    This video was actually very entertaining as well as informative. Ignore the grumpuses! I often repurpose my damaged / repaired mugs as pencil cups, make-up or paint brush cups, etc. Another attractive reuse is as a small potted or artificial plant holder. My kitchen window sill is an excellent example. Thanks for the video, advice, and chuckles.

      Hi Louis, thanks for your kind remarks. Very many tourists stop at gift shops all over the world and purchase fridge magnets, T-shirts, and other items such as mugs - as souvenirs of their memorable vacations. So mugs become valuable, sentimental souvenirs.
      But you are correct to conclude that busted mugs cannot be perfectly restored for use as dispensers of hot coffee. If you had had 40 years experience of dealing with narcissistic customers with busted china you would join me in leaping from a tall building.
      ME: “We can repair the chip but the piece will become a display item - you cannot use it for coffee, soup, scrambled eggs, pierogi, spaghetti, or anything.”
      Customer: “Oh, this is so disappointing - I really need 12 place settings - what about if I just used it for Thanksgiving?”
      ME: “You can use it for Thanksgiving, Kwanza, Passover, Christmas, Easter or whenever (the hell) you wish, but the repair (filling and paint) will eventually wash off because we cannot fire the restored paint.”
      Customer: “Well could I use it for a dessert or salad without liquid?”
      ME: “You can fill this china with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, apricots, sweet potatoes, peaches, plums, melons, eggplant, lemons, lettuce, green beans, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, spinach, corn, Swiss chard, celery, beets, onions, cauliflower, cherries, bananas, mushrooms, parsnips, turnips - or whatever you like BUT the repair will eventually fail.”
      Customer (in a valedictory insult): “Well can you put me in touch with someone who CAN fix my china?!!!!!
      ME: "I have a Ph.D. and 40 years experience NO ONE CAN FIX YOUR MUG"

      I came to this video to find ideas about how to fix three broken cups that are shattered into multiple pieces. The video doesn't tell how to fix that so I was sad about maybe having to toss them. Then I saw your comment. If gluing them back together the regular way doesn't work then I love the idea of keeping them as desk organizers, planters, or paint brush water cups. If I turned them into planters I'd have to remove the handles so they will look more like pots, and so they will fit on my narrow window sill. Thanks for the ideas!

    What kind of epoxy is typically recommended for this kind of repair?

    • @boredwools2158
      @boredwools2158 Год назад +1

      PC Products adhesive; PC-Clear "clear liquid epoxy" ambient cured, thick consistency.
      PS. If you use a thin epoxy, the porous ceramic will interfere. Get the thicker stuff.

    What’s a good type of dye for a black mug? This is for the chip method. My favorite mug got a pretty bad chip and it breaks my heart to see it like that.

    • @artistryinglass943

      Hi Grecia, thanks for watching my video. If it's worth $15.00 to you, try this black epoxy from Bigbong - amzn.to/47cOIOs . Be sure to clean the broken surface before applying the glue. After it sets up, sand and polish. Or, you can use any 2-part epoxy you have available and tint it black with lead scraped off from a lead pencil (not so good). Please subscribe to my channel - best wishes John

    After a standard porcelain mug handle is fixed, can it be used in a microwave oven to reheat coffee? what type of epoxy or glue do you recommend? Will super glue or epoxy withstand the microwave or dishwasher?

    • @johnwakefield5633
      @johnwakefield5633 7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Barry, thanks for watching my video. Some less-than-honest repairers may claim that repaired mugs can be used - either in the microwave or otherwise BUT no glue will withstand repeated or even occasional use for your favorite cup of coffee or tea. We tell all our customers that a mug with a fixed handle becomes a DISPLAY piece only.

    If the brass wire is covered by clay, is it still microwave safe?

    • @artistryinglass943
      @artistryinglass943 4 месяца назад

      Hi Gary, that's a great question! The real answer is that you should never place a repaired coffee mug in the microwave (metal handle/armature or not). This is because the glue and any epoxy filler or paint is NOT FIRED ON. So the repaired mug becomes a display piece - not to be used under any circumstances (unless you want to fix it again).
      PS Thanks for viewing the vid!

    Hi! just watched the video. I have a mug I brought all the way from London to California then discovered it has a long hairline fracture. If I use DAP as suggested, does that mean I cannot drink from the mug? It's a Starbucks mug, I think it's china

      Hi Theresa, I don't suppose you are the former Conservative Prime Minister (just retired from the House of Commons)? If so - congratulations on having the sense to emigrate to California!.
      On the mug - it's OK to use occasionally if you insist BUT much better to keep it as a displayed souvenir. With heat and washing the crack will widen and extend. Thanks for watching my video!

      I know, right? My mom always used super glue to fix broken crockery when we were growing up. As an adult it occurs to me that this may not survive a dishwasher (we hand washed as kids) and also might be toxic. I came to find a way fix a mug broken into multiple pieces with a food-safe method. I also watched to the end and facepalmed hard enough to wake the cat!

    • @johnwakefield5633
      @johnwakefield5633 3 года назад +1

      Hi Taz, many people feel the best way is to let the glue dry and then use a razor blade to cut/trim/scrape the glue off.
      Otherwise, use acetone/ nail polish remover.
