@@theshadowlands14 The Harmonic Percolator has a pretty unique sound, but he doesn't use it much (on At Action Park, the only two songs I know for sure he uses it on are Crow and The Idea of North - it's very clear when it's on). The real secret is his amp: a custom build blending an old Fender Bassman guitar head and an Intersound IVP microphone preamp, all going into a full-range speaker (as opposed to guitar cabinets, which tend to shave off particularly high and low frequencies). That combined with the bright attack of a metal pick (serrated according to some sources) results in the scratchy, harsh-yet-barely-distorted clank that is the signature Shellac tone.

Steve is like Joy Division, Martin Hannett, and Tony Wilson somehow combined. Todd is arguably the ultimate human drum machine, an all time legend alongside Ginger Baker, Reni, and the likes. Jason Hallman well his guitar is made out of aluminum and weighs around 20 pounds. I think you would have to have a hip strap at that point. You'd kill your shoulder.
"Come on people now, smile on your brother. Everybody get together try to love one another right now." A man said that. A great man. Open your heart to love, why don't you brother?
The tone of his guitar certainly doesn't sound like shit. Its one of the most unique tones I've ever heard. Dirty and gritty and chunky as all hell. Its great. usually when someone says "they sound just like on the album" it's a testament to a band's live sound. In this case, I say it as a testament to Albini's recording. I swear it feels like someone dubbed the actual album recording over their performance.
They are called Shellac. They have about 4 or five albums. This song is off of their first full album At Action Park. Everything Albini does rocks, end of story.
Just rediscovered Mr. Albini and his work. It’s weird, heard Big Black as a senior in high school.. forgot for a few years - glad to remember. His attitude toward corporate America is fitting for a punk. What’s more punk than giving two middle fingers to the establishment?
It's just a casing he built or had built. His rig may have changed but it was a case for a Fender Bassman head and some solid state Traynor head, both going out to different cabs. Or so I read.
Sorry, it's a bassman head on one side, with a solid state preamp into a solid state power amp on the other side. The big knob just controls the volume for one of those rigs.
Its a Bassman and a Tapco IVP preamp. The Bassman goes into the 10"/12" cab on top and the IVP goes into the 15" cab on the bottom and also straight into the PA. The IVP is most of his sound.

I saw Shellac at the Congress Theater in Chicago in 2001(?). It was a budget show ($6), thanks to Fugazi sharing the bill. More exciting for me was being in a bathroom stall next to a completely soused David Yow, and trying not to convulse with laughter at his unceasing drunken mumbling while taking a piss.
I must strongly agree. I have just recently become exposed to his music (big black) and his guitar tone is definitely extremely unique and memorable as well as very enjoyable to listen to.
