Hello mate! I never studied electronics, therefore I have no idea about circuits, but watching your videos I have learned a lot. they are very clear and really helpful. now I am encouraged to solder the circuits for my guitars. greetings from Argentina.
Late to the party but I’ve just followed this tutorial to rewire my partscaster with a 5way after my tone pot broke. I’m very inexperienced with soldering etc but this video was so easy to follow. Got it all working … once i discovered i needed different solder as the first batch had too high a melting point! Things got much easier after that 😂 Thank you so much for sharing!
It's a really good point his solder joints are really neat, mine are perfectly perfunctory but I will definitely try this method, plus I also noticed he uses thinner solder than I do which is interesting
Thanks so much for the detailed video on the soldering. I believe my extremely weak soldering skills should greatly improve after watching this! And, of course, thanks for the wiring information.
I just finished wiring a 5 way super switch and a TRS jack into my tele. I added a position that splits each pickup into its own channel and sends the bridge to the ring. Playing stereo in this way has been awesome. And then I also wired the pickups in series for the other position, which has been great as well. I'm using CS Nocaster '51 pups. I actually could have done this with a 4-way super switch, because running the stereo position in mono is the same thing as just using the neck position, but unfortunately I couldn't find a 4 position super switch.
Thanks for you time in putting this video up. It's great. One request, can you show how to wire the 5 way switch to achieve the Jerry Donahue set up. If you know the cap values as well
Love your videos man! You helped me wire my telecaster easily. I was wondering if you had a video you could direct me to got my newest Tele project, which is almost like the one in this video. It's a HH configuration Tele with the 5 way switch that gives you the 3 basic Tele positions plus the additional 2 options of splitting each coil without having to have a push-pull pot. I'd rather watch your video about if you have one. Thanks for your time and what you do!
Excellent production. Diagrams are absolutely first rate. Would dummy coils add any additional functionality? If so could you do one of your high quality videos? Thanks for excellent work. Danny G
This is brilliant, and gives me the confidence that I can do the mod myself. Thank you so much for posting it. I have two questions for you: a) You say at the end that no modifications are required to the pickups, but I've seen other videos that talk about the importance of changing the grounding under the pickups. Is this not necessary? b) I'd prefer that the order be 1) neck + top end, 2) neck, 3) both in phase parallel, 4) both half OOP, 5) bridge. Can you please confirm this would just be a matter of switching a few of the connections around? If so, I'm pretty sure I can figure it out, but a simple schematic would make you my superhero. For context, I'm starting with an American Elite Tele 3-way switch (neck/both out of phase/bridge), plus an S-1 switch for series/parallel. I'm not crazy about only having OOP, either in series or parallel, and I'm not a big fan of the S-1 switch (and am probably going to replace it with a stacked, concentric volume pot for a Fishman Powerbridge). Thanks again for the awesome walk thru.
When you look at the wiring on his website, you see that the order that you want is not possible due to the nature of the 5-way switch. I think it can be done with a 5-way super switch but I'm not sure if it will fit inside the cavity. I too think you need to ground the cover of the neck pickup seperately because this wiring reverses the polarity of the neck pickup in the two new positions. I'm not an expert but I'm seriously considering doing this mod myself (also trying to include the series mod) so if you have tried it or have any thoughts on this, feel free to contact me.
