Which to buy? 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance v Hyundai Ioniq 5N

  • Which one do I buy?
The new 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance (“Highland” refresh)
    Or
    Hyundai Ioniq 5N
Both are serious performance cars but with everyday usability and the very low running costs you get with an EV.
Note that one of my main concerns is that the Tesla is far more expensive in the UK than it is in other countries. It makes the price gap between the two much closer than it is in other countries.
Given that, which would you go for?
In my opinion the Tesla probably has better efficiency and real world range (they’re good like that!), better software and I get free supercharging. Pair that with super low overnight electricity tariff and for 10,000 miles of driving it will probably only cost about £100 in “fuel”.
The Hyundai looks to be more fun, more character, more aggressive looking, better practicality, proven on track, more practical (hatchback).
Even though the Hyundai is more expensive, if I were to add enhanced autopilot to the m3p it would make them much the same (the Ioniq includes assisted driving).
First world decisions for sure, a very fortunate position to be in! Or maybe I do t buy either…
I REALLY WANT TO READ YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS!
    Thanks for watching.

I personally buy the M3P, but its just because I like the simplicity of it, no engine fake noise, nice daily driver and a beast on the track. BUT for you guys, you should go for the 5N, it would create more content, also you could compare it to tesla after 1000 miles or smth, compare battery charge also, and would you still excited about the fake engine noise after a few months.

I think these comparisons are tricky because these cars are different sizes - sedan vs small SUV. The Ioniq 6N is supposed to come out in September 2025 and it is a sedan. I have little doubt that it will mop the floor with the Tesla with respect to performance and trackability. And the Model 3 performance may be great but I’ve seen many reviews for both cars and the reviewers uniformly gush about what Hyundai has achieved in creating such an engaging EV. That doesn’t happen in the Tesla videos nearly to same extent.

Drove the 5N at Hyundai head office in Germany this week. Very impressive and to see others that have never driven electric genuinely falling for the car. I had a Model 3 Performance for 4 years and loved it but swapped for a Taycan GTS earlier this year. Charging isn’t as easy but it has more character. I would be tempted by the 5 N if I hadn’t just plumped for the Porsche. I think you may regret going Tesla again but I am sure it will be just as easy to live with as all model 3s are. I think the 5 N could be a real game changer with the virtual gear shift and configurations. Wish my Porsche had it as it really adds to the experience. It is the only thing missing from the Taycan Sport Turismo.

I received my M3P Highland ten days ago and have been driving it satisfactorily. It's perfect for daily commutes, road trips, and enjoying the speed with quick acceleration. While it's not perfect yet, being able to commute solely with FSD is something you can't understand until you've experienced it.
However, from a performance and driving fun perspective, the best electric car at the moment is the Ioniq 5 N. As a Tesla owner, I have to admit this.
If I could have convinced my wife, I might have purchased the Ioniq 5 N. In a few years, when the Ioniq 5 N matures or the Ioniq 6 gets a redesign with an N version, I'll buy it as a track car.

100% Richard the Hyundai. They have created something totally unique and special here and easily stands out from anything recently thats been released . The M3P is nice but sorry albeit quick I definitely because of the uniqueness I would go for the N. By the way it does have matrix. I have an EV6 GT and that does and I am looking to change to the Ioniq5N in red. Track wise Hyundai’s N division are one of the best in the business and just look at what Hyundai have done around the Nurburg and pikes peak. It will leave the m3p for dead on a track. To have a car that does what it does and how it foes it with the almost unlimitless options you can have in settings is new and refreshing. I understand the sounds are fake, but from what many say it is as realistic as you get in an EV. And let’s be honest even a BMW M3 pumps artificial sound through the speakers. And who doesn’t want to hear you bouncing off a “rev limiter” in an EV. Regarding charging I totally understand, but in Europe certainly most Tesla superchargers are now open to all vehicles. So appreciate the free Tesla supercharger miles and efficiency most definitely. But as you have had loads of Teslas, I would have thought something different would have been nice and certainly for the channel. Also you and all of us know Elon will do a crazy price cut soon as he always does and especially as Tesla shares have taken a hit recently. But good luck with the new M3P and it does look better than the old one and look forward to the content on it. 👍👍

