I test drove and looked at the Linclon MKX, Lexus RX, but not the Volvo XC60. I did look at the Volvo XC90. In the end, I put an order for a 2016 Lexus RX 450h with Luxury Package! Really excited!
They are GREAT vehicles. Ford and Lincoln have come A LONG LONG way in terms of reliable nice looking vehicles. I own a 2015 Lincoln MKC 2.0 AWD and it's by far the best vehicle i've ever owned. I think my next will be a 2019 Ford Explorer Platinum with the ecoboost V6. That should be extra fun...!!!
pov: it’s 5 years later and the lincoln is way more reliable and has aged 10x better with it’s better features and luxury options, yet the resale is virtually the same so it’s way easier to sell
Ricardo 里卡多 Actually according to the various surveys the Volvo is likely to have the worst reliability, although none of them are likely to have any significant issues.
After watching this video I had a thought about why the Lexus stopped quicker…So I asked a buddy of mine who sells for Lexus, does the F-Sport version of the RX 350 come with upgraded brakes…sure enough, along with an upgraded suspension, it does! If this were a realistic test with the common seller (non F-Sport RX 350), the volvo would have killed it, like it did with the 0-60.
The Lincoln is definitely the fastest 0-60 according to Car&Driver AND MotorTrend, I don't know if the did an actual torque braked launch or stop and go..
Damn that Lexus looks pretty good in red! Just the right shade too, not too bright, not too dark! And of course, the vehicle is much more interesting to look at than the other two.
I'll take the Lincoln anyday....test drove one and it was a beast with that 2.7 ecoboost. Also saw it in the Black Label with the Thoroughbred interior palatte. Yessir! Welcome back Lincoln!
I went with the Lincoln! So much power and comfort, Really no touchscreen Lexus?DOA As far as drag race, whoever was driving the Lincoln did not know how to drive! I've got 6.3 on my 2.7 Turbo zero to 60, blows that Volvo off the road L.
You have to understand there test was done at elevation. So ALL 3 SUV's are going to be slower when your above sea level. On flat ground as i'm sure your test was completely different story. And YES i totally agree with you about Lincolns. Since i own a 2015 MKC AWD 2.0 and find it to be the best vehicle i've ever owned. Plenty of power and space for my needs.
True..... 7.64 0-60? I'm guessing something was broken. I own one as well and no way. Plus there's not a single magazine or test where it's run more than a 7 second 0-60. Motortrend has it at 6.4. Car and Driver got a 6.0. You only have to look at the power numbers. Makes 33 more HP and 85 more lb*ft of trq than that Volvo.
Lexus looks badass ! Best looking one of the bunch. You dont see the RX in that red paint finish alot. Looks great. Lexus in the bunch has the best luxury, best interior and the most reliable and most stand out looking of the bunch. Best resale vaule too. I really like the Lexus triple beam LED headlights
This was a fun way to organize a video, definitely one that needs to be sat down and watched, rather than skimmed through, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Nathan's right. The XC60 is very sporty to drive, and since the 2015.5 mid-year upgrade, it has torque vectoring. It will flat take a hard turn, for an SUV. And with European-style suspension, it has great high speed driving dynamics too. And if you've never had a serious back injury, like me, you probably can't appreciate the orthopedically designed seats. I can drive for hours in my XC60, and my back never hurts, even when I get out of the car. Not even true for the chairs in my den. However, three great cars. A tie was well deserved by all three.
I own the lincoln and still pick it it has a classy look which means luxury best interior when it comes to luxury you are not caring about mpg and it has enough speed to be sporty
I choose the Lincoln because room plays a big part when it comes to having kids in the car and if the breaks were that big of a deal I would switch them out. I think the Lincoln has the better interior. But i do love the other two also.
no probably about it, that v6 in the lexus is an 3asy 300,000-500000 mile engine and the most reliable v6 currently on the market. turbo and supercharged engines kill longevity due to the high temps and pressure they force the engine to operate in. no contest...the lexus by 10 country miles.
Something wrong with your Lincoln. Car and Driver got a 6 flat 0-60 time on an AWD version. I own one. 7.64 seconds is ridiculous. That means it’s about as fast as my V6 2003 Honda accord I used to own. No way.
That Lincoln is very nice, way better than the previous gen. That Volvo needed a refresh for 2 years now, pretty pointless to get that when the new gen should be coming out next year.
Lexus would be ahead if it were at sea level. High elevation is not kind to normally aspirated engines. Lost about 20% of its rated power. The other two turbo vehicles hardly loss any in comparison, just slower spool up than if it were sea level, translating to minimal losses in acceleration. Just the way forced induction works.
Lexus all the way, 1st, 2nd and 3rd...Luxury buyers in this segment are not going to care about 0-60 etc. and where from stop light to stop light? let's be real, these CUVs are driven on a daily basis and no one can match the reliability and comfort of the Lexus.
