Dude I completely agree. That footage is my favorite live footage of all time, and the only flaw is the lack of geezer ripping on that bass. Dude is a genius are wrote a lot of sabbath’s lyrics. Underrated for sure.

I've heard other drummers comment on the similarity between Bill Ward and John Bonham, but I don't hear it. At his best Bonham was the absolute master of push/pull and shifting pace. He could do mesmeric like no one else (e.g. When the Levee Breaks, Kashmir etc). Bill Ward at his best was much more on the front foot, as in this video, blues/jazz attack. For me, Ward was the better (just), because of how critical the drumming was to that Sabbath sound when they were the greatest band on Earth.
Bill Ward was very much schooled in jazz. Both Bonham and Ward were from the Birmingham circuit. So they knew each other. But I wouldn't say that any one of them influenced the other in a significant way. The music they played needed another approach than earlier rock music, as they had to adjust to the louder output from the developed equipment. In this performance Bill is brutal. Bashing away with the thick ends of his drumsticks on his kit. But he can be subtle as well as using power. He always has those tasty fills that elevates the songs. He has that swing feeling that is more recognizable in Sabbaths studio recordings.

Ward and Bonham are the 2 greatest. Incorporating Jazz into Metal was Brilliant, that power, heavy hitting fast hand of Bill ward was insane! no one and no body will match that, he maintain that stamina all through out the set. Hands down to the true legend.
Bill and Bonham were both playing on the Birmingham circuit at the same time before making it big with their bands. As with all of their generation they both worshipped Gene Krupa. Bill never got the respect he deserved and its great to see a new generation recognising him now
I played with Bill ward in 1984 he used very big drum Stix over sized !!! Went to perks palace hb so cal to watch Walter trout band. Walter called Bill up to play but Bill didn't really want to play . But he sat down pushing the drums around and then picked up the sticks and raised them over his head and with one hit put both sticks through both snare skins and left the sticks hanging in the springs !!! Got up and sat down to drink our picture of beer !!! The band was in shock with no snare drum ! Now that is bad ass !!! Good times love that guy . Thanks Mr ward your friend 🙂
I wouldn't say that he was inspired by Bonham, I would say that they were both from the same school. As for this Paris live recording, it has to be one of, if not the greatest live performance ever.....And I do to some degree include Queen at Live Aid into that category......
I put it in the same box of legendary live performances you have to watch: The Beatles at the Wasington Colosseum, Ringo is fire on that set!! The Doors live on Danish TV... the atmosphere between songs is kind of cringe but it's so well recorded and filmed, it's worth it just for the sound Pink Floyd live at Pompeii... No argument here! The Who at Monterey pop... I just love the vibe of that set!! Jimi Hendrix Woodstock because it's so quintessential but I'm torn between that and Montery because of the impact of his comeback on American soil! Deep Purple Made in Japan because, well, yeah! Led Zeppelin at the Royal Albert Hall is my favourite! It sounds awesome and the camera work really makes you feel like you're ON stage with the guys Cream... The same can't be said about their performance at the Royal Albert Hall... Sadly I feel like history missed out on these guys and all we have left is a shoddy video made buy drugged out camera crew who discovered the zoom function on the lense and other bits for TV that were badly mimed... I'm really bummed about this. There are other great concerts out there, but these are the few that came off the top of my head!
Hey jason I did some research on this kit Bill was playing its a Slingerland kit with a Ludwig snare and if you notice Bill is playing with the drum sticks upside down he is using the heavy end of the sticks.
It's said that Bill Wards drums were admitted to the hospital he beat them so badly. And in case you missed it, that is that last song of the set, after all that work before this.
Pretty sure Ludwig, Ward and Bonham were friends for years before famous, at least from 15, 16 years old. Jazz and Big Band influence is spot on. Bill later used Slingerlands in a much larger kit.
Bonham and Ward absolutely knew of one another, and both are heavily influenced by jazz and RnB, and i'd argue they probably did influence each other, at least a bit. Both their bands are hugely responsible for helping to create the sound of hard rock in the 70's, Sabbath even being progenitors of multiple subgenres of metal, so I'd say there was probably at least some amount of influence on one another in style and attack. They're both insanely great drummers in their own right. There's famously a missing Zeppelin/Sabbath jam that was recorded when they realized they were recording their latest albums in the same studio, sometime in the mid 70s maybe, not sure. Love the sound of his kit on this recording!

