years! And after going to therapy, I was finally able to release some of the scars from abuse from my dad! And that freeing feeling, whether you're dealing with visible or hidden scars, is truly one of the best feelings in the world!

I cried when she said she wouldn't ever even think about changing having her scars, because having them allowed her to help people. So much love to her. I have scars of my own, which took me a long time to accept, so it is so wonderful to see others who are thriving despite adversities. ❤

I love that she said "Kids are blunt" instead of "Kids are cruel." Little kids are refreshingly honest and curious and usually don't mean harm-don't get me wrong, there are some bullies out there-but it's really up to us (the receiver) how we internalize their comments. This woman chose to use those comments as fuel for her emotional strength and to carry that torch of suffering to help others. She is the definition of beautiful.

A similar accident happened to my little brother....
He got burned by hot oil...on his neck.
He was ashamed of his neck before
He always wore scarfs.. even in the summer.
But then he got a really good friend
That one friend really changed his life
I don’t know what his friend told him...
But I’m really thankful for that one friend.
Now my brother is 13, and he’s confident with it.

I have to say that you are truly an inspiration, i was burned over 85% of my body with 2nd and 3rd degree burns when i was 9 yrs old and i am now 54 yrs old and it has still been a struggle for me.

I am in no way saying that mine is as extreme as hers, but something similar happened to me.
When I was about 2, I got my fingers “burned”/deformed when I was near a treadmill unattended. Since it is only about 3 fingers on one hand, I have been able to hide it from everyone. As a pianist, it does make playing a bit harder. I always wished to have pretty fingers or to be able to actually find a ring that fits. I may have to get surgery since my fingers are a bit bent.
I applaud this woman and her amazing courage. She will be a wonderful example of acceptance for her daughter. I hope that I can be as happy with myself one day as she is

I have severe exzema and it's really bad on my wrist so I used to always pray that they become better and I still do because some kids are so ignorant that they assume that I just need lotion.

Children get into all sorts of accidents; broken bones, cuts, scrapes -- even an accident like this. Doesn't mean whoever was watching them are bad people or cautiousness. No one is perfect. The amount of times I got into trouble when my mom looked away for half a second is amazing, and you can't claim you never got your parents into a frenzy when you were a child. That'd be hypocritical.

She went to Westwood elementary with my sister and I. When she first came, the school had all the students have a mandatory assembly in the auditorium to introduce her and make sure that all the students knew NOT to bully her. Glad she’s happy 😏

When my sister was little my family let a man stay at our house and he put hot oil in my sister’s cup, she took her cup thinking it was juice and got burned all over her body. My mom took her to the hospital , the doctors said she would be permanently scarred. So my mom took her home and a man who lived next door gave my mom medicine and leafs and told her how to treat my sisters burns. So my mom did as the man said. She closed the windows and never let my sister see herself in a mirror. Years later and my sister’s burns disappeared. She has no scars and no memory of the burns. (The man sadly passed away, but thanks to him my sister lived a happy life)

I pulled an iron on on my hand..when I was like one...my big sister was ironing on the bed..yes irresponsible...lol..thats when they had house phones in the kitchen...so she was a typical teenager...lol...but now shes passed on ...its been a few years but now when I look at my burn I laugh bcus I used to want to get rid of it...now I wouldn't trade it or change it..bittersweet

I got burned before on my chin arms legs and body and people used to bully me for it and I always thought of suicide but nowadays I stand up for my self and fight anyone that would make fun of me I will not be judged on by humans that show pity to me thou I still am feeling great, I burned the house down by accident me and my brother both have burns I got it worse he has his finger burned that's it and this video really made my day
