I can and I really enjoyed watching this video! I love making peach ginger butter with my mom and I love canning tomatoes with my husband. Canning is so much fun and a lifelong skill that everyone should know!
Gosh I simply adore you! We often forage in the Autumn, Blackberries, apples and plums then we preserve and dehydrate!such a wonderful sustainable and old way of keeping in touch with the seasons cycles and of course beautiful memories and lessons for the children x
@@WithLoveKristina I've already made lingonberry jelly and candied rosehips. Plan to also do spiced currants, blueberry jam, crowberry jam, highbush cranberry ketchup and jelly, whole preserved crabapples in spiced syrup, and apple pie filling. Also possibly mushroom ketchup.
I loved this so much!! Canning is SOOOO much work and it never goes as planned.... lol!! Two tricks I've learned: score the peaches before boiling/chilling, and don't stack sealed jars on top of each other. Also loosen the rings for storing. Stacking cans and leaving rings tight can result in a broken seal/spoiled food. xo
I am a "canner" but in Australia we call it preserving fruit in jars, and making jam, sauces, and jellies. Nothing more satisfying than a pantry cupboard full of home made preserves. Sadly people are doing it less these days. Self sufficiency videos on RUclips are bringing these skills back thank goodness. Thank you for yours Kristina. I know you will inspire others! 🐾
You will be so happy come winter! This reminds me of when we grew up (I was raised by my Grandparents). They had 3 gardens and several fruit trees. The smells were heavenly in the Fall and we always appreciated those beautiful preserves in the cold winter months. I think your kids will appreciate these memories you are making too.
I'm late, but enjoying this video. I am blessed with some citrus trees, and the people from before left me a great tool. I don't know what it's called, but it is a wire basket on a stick. About half the basket extends a bit to where the wires fold over 90° so you can grab an pull the fruit, and the basket is big enough to grab a few fruit at a time so you aren't reaching every single time. I never looked for it, since before I didn't know about it & now I have one. But just wanted to pass on that they do exist & might be helpful✌❤
I recognize that metal contraption with the long handle that you used to strain the fruit from my childhood! My mom canned when I was young and I would watch her. It's a process! Good job getting through it.........everything looks delicious!
Hello Kristina. You worked very hard here. I have the exact canning book you have. I use it every year. This year I've had lots of produce from the garden. So I've been canning almost every day. I'll sure be looking forward to fall. Love this video. Thank you for sharing it.
If all you're looking for is a seal on your jams, then just shutting them is probably fine, but if you want to guarantee that your hard work has no chance to go bad, and in fact will stay good for many years, you need to process them in the water bath canner. To me, I'd much rather spend a bit of extra time, to make sure that it stays good for as long as I need it to. :) Also, it looks like you were using a fairly old book, which is fine, but I'd recommend cross-referencing with the newest canning instructions by Ball, to make sure that your processing information is correct. Better safe than sorry! Another great resource is the National Center for Home Food Preparation--they tell you how to properly can all sorts of things, including low-acid foods like white peaches and fish in a *pressure canner.* Not in the same jar lol!
Apple butter is one of my favorites I actually make up a large batch of apples in the roasting oven, cook down part as apple sauce and then the rest I cook down to thick butter. I love canning it is one of those things that is a lot of work but at the end of it you have all the delicious food for enjoyment later and it is so nostalgic for me because my grandparents are the ones that taught me primarily my grandpa and I have so many wonderful memories of hours gardening, harvesting and the preserving that harvest with him. I have a canning book from 1943 that my grandma gave me and it is something I treasure and actually keep it in our fireproof safe when not using just to keep it protected in case of fire or pests (might be a bit much but 🤷♀️)
Apple butter is soo good! I love how easy it is! And honestly, I don't blame you for keeping that canning book in a fireproof safe, the nostalgia and memories are totally worth protecting. That's such a special thing to have!
I love growing my own fruits and vegetables. Canning is a labor of love. Its more fun when you have a partner. My husband cans with me or my mom. Its a wonderful feeling grabbing a jar in the winter knowing you made it. ❤
I really enjoyed this video. Growing up in the Deep South, every summer me, my grandmother, and my Mom would spend days canning. It was such a production.🤣 I swore that I would never can again.🤣🤣 now that canning seems to back in vogue, I want to try it again. I applaud your very hard work. We had the same big ole black enamel pot and the canning tongs that you have. ✌️💕
Sooo much fruit! I'm glad all your hard work paid off. My grandma used to make plum jelly from her Santa Rosa and Satsuma plums trees every year. We would get to help pick and prep when she did the Concord grape jelly. I'm going to try canning for the first time this year with the fruit from my Strawberry tree. I found a jam recipe and a crumble recipe I'm going to try.