I wasn't into them as a teenager. My younger brother was. I've seen this video many times. My take away Every time is, T he Drummer!! His stamina! He in my opinion steels this show!! I've never been so enthralled by a drummer. He's an animal. Obviously talented as well. ❤️✌️
Bonham was NOT an influence on Bill Ward. They both had jazz and blues drum influences. That can be said of virtually every drummer coming out of the 60s and 70s, especially in England. Ward has a fairly jazz oriented drum set up at this point they had really only been going as a rock act for just over a year when this concert took place.

There are a lot of live performances of Ozzy switching words around in lots of songs, or having verses in different places in the song. Considering how he used to come up with melodies for the songs, it's not surprising he'd have a few switch-ups. Of course, these days he's got lyrics on a monitor at his feet.

In fact all of Sabbath and Led Zep (except Jimmy Page) knew each other due to all being from in or around Birmingham. Supposedly sitting in an old pile of tapes somewhere is a recording of a studio jam session that happened with the two bands but it will probably never see the light of day sadly
The story is that the set was the same set his friend Bonham and the guy from Vanilla fudge uses. And it was reported to be the loudest kit a the time. I think he is playing the big ends of his sticks to compete with tony and geezer. + The Jazz influence and a massive load of metal sauce. Quoted as saying "- I try to play orchestrally." lol
they were not all off their heads on drugs, this is 1970, no autotune, backing track or trickery and if you were off your face it wouldn't sound so perfect, so-called musicians of the last 20 years are charlatans using electronic enhancement to sound average and to rip your generation off! if you couldn't play it live you didn't get the time off day, this country churned out musical mastery like this by the boatload you could literally go to a local workingman's club on any weekend and see talent like this learning their trade in the toughest environment imaginable where if you bombed the committeeman would come up halfway through your set and pay you half the fee and tell you to do one and get off!
audio wise, there was way better separation with space between the instruments before things started being so compressed. One reason why old vinyl sounds better in many cases.
Great drum solo this guy was on fire from what I heard him and John Bonham were friends John asked him if he could try his kit but from what I heard bill did not let him so I don't know if they were still friends after that first time I seen this video great
Pays to be a jazz drummer first and foremost, as Ward was and Butler. One of the best powerhouse rythum sections around and as good as Bonham/JLP! Didn’t need drugs! He was/is that good! Ian Paice another. One of the best left handed drummers and jazz
For my money Bill has it over Bonham. They were friends and rivals as Bonham was close with Tony Iommi and so they would see each other on occasion. Not sure if Bonham was louder although he is credited with being very loud but Bill was loud enough and undeniably the creator of Heavy Metal drumming, utilising his Jazz and Swing influences.
Bill Ward is my biggest influence as a drummer. If you want look up Jon Rice. He has had several reactions down to his videos. He is best known for his extreme Metal Drumming.

Bill Ward was a massive Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich and Elvin Jones fan, hence the minimal jazz drum setup.
they were not all off their heads on drugs, this is 1970, no autotune, backing track or trickery and if you were off your face it wouldn't sound so perfect, so-called musicians of the last 20 years are charlatans using electronic enhancement to sound average and to rip your generation off! if you couldn't play it live you didn't get the time off day, this country churned out musical mastery like this by the boatload you could literally go to a local workingman's club on any weekend and see talent like this learning their trade in the toughest environment imaginable where if you bombed the committeeman would come up halfway through your set and pay you half the fee and tell you to do one and get off!

audio wise, there was way better separation with space between the instruments before things started being so compressed. One reason why old vinyl sounds better in many cases.
Great drum solo this guy was on fire from what I heard him and John Bonham were friends John asked him if he could try his kit but from what I heard bill did not let him so I don't know if they were still friends after that first time I seen this video great

Pays to be a jazz drummer first and foremost, as Ward was and Butler. One of the best powerhouse rythum sections around and as good as Bonham/JLP! Didn’t need drugs! He was/is that good! Ian Paice another. One of the best left handed drummers and jazz

For my money Bill has it over Bonham. They were friends and rivals as Bonham was close with Tony Iommi and so they would see each other on occasion. Not sure if Bonham was louder although he is credited with being very loud but Bill was loud enough and undeniably the creator of Heavy Metal drumming, utilising his Jazz and Swing influences.
Bill Ward is my biggest influence as a drummer. If you want look up Jon Rice. He has had several reactions down to his videos. He is best known for his extreme Metal Drumming.

no band at that time was as raw as sabbath