For me, like you, driving Tesla's since 2017 ---i would go for the Tesla...I unlike petrol heads don't need the noise. For those who like track cars its the N... If I was spending my own money and I suspect I wouldn't shell out £60K plus anyway. But if I did I would try and get an idea of depreciation of both. My feeling is the M3P would loose more- it will be more common, it doesn't look radically different to the old M3P whilst the 5N would be less common which might help retained value and it does look more striking. The articfical sounds in the 5N might fun for a week or two bit like the farts etc in the Tesla. A good sound system is important to me.
The 5N might charge quicker witht the right ultra charger. but it might be close if one looks at miles per minute added as the M3P will be more efficient. I don't like the old school servicing requirements of the legacy makers which is a way of extracting more money for not doing much. So in summary a close call . I say this as a pretty happy M3LR owner.

Having driven one at Everything Electric I'd go for the Ioniq 5 N as its a hatch, looks more interesting and is by far the most engaging fun EV I've ever driven. Yes the Tesla will be more efficient but due to cheap electric it won't make a big difference and charging a non Tesla is getting easier by the day (I have an Ioniq 28 and can now do all my charging on Tesla Superchargers and that is with just 100 miles of range).

Putting "Performance" to one side we have an Ioniq 5 and a Tesla MSLR. Simply the Ioniq 5 is a great family car, loads of room and very comfortable. The two things I don't like is the lane keeping - can't be permanently turned off, and the many buttons and switches. Also software is not as good as the Tesla and it has a maintenance schedule. Low speed driving returns about the same as the Tesla but higher speed the miles/ KW drops away.
The Tesla has a simplicity that after a year I really appreciate, software is great and updates with ease. The big one is the Tesla charging network.
    If I wanted a larger family car I would by a.....Model Y.

I had 2 flat out laps and really felt like an ICE car with all the sounds a gear shift emulation. It’s a quite a chunky beast and even with the suspension on the hardest setting, it felt quite soft even with the Hyundai sports bucket seats (Which I love and are in my N) Having said that, I will take delivery of a Tesla M3P in a few weeks. In Australia the N is $122,000 and the M3P is $87,000 - so quite a difference. I really love the tech and silence of the Tesla and the sound system is superb. The Tesla is smaller than the N (I hate SUV’s) and The Tesla is 400Kg lighter. The sports seats in the M3P are very soft compared to the Hyundai, and there are are no belt pass throughs in the Tesla seats. I think the N’s are more track focussed and the Tesla more daily driver focussed with track capability. I will certainly miss my Fastback, but I wont miss paying for fuel or the lousy sound system and headlights.

But for me, the every day practicality and long trips (I go to southern Italy) the Tesla has it licked. Even without free charging, Tesla's superchargers are comfortably cheaper than the rest. As for the fake noises etc, I think Porsche have done it well (although I'm very happy with no fake sounds), I know in the Ioniq I'd be switching all that off. Having said that, its clearly a great drivers car. Maybe when the whole of the supercharger network is open to all, it will be a closer contest for me. Although I'm still struggling to part with the comfort and practicality of my Model S. If Tesla were to do an Audi Avant sports hatch type version of the M3P, that would be game over for the rest.

Has nobody watched the Chris Harris, Matt Farah & other reviews
These two cars are not even in the same league.
I can’t believe that people would choose the M3P over an N.
We run a M3P for one of our sales guys, another runs an Ionic 5. Notwithstanding the N variant, I’d go Ionic 5.
I’d like to like Tesla, but just I just dont.
Tesla is really starting to lag behind with the lack of 800v architecture too.
What the Tesla does have on its side is efficiency. Though, for most efficiency of an EV is a tiny proportion of ownership.

I’m sure the 5 N will have much more appeal to the younger driver than the model 3 does if only in styling and kerb appeal but surely the insurance premiums are going to be crippling with so much power and speed available.

We in the UK just get screwed by Tesla. While other EU countries have seen reasonable price cuts, we get 15k miles (valid for a limited period I believe). W T F ?

The way they treated those who ordered the Model S Plaid was disgusting.

Great video Richard. Could you please confirm validity period of the 15k miles when you get it? Thank you