But there's no series 'in phase' or parallel 'out-of-phase' options. Wouldn't it be more flexible if you simply had a phase invert switch and had 1) Neck, 2) Neck & Bridge (parallel), 3) Bridge, 4) Neck & Bridge (series) 5) Neck only + extra top end? Then you can have Neck & Bridge in both parallel & series wiring, but both with in & out of phase options.
yes probably. there are several different ways to do it, this is the way I do it, nice and simple :) thanks for your input, definitely something to look into.
If I have an import style of switch, can I safely follow these instructions and connect the same numbered lugs on the import switch as on the Fender style switch as you have shown?
This is great, I want to do it with a strat im putting pickups from a jazzmaster in. But HOW do I get one of these 5000pf capacitors? I can’t find them on eBay at all. Is it in a different measurement than pf? Any help would be great
Hi There. Do you do custom diagrams? I need one for my Tele project with a Dimarzio Chopper T (Humbucker) and a Twang King (stacked humbucker) using a 5 Way Super Switch + 1 Tone + 1Vol. with this config: Positions: 1- Bridge Humbucker 2- Humbucker Bridge North Pole (split) 3- Bridge H + Neck Single (Parallel) Hum Cancelling 4- Bridge Split + Neck Single - Hum Cancelling 5- Neck Single Please let me know if it's possible to count on your expertise and how to proceed. Thank you!
Could I do this using Duncan design jazzmaster pickups from a squire on a 5 way switch? Should work the same right as they’re single coils? Also that’s the capacitor you’ve used on the selector? 333k? Trying to find one
hi, does anyone know if this works properly with a dual humbucker (HH) tele? I tried it but theres strange behaviours with the neck pickup; low volume but even higher when split which makes no sense. I think its to do with the ground wires and the capacitor not liking the humbucker splitting... Any help is appreciated
Hi Sir. Can you help me install a treble bleed in my Bill Lawerence Mod Circuit Telecaster? I already followed your directions but it turned out that the A500k volume potentionmeter does not work with the treble bleed. I assume that the cause of this problem is the Treble Bleed in the volume pot which did not occur in this video.
I did this but my 5th position is completely silent. It's probably an issue with the neck pickup cover. The problem is, I have SD PhatCat (P90) as a neck pickup. So I have 4 nice positions but the last one doesn't work at all. Should I modify the PhatCat and desolder the braided "ground" separate from the cover and solder a new ground wire to the cover? Any help appreciated.
Can you design appropriate wiring diagram please? I have a Telecaster with 2 Seymour Duncan Little 59 pickups fitted with 2 DiMarzio 250k push-pull pots and would like to get a versatile wiring setup with an appropriate switch either 3, 4, 5 or super 5. Can you please advise? Many thanks!
i have a better version, much more tonal difference.. just put a jumper wire from lug 1 to 8 (not a capacitor) and put a 0.0047 (472) or 0.0022 (222) cap between lug 7 and 8 (bridge hot n neck ground lead). so the post.4 is Out of Phase (duck quack) and post.5 same as post.4 but with the bridge in series with the cap (for solo boost). so much tonal difference.
@@pinacoco2 another modification, same like before but re-locate the cap. put the cap between lug 1 and 4. so it gives u out of phase with cocked wah on post 4 and neck with cocked wah on post.5 on my post before, the cap gives an effect on post.2. it makes bridge + neck cocked wah
Brillant! You made it easy and the fact you aren't very verbose, and stay on point, helps the listener stay engaged.
You are pretty much exclusively the reason I have started learning to do more complex wiring jobs... you make it seem so easy!

