- In Carnatic music, Dhattu Varisai (or Dhattu Varisais) refers to a set of exercises used for practicing irregular or skipped note patterns. "Dhattu" means "jumps" or "skips," and these exercises involve skipping certain notes instead of playing them in sequential order. They are designed to help musicians develop flexibility, precision, and mastery over the notes in a given raga, typically, Sankarabharanam,Mayamalavagowl etc...which are commonly used for initial training.
Dhattu Varisai exercises can be played in various rhythmic structures (tala), speeds, and in different octaves, making them valuable for developing control over melody and rhythm. These exercises are an essential part of the Abhyasa Gana, or fundamental training in Carnatic music, helping students build a solid foundation in both voice and instrumental control.
