    Earth and Venus are closer to each other than mercury and Venus, so why doesn’t Venus prevent the moon from being tidally locked with earth? The moon should have a greater resonance than murcury.

  • @AntilleanConfederation
    @AntilleanConfederation 4 месяца назад +1

    So the moon is tidally locked due to its proximity to earth? Otherwise other gravitational forces would break it free of being locked around the earth? And the moon would then spin independently of its orbit?

    • @willoughbykrenzteinburg

      It's not accurate to say that the moon doesn't rotate. The moon does indeed rotate; it's just that it's rotational period is the same as its orbital period.
      To answer your question - the moon is a LOT closer to Earth - even relatively speaking - than Mercury is from other celestial bodies. YES is the answer to your question. The moon is close enough to Earth (only 240,000 miles), but far enough away from other objects that the tidal forces are insignificant compared to the Earth. One important thing to understand is that it is not the STRENGTH of gravity that creates a tidal force, but rather the VARIANCE that creates it. That is - a variance across the body itself. The moon is very close to Earth (astronomically speaking), so the force on one side of the moon is significantly different than the other side. It's this DIFFERENCE that creates the tidal force which causes tidal locking. There just isn't anything close enough to create this same kind of variance across the moon as the Earth does - just a quarter of a million miles away.
      Look at it this way - Mercury orbits 42ish million miles from the sun. Venus orbits 66ish million miles from the sun. There are periods of time where Venus is closer to Mercury than the sun is. The same cannot be said of our moon. To put this on the scale of the moon - it would be like the moon being 240,000 miles from the Earth and there being some other object just 380,000 miles from the Earth tugging on the moon. That's obviously not the case. The closest any other object gets to the moon would be Venus - which at its closest is about 40 million miles. This is well over 160 TIMES farther than the distance to the Earth. For this reason, there just isn't anything out there creating a tidal force on the moon anywhere near as significant as the Earth does.

    • @wuusadirass5789
      @wuusadirass5789 8 месяцев назад

      @@saad.bukhari Thats true, but that's what tidally locked is. The earths spin is irrelevant to the theory. Like if there was a bearing at earths center tidally locking the moon while the crust spins over it.

      @elie9845 8 месяцев назад

      Imagine if the earth was tidally locked to the sun, with one side constantly facing it. If the moon rotated on its own axis at such a slow pace then at some point someone on earth would see the other side of the moon. But nope, everyone sees the SAME side.
