There was that intro scene at the beginning where you saw a few corridors through security cameras and watched a woman huddling in a corner - and then some huge, hulking thing ran towards her before the view cut away. So when I finally managed to open that door leading from the intro area to the med/sci section, I hesitated and really didn't want to go, because I recognized those corridors. There was some big, hulking thing out there and all I had was a wrench. But then I walked through the door, the music started and I got attacked by the first mutant, almost giving me a heart attack. Ah, memories...
A reminder that although this does happen, that area in the intro is actually really safe throughout the whole game. Great storage/hub area, especially in multiplayer
This may sound weird, but I feel this song...actually fits the horror theme & atmosphere, especially in the opening. Think of it, you just woke up from a cold sleep, you're in space, and EVERYTHING'S GONE TO HELL. You scramble to escape the decompressing room, and enter the main ship to find that it's been overrun with mutants, malfunction, and psychic monkeys thirsty for blood. And seemingly all of the alarms & sirens are going off at once. A quiet, suspenseful track wouldn't quite fit. This isn't a slow creep into a spooky derelict ship, this is a frenzy of trying to survive, and keep the ship from blowing up, while a million problems bite you at the same time. This isn't fear, this is *PANIC.*
There isn't an inherent horror theme to SS2. It isn't a horror game. It just has spooky elements. It's an first person action rpg dungeon crawler. That's why the song was chosen. Bioshock isn't a horror game either. Just because there are spooky elements in a game doesn't make it a horror game or even horror themed. By that argument, Dead Space would be an action game with a few horror elements. It's not. It's a horror game with action elements. The same could be argued of Half life 1 and 2. It would be a "horror game" due to the presence of horror elements despite being first person shooters exclusively. I don't blame people for being confused. They got spooked by the low poly mutants, and they were given erroneous first impressions. But this song is meant to be a blood pumping action theme for smacking mutants and psychic monkeys with your wrench, but the intro gave people the wrong impression. Hell, Bioshock leaned even harder into the "boo, scary" boogery, and it's the same kind of game as System Shock 2.
@@BigPuddin You make a good point that the game is mechanically a dungeon crawler. And horror is certainly a loose & subjective genre, sure. However, I would argue that horror as a concept was still a key factor in the game itself. It's a key component of the game's tone and atmosphere. At the start, it might have started out as a cyberpunk romp with a sense of urgency--much like System Shock 1. However, I feel that the horror elements are too blended into the core game's theme & atmosphere, for them to not be integral parts. It walks a fine line--similar to, say, Diablo 1. I know a lot of people go into it with the expectation of Silent Hill, and get thrown off by the techno. But I don't think the techno nor the dread should be dismissed.
@@BigPuddin I agree, if you only knew the only extent of your abilities, it would be a walk in the park. But you don't know, it is revealed to you, slowly in the progress of the game, and only in the pinnacle of the final fight, you will know that the extent of your abilities is infinite. Until then, it is a game of horror

System Shock 2 is one of those rare games that plays scarcity actually EFFECTIVELY. Hell, I was a resource-grubbing bastard the entire way through and I STILL nearly ran out of antipersonnel ammo in the Body of the Many.

This song is epic. I remember the first time I played SS2. I just entered MedSci and the moment the first hybrid attacked this song went full throttle. I panicked and then I ran into a camera and alarm went off. :D
I think the genius of this track is 1, it was a courageous move because you knew it'd be highly criticized, and 2, unlike the more ambient soundtrack you'd expect, it really right out of the gate set the rushing, adrenaline-pumping, hurry-up mood.
This game is one of the most intelligent video games of all time. It's all about the competing heuristics of biomass and technology, individualism and collectivism (and their relationship to adaptation in complex systems), the relationship between humans and AI, and the godlike power of future technology. Fucking brilliant.
And just like many other older games, it feels like it's often overlooked due to its dated graphics, when those have little to no bearing on the story...and that is precisely why I will always stick to older games. Newer titles, with very few exceptions, just feel hollow and add tons of bloat to your hard drive (and nothing to your life or understanding of the world at large).
@@BigPuddin idk sometimes I feel equally as powerful when I sprint by with this music lol it's like I'm fast as fuck and they aren't even worth my time and can't stop me from getting what I need in the area.