One of the best videos you’ve ever made! This was so fun and inspiring to watch. Great job!! Also, your Outlander outfit and hairstyle were amazing! The hairstyle suits you, you looked gorgeous!
Thank you this was great . I love your kitchen so adorable. And those vintage pots / bowls ands pans . Lovely cannine is something I have always wanted to do I must loo into. Your honesty is always so wonderful.. love it
I have the same fabric, your shirt is made of, in my stash and have been wondering what to make with it. Your shirt is so cute I think I might attempt a shirt with it. I love canning all the wonderful fruits and veggies we get from the garden. It's not just you who can't find lids in the stores right now. We haven't been able to find lids in any of our stores where I live since last year. And just a note, but filling jars with hot jam and just flipping them upside down to seal without processing is an unsafe canning practice. Always process to get it hot enough to kill any bacteria. I have a couple really great safe canning practice facebook groups if you're interested. Love your videos they are always so real and cute.
I’m interested in the canning groups :) If you are willing to share. Around here the stores are finally getting in lids that were ordered back in 2020. Still not easy to find and there are limits so everyone gets a fair chance
This is my husband and my first year canning because we finally have a big enough garden to make it worth while. So far we've made pickles and tomatoe sauce. Though, I did have to escape the house when I let him make a batch of spicy pickles, overall canning is a good experience for me. I'm freezing some veggies, too. I definitely like having some food we grew ourselves saved for later.
I recently discovered your channel and it is so charming! I love your pluck and creativity. My ex Mother-in-Law had the same strawberry pots and pans and it made me smile to see them. I live in the South and I remember one of them was the pot she made her sweet tea in, so it was quite stained.
Great job! I enjoyed this video, I love all things canning. Btw I loved day 3 hair style! How to video on how to do that would be wonderful!! Love everything you do!
I've got some vintage books (and also my 80 y/o Nana lives literally underneath my apt.) so I SHOULD be able to to perserving and canning - I'm just shite at it haha!
Lovely video! I had a garden and canned for the first time last summer - but have since moved and was not able to this summer. Hopefully I will be able to be in a place that I can do it again soon!
Oh I hope you are too! Now that I've broken through my nervousness with canning (and learned how to do jelly properly, ahaha!) I'm definitely going to be doing it yearly.
Loved this!! Thank you so much for sharing and filming all of this. I can't wait to can one day and these videos are really helpful. I'd love to see pear footage.
I really enjoyed this one. Your outfits were cute, my favorite being the last one. Your hair was cute too being down . I nevee my knew how to can so this was interesting. Where do you plan to store all of those yummy jars?
@@WithLoveKristina I would love a pantry lol. This house doesn't have one which is strange. We have a little cabinet and it has just enough space for about a month's worth if I use my tetris skills and stacknit correctly 🤣 One day I will have land and storage the way we want
This is a really cute video and definitely enjoyable to watch, but when you put the lids onto your jars without wiping off the rims, I definitely cringed, lol. I can appreciate the lack of counterspace I a tiny kitchen. Cooking dinner is difficult, let alone canning, dehydrating or soap making, sigh 🙄 Overall, awesome video 💕
I loved this video as I have just started canning this year! My youngest is grown and I’m just starting late bloomer! It is a lot of wrk so hard with kids running around.. have you revisited canning since this video?
What my family, & I have done is use the dishwasher. Wash, with 2 rinses. This leaves it very hot! They're ready to fill with anything. Then after they are all filled, instead of the water bath, put them back in the washer, & they'll seal after just a rinse. But if you aren't sure, you can do 2. You can fit a mass amount of jars for this in a dishwasher! Out everyway I've ever tried, this is the best.
@@WithLoveKristina I don't have one anymore either. 😭 Thankfully I don't have to wash up for 4 kids! Sorry, at least it's worth it for your sweet kids.
I would do that but my grandpa was a carpenter and was always hypersensitive about hot stuff on wood lol hence the card table 😆 his voice has never left the back of my mind
@@runaroundsue2199 bahahaha my dad was the same way! Our kitchen table is a 1950s one, no wood in sight - and I got it off the side of the road so ummmm... it's mean for wear and tear