You taught me some great solder technique. Mine was a bit shit before I saw your style. Thank you

Thanx so much. Really great explanation. Step by step. Nice & simple version, love it.
keep on doing this high value content!

it was a ground loose omg. well now i have it set and done, sounds great thx man
Excellent job, we expect more videos!!!
Would really love a sound demo I’m very interested to hear what those other two positions sound like
I'll put a demo up soon, thanks for watching sir

I'm curious why you soldered the .022uF cap through two lugs of the tone pot 13:10 . I've only ever seen it soldered through one to ground.

Will this work on a HH Stratocaster with a 5way switch? Great vid 👍
Any vids on how this sounds?
Can you do the five way wiring but have the standard Tele options but have series and Hoop options
Good explanation thanks

hi on using this setup could i do the same for a nashville 3 single pickups and where would u put the hot wire from the middle pickup
Absolutely doing this in a tele build I’m doing
will that mod work with a humbucker in the bridge

Is all the wiring you’re using the same just different colors? Thx!
why are you "tinning" the lugs before soldering? Very new to this stuff
What did you use to ground both pots. Looks like a piece of thick solid wire.
Great thanks
What's the difference between keeping the tone cap on the tone pot vs wiring it between the vol/tone pot ie 50s, 60s, modern style.
We’ve got a video on the differences in capacitor wiring coming soon 👍
If I have an import style of switch, can I safely follow these instructions and connect the same numbered lugs on the import switch as on the Fender style switch as you have shown?
Can you do a video on how to wire a Les Paul or SG in series/parallel using 2 CTS push-pull pots?
Darthbrock03 ! Hi, just filmed this last weekend, so will ne published in the coming weeks.
I literally just did this mod to my melody maker!
Can you do a video on passive midrange tone controls?
Hi.Which two capacitors you used, i didn't understand. Thanks for the reply, regerds.
Hi …I like to know how to wire a pull up knob on my Nashville tele…. Thanks
are those full size pots or mini's?
Full size
Help please I did this 2 times new parts each time I get no sounds at all
Masterwork! Thanks!
gona do this
RIGHT NOW!
good one.
What difference to the sound will the 3000pf capacitor make as opposed to the 5000pf ?
the holes on lugs isn't to pass wires: it`s for melt solder, and then you can bring the wire close to it when warmed.
This is great, I want to do it with a strat im putting pickups from a jazzmaster in. But HOW do I get one of these 5000pf capacitors? I can’t find them on eBay at all. Is it in a different measurement than pf? Any help would be great
The 5000ph is for the switch correct? All the ones I find online are a different shape and ceramic. Does it matter the construction?
Hi you can actually use anywhere between 0.005uF and 0.02uF depending on what you prefer. Construction doesn’t matter.

Nice one, cheers!
What's the name brand of the pots
Eu consigo fazer essa ligação com chave Alpha ???
Bom seria mostrar o timbre na Guitarra o resultado dessa instalação
Hi when you wire the tele 5 way switch is it just the same for a left hand guitar.
Many thanks
Chris
Should be, pups are still neck and bridge.

I think its to do with the ground wires and the capacitor not liking the humbucker splitting... Any help is appreciated
I have 10000pf on hand and wouldn't want to order and wait. Would it be good enough?

At what temperature do you set your soldering iron, please??
380 degrees Celsius in this video.
I did this, Love the front four positions, Back position sounds good but has about a 30% cut in volume. Not sure why....
Did the mod using exactly as you suggested and happy with it apart from the HOOP sound being slightly nasal like a half cocked wash. Spoils it for me.
What if your bridge pick up has 2 leads
Where can I find a 5000pf capacitor at? I cant seem to find it anywhere
Hey you can use anything between 0.005uF and 0.02uF. eBay has plenty
how do I do this mod with an import 5 way switch?
Does it work. Because there a lot of wrong ways wireing
There’s a sound before / after you solder, like a scraping. What are you doing there?
spreading solder around, it's the soldering iron scraping on the pot surface. Thanks for watching
@@SixStringSupplies no, it's like a short sharp burst of sound.
Something between spraying compressed air and sharpening a knife.
Ah ok yeah that’s cleaning the soldering tip with brass shavings
This is the Bill Lawrence 5 tone mod.
it doesn't matter which CTS are use? I mean tvt or not
Hi no you can use any pots you like. We just stock the TVT pots which is why it’s used in the video. Thanks
i did it wrong, going to try again, seems like a ground wire got loose lol
1:15 2 A's? 2 B's? I'm a greenhorn mate. I thought A for volume, B for tone on a Pot. Oh wait... does A stand for audio?
it would have been nice with a sound review right after the soldering
"Like so."
i have a better version, much more tonal difference.. just put a jumper wire from lug 1 to 8 (not a capacitor) and put a 0.0047 (472) or 0.0022 (222) cap between lug 7 and 8 (bridge hot n neck ground lead). so the post.4 is Out of Phase (duck quack) and post.5 same as post.4 but with the bridge in series with the cap (for solo boost). so much tonal difference.
Sounds interesting. Do you have a sound example on this version? Highly appreciated.
This is what I prefer as well
@@pinacoco2 another modification, same like before but re-locate the cap. put the cap between lug 1 and 4. so it gives u out of phase with cocked wah on post 4 and neck with cocked wah on post.5
on my post before, the cap gives an effect on post.2. it makes bridge + neck cocked wah
Why would anyone wire up a tele like this? It makes no sense....
YEA YOU MAKE IT EAZY SO IT DONT WORK. JUST A BUNCH OF NOISE BUZZING AHHHHHHHHHHHH EEEEEEEE AEE BUZING NO SOUND ...JOKE
