Expansion Big 12 Teams CAN'T AFFORD to Pay Athletes Revenue Share, NCAA Pushes SEC, Big 10 Way Ahead

  • The Big 12 Conference, home to a collection of athletic programs that compete in the highest tiers of collegiate sports, often finds itself in the shadow of its wealthier counterparts, particularly those in the Big Ten and SEC. Unlike these conferences, which benefit from extensive television contracts and massive alumni donations, many Big 12 schools face financial constraints that impact their competitive edge. The revenue disparities are stark: while the SEC and Big Ten enjoy lucrative deals with networks like ESPN and FOX, the Big 12's media rights agreements are significantly less lucrative. This financial gap translates to fewer resources for facilities, coaching staff, and recruitment efforts. Additionally, Big 12 institutions often have smaller alumni bases and endowments compared to the flagship universities in richer conferences, limiting their fundraising capabilities. The lack of major urban centers in the Big 12's geographic footprint also hampers revenue potential, as there are fewer local businesses and media markets to support athletic programs. Consequently, these schools struggle to attract the same level of talent and to maintain the cutting-edge infrastructure seen at wealthier programs. This financial imbalance has competitive ramifications, with Big 12 teams often unable to consistently vie for national titles in football and basketball. Furthermore, the pressure to remain competitive can lead to financial overextension, with schools investing heavily in athletics at the expense of other academic and institutional priorities. In summary, while Big 12 programs are not devoid of resources, they operate within a more constrained financial environment compared to their peers in the wealthier SEC and Big Ten, leading to challenges in maintaining competitive parity on the national stage.

It’s no big secret why Utah chose the B12 over the ACC. The B12’s new media contract offers more money to Utah than the ACC’s crappy media contract that runs through 2036. That coupled with the fact that Utah could join the B12 without having to agree to the 99 year clause (worth as much as $80M in exit fees that Utah won’t have to pay when Utah jumps to the future Super League) are the reasons Utah chose the B12 over the ACC. Had nothing to do with which schools are better or which conference was more competitive…always comes down to the $$$.

The age of conferences is probably over. The next round of TV contracts will probably be the last for the conference format.
What I'd love to see is a relegation system where the league sets the pay rate for the players AND coaches based on the tier the school is in that season so the schools don't have to worry about paying the players and coaches becuase it's done by the leauge's TV deals. Then, the schools get their share of the remaining TV revenue based on their tier level, in season performance and TV viewership numbers.
There are enough schools already FBS or planning to soon be FBS to form five tiers. I'd have a top tier of 16 teams, then four lower tiers of 32 teams each. After each season, the schools move up or down a tier based on a combination of in-season performance and post-spring transfer window computer analytics of how good they "should be." For the computer analytics, I'd have all 144 schools submit an open sourced analytics model so they all have an equal say in how the tier ranking should go.

No1 cares about Baylor at all.......Locked On Big 12 has became Locked on Baylor 🗑️no1 is choosing the Big 12 over the ACC, Utah dont wanna be in the Big 12 stop trying to hype this conference up like that when in reality this conference is a juco compared to the SEC.......

Drake graduated from Baylor and used to be locked on Baylor host so yes he is going to be a Baylor junky. What surprises me is how much he is up on BYU. What’s funny is that he really attacks Iowa State like they are rivals or arch enemies to ISU. Drake is just a kid and still stuck in college, he will never grow up. 👍😎

Arkansas can afford to do whatever is necessary to pay what is required to compete. They had no problem giving Cal the assurance there is the money to convince him to become their head coach. Lots of chicken money available and Jerry Jones other billionaires are also on board.

Well Cameron just pointed it out. They will not be able to keep up with the big schools which the exact reason the P2 are only targeting big public schools and will eventually break away and will play by our own rules.

I assume there's still no cap on private donations, so the tradional powers most likely remain.

Small school the Big Ten & SEC will be left behind. Football needs its own thing, but traditional sports, go back to 10 team conferences.

Yeah. I would rather see major conference college football break away from the NCAA into its own organization and top division. From there, I’d want to see the remaining NCAA programs at these schools reorganize into more tradition and geographic based conferences. This could have happened with some leadership a quarter of a century ago. 😞

Whoa,.... buddy, you suggested private schools might raise tuition to pay some knuckledragger to play football? I know you backed off, but if you think kids that are going further in debt so a SCHOOL can have a football team that's an invitation to violence