These guys even said the interior was nicer and quieter in the Lincoln.. I think if comfort is your primary, Lincoln is better. If standing out is, get the Lexus.
You guys need to repeat that breaking test 3-5 times ate least for each auto and driver to tell which is better, because even slight error with your speed and reaction matters! Do not confuse people with naive "tests".
Out of the three, I would choose the RX350. It's no surprise as to why it's the segment leader. Lincoln is not my style whatsoever. And Volvo's powertrain, to me is the only standout feature.
So here's the deal: for $60K, you can have a well equipped Volvo XC90 that will blow all of these away in every category! How about 7 seater with super modern and expansive interior (tons of cargo room) yet drives tight like these smaller suv's. Oh, and engine is the same as this XC60 but with a tad more power, and still excellent fuel economy. Volvo has excellent discounts at this time; I've recently seen 2017 XC90 R-Designs (sport package) priced at
What is also surprising is that the 90 is built with so much light weight steel that it's barely more than 100 lbs heavier than the 60, which is a much older design. So acceleration shouldn't feel radically different.
two major fundamental factors that must be counted in term of reviewing such a luxury crossovers are LOOK and COMFORT. which i think the lexus wins it (my personal preference). but i would really appreciate it if they have assessed it or at least commented about it. thank you guys anyway, great review!
I like the Volvo the most because it has a super and turbo charger. Still one thing that is becoming clearer with this generation of cars is that US companies have nicer interiors outside of luxury brands like Bentley.
My Volvo XC60 in Crystal White is absolutely beautiful! With its T6 supercharged & turbocharged engine it is a freaking BEAST!! It also handles like a sedan versus an SUV which is great with all that power. If you're in the market for one of these vehicles & you're looking for power, then definately test drive the XC60 with the T6. Put it in sport mode & prepare to be blown away!!!
Buy a Lexus, you will have very few breakdowns. Buy anything else, spend more time driving rental vehicles from the dealership while your SUV is getting the much needed repairs!
Gents......great video comparison, I drove em all, plus the Jag F-Pace. Everyone of them does pretty much everything super good, and some points a bit better than the others, the Mark Levinson stereo in the Lexus is superb, Lincoln interior amazing, and Volvo just a darn good deal (although I'm baffled on the 0 to 60 thing, as my seat test says Lincoln faster than the Volvo and so does most other sites).......however, don't take this the wrong way, but neither of you guys are slender lads. There is no way you can sit in the F-Sport bolstered seats without the ridiculously hard ridges digging into your hamstrings. Those seats are a problem, and you ain't doing 300 miles in them without feeling like a worn out rag. Plus the "regular" Lexus is the same rig as the F-sport engine wise anyway......so the run of the mill RX 350 is just as good, with way better seats. The Jag F-Pace though......what a great drive, they need to catch up a bit in the interior game, but killer good vehicle too. Ironically, we bought the MKX, the 22 way massaging seats and the pull of that turbo did it. And the black velvet exterior with 21's and the interior is terracotta leather. Lets see if Ford can keep it as good as I hope........
+headcas620 0-60 in 5.6 seconds is boring?? Seriously, what are you smoking? Look it up. All the tests shows that crossover kicks ass and it does. My performance vehicle is my GT350. My vehicle fleet is complete.
don't care for any of these new age station wagons . the front end of the lexus is hideous and the Lincoln isn't far behind . nice review guys , keep up the good work
I'm not too sure if the braking test was very accurate. They should have done it multiple times. Next time bring Infiniti QX70. It will own all the three in terms of performance and braking.
Great review, I was very surprised at how slow the Lincoln was with all that power. I like the Volvo best too. The Lexus looks like it should have much much faster and the looks are borderline 90s Pontiac. I think the Volvo could use the headlights and infotainment from the new XC90. But I'm sure that will happen when the model is updated in the next year or so.
in this video it was a full second slower than it normally is, whether that’s driver error like wrong drive mode, didn’t disable stabilitrac AND traction control or what. but a full second off is absurd
Dear TFL, Doing an in-depth comparative test of several competing vehicles is a great idea. However, the points system may require some refining. The 1-2-3 method isn't sufficiently nuanced to reflect varying degrees of separation. Perhaps points out of 10 would provide more emphasis. An In-depth Real Car Guy
I still see 1996 Lexus’s on the road. You buy Lexus's for reliability. I'm still happy with my 2004 Lexus RX with 244k in miles. The only things I changed were brakes and routers!
+getnbigger29 Thanks for the question. With our method you can more easily see how much further it takes each car to come to a complete stop. Numbers are certainly useful but real world results show instead of tell.
+The Fast Lane Car And the real world shows - Lexus - deep breath and wipe the sweat off your brow. Volvo - a visit to the body shop. Lincoln - a visit to the nearest hospital.
+MrKeyboardCommando Not really... It depends on the exact distance between you and the barrier which is very unlikely to be exactly at the level differentiating all three.
+The Fast Lane Car I understand that "showing" the performance is more "telling" but your test doesn't factor in driver error. At 60mph you're moving 88ft/second which means a half second slower reaction time to the cone is 44ft,1/4 is 22ft, 1/8th is 11 etc. I don't doubt the outcomes but it's not a very "good" test if you're going to rate it "safest" per those outcomes. Anyway keep up the good work. And keep up the morning videos!
I think the Lincoln hit the most important points for me. The Volvo has FAR too many buttons that would drive me crazy. The Lexus is just too ugly to even think about.
Thank you for the video... keep up the good work... would Test #6 be a track test for the fastest time? Luxury crossovers should also take the twisties with moderate level of composure..
i think Lincoln failed again just like their navigator trying to complete with Escalade. I'm a fan of Volvo but I'll have to give this one to Lexus. Xc60 is too conservative looking interior and exterior but I would pick Volvo for safety.
We had 5 Toyota cars during last 11 years, and I think they are too optimistic about Mpg - it's always +1 or more l per 100km more that they say, always! Rav4 (2010, 4-cylinder) was 13-14 l/100km, Highlander AWD V6 2016 - 13.5/100km in average (9.5-10 on long highway trips).
Anti-Lincoln bias is evident in their numbers. Their 0-60 time was over a second too high, and the braking was off as well. I could tell the guy liked the Volvo. I don't think this was non-biased at all.
The Lexus will last longer than both of them. The Lincoln stop-start system is defective and the dual super-turbo charging of the Volvo runs into problems later down the road.
The panels are so thin on the Toyota that without paint you could see through them. Must be a lot lighter then the others, a Prius takes the whole track to stop cause if the battery weight...just so your aware
could see in video that he brakes a second later with the Volo than the others.... its hard to breake the exact same at the excact speed everytime though so understable......
Another thing in the brake test the cars were on different parts of the test strip and may not have the same grip. Plus, when it was the Lincoln's turn, probably a little scary to slam on the brakes with the others car so close. Motorweek test shows 121 feet for the Lincoln which is very good.
I'm 100% sure the breaking calculation methodology is wrong, considering all cars here did 0-60MPH in different times. There are so many human errors that could happen in this measurement.
Lincoln made a true luxury crossover that rides better and quieter with massaging seats and I vote for it.
Jaffar Abdul Baqi bet you never had a ride on real luxury car
I test drove and looked at the Linclon MKX, Lexus RX, but not the Volvo XC60. I did look at the Volvo XC90. In the end, I put an order for a 2016 Lexus RX 450h with Luxury Package! Really excited!
I love my Lincoln MKX reserve, I have the 3.7 and it’s enough for me. No issues with it yet, drives super smooth and has a very quiet interior.

I am looking at getting a used one.
Since I won't be drag racing a crossover, and based on reliability and resale, I'd take the Lexus without question. And I like the new edgier design.

lincoln interior + volvo engine + lexus exterior = great midsize car...too bad you can't get everything you want
I would go for the Lincoln. It is the quietest and the interior is a very nice place to be.

Volvo for the win! Lexus, second. Lincoln? Forget it! Haha!
Will you test the hybrid too?
The panels are so thin on the Toyota that without paint you could see through them. Must be a lot lighter then the others, a Prius takes the whole track to stop cause if the battery weight...just so your aware
Exellent tests!¡¡!!!!
how is the stopping challenge accurate when they all hit 60mph at different times. you have to measure it
Why not an Acura?
could see in video that he brakes a second later with the Volo than the others.... its hard to breake the exact same at the excact speed everytime though so understable......
Another thing in the brake test the cars were on different parts of the test strip and may not have the same grip. Plus, when it was the Lincoln's turn, probably a little scary to slam on the brakes with the others car so close. Motorweek test shows 121 feet for the Lincoln which is very good.
ford puts that turbo charged eco boosts and the just lift off but the gas milage is better on the edge and explorers
I'd have any of them.
can you do comparison with the new civic, and also the mid size car
The Lexus RX all day everyday.
Lexus the best
That Lexus is for 60 year old ladies. I know. I got rear ended by one. She had her cat in the car with her. No lie.
Wait… why the hell my 2012 Xc60 T6 has an L6 Turbocharger + Supercharger instead of an L4 T+S that the 2015 T6 has?
Too bad the Volvo had the 2.0 t6 instead of the 3.0 t6. Would like to see what the r-design would've done as well.
I'm 100% sure the breaking calculation methodology is wrong, considering all cars here did 0-60MPH in different times. There are so many human errors that could happen in this measurement.