Blimey. Even after nearing 20 years, this music brings me right back to the deafening foghorn of panic you feel when you realise how this game is going to be.
This being the first piece of in-game music, it had a real effect on me... After hearing I had to get the main elevator shaft back online... This music created a sense of urgency... Then I kinda cacked my pants upon hearing "Silence the discord!!!"
It's a real achievement to make a techno/dnb style of track into something that fits the horror theme. Although some people don't like the style, I think it fits perfectly. To me it combines that sci-fi "hospital" feeling with that lonely isolation. Then the beat fits perfectly with your frantic hiding and fighting against the unhinged Hybrids.
back when i used to be 7 years old and i used to get creeps from the grunts and jump from the chair like a bitch screaming still gives me the chills even to this day.
Dr. Janice Polito: Marie, I'm sorry I've been out of touch, but i've been working on that artifact Bayliss bought back from Tau Ceti 5. I've done a level three analysis on it. [a distorted voice can be heard] Dr. Janice Polito: Marie, I think it's speaking Engish.
Had I not read about the game long before I finally played it, I would've never figured it out myself there. I remember there was another log where Polito finally realizes that SHODAN was manipulating her but it was already too late.
This music is such a great fit for an action horror game. We all know and love the typical ambient horror but sometimes you need to move and this shit is what kicks you into gear.
You know, because this is so upbeat it makes the place scarier than you think, you parked your ass in the corner whilst playing inventory tetris and yet your fumbling around when you probably killed everything on the level anyway.
As a HUGE fan I don't think that is such a great idea. I highly doubt that in mainstream gaming of today, they can make something worth of "System Shock" name. But let's wait and see.
Oh come on, anything can get popular no matter how old enough with proper marketing and luck. Bethesda just took Prey's name and slapped it on a different game and it became a smash hit. System Shock 3 can make waves.
I know a lot of people don't like the music of System Shock 2, but I love it, and I think it's one of the best parts of the game. True the default volume for the music is way too high, particularly for sneaking around and listening for enemies, but it complements the atmosphere brilliantly well. Particularly the scary tracks.
I still remember the time after I destroyed the last escape pod ship and I ran down the hallway, then about six Hybrids just came around the corner and charged me, I was able to successfully fight them off but I was laughing so hard the entire time because I just found it hilarious. Good times. :)
This was done on purpose. In fear of scaring games with capitals (often used in screams or shouting) the title was published with lower case letters as the rest of the game is already creepy-atmospheric enough!
I've never played this game... but i sure do remember watching my older brother play the game, it was far to scary and complex for me to play back then. I'm going to purchase this from GOG and give it a shot.
Played it, loved it and I wish there was an worthy sequel. I like the Bioshock games, but they're too damn easy compared to this... what the hell happened?
I feel like they should have saved this song for the more combat-heavy sections, I think it does the game a bit of disservice to have one of the best tracks play in the very first few minutes of play

I'm almost exclusively a fantasy guy when it comes to videogames, old rpgs in particular (Daggerfall,Baldur's gate,Temple of elemental evil..) ..but System shock,Unreal & Deus Ex are an holy trinity that even someone like me has to play at least once every couple of years
Damn straight. I've noticed this with dismay as well..compared to some old classics like Syndicate, Command & Conquer 1, Master of Orion 2 or Baldur's Gate, modern games just don't have that flavour anymore. They're all shiny and great, but it seems to me that they lack the main thing: soul.
at the same time, this song is something you'd probably hear at a rave party. There'll be the people too scared to dance because they know WHY the song is playing (if they've played the game) and everyone else will just give them weird looks and just dance...

@Channel07 If you think ammo is scarce in Fallout 4 or 76, then you have never played System Shock 2 lol
straight up sprinting through the body of the many ngl, i was basically out of ammo for that ending segment of the game. Especially bad on a non psi build (first playthrough)
I mean they're different genres, System shock is a survival horror rpg, fallout is a sandbox rpg, so they're gonna be different
theres ammo in this game?
good thing every shotgun on the von braun is prone to jamming
They really pulled a number on you by having the first few sections monster-free. When I first played, I was like "Oh, I guess it's deserte- OH SHIT"
This song is epic. I remember the first time I played SS2. I just entered MedSci and the moment the first hybrid attacked this song went full throttle. I panicked and then I ran into a camera and alarm went off. :D
And then you had 6 more hybrids on your back in no time :D

Finding your first speed and sprinting past the enemy mobs with this playing while your adrenaline is surging like mad is just fucking phenomenal.
Sprint past? What are you? A peace loving hippie? You spring TOWARDS them with a wrench and introduce their grey matter to the Med Sci deck.
@@BigPuddin There is a difference between bravery and foolishness.
@@BigPuddin idk sometimes I feel equally as powerful when I sprint by with this music lol it's like I'm fast as fuck and they aren't even worth my time and can't stop me from getting what I need in the area.
@@raviponso3887 Naw he's playing it right. Can confirm, that's how I beat med-sci.
When i first heard this, I felt "Rip and Tear," I play too much Doom
hahaha i can kinda hear that too
It does have that kinda badass tone to it.
Think about hearing this in Half-Life during Surface Tension.
*MIND BLOWN*
Holy shelter, i listened this while playing Surface Tension level. FRICKING GOOD.
Good to read that.
Because i can't hear you.
***** I tried it.....Wasn't disappointed xD
which level/scene?
never mind. tried at the very opening of the chapter. by the time this music wore off, the games music had already kicked in, and transitioned quite well, too.
Well done. I'm uploading some cyber modules.
Blimey. Even after nearing 20 years, this music brings me right back to the deafening foghorn of panic you feel when you realise how this game is going to be.
We are we are We are WE ARE The Many
Is there another?
I think it's some kind of artificial intelligence. I've managed to pull an audio tag file of its memory. I'll let you be the judge.
[a distorted voice can be heard]
Dr.
System Shock 3 is confirmed wooooo!!!!!
this the shir you hear at a Vampire underground club
Absolute masterpiece of a game. Making it thru the game felt like an accomplishment
I guarantee you that if they remastered System Shock 2 today, they'd definitely get enough money to warrant a sequel.
They'd have to improve A LOT in the remake
they are currently remaking system shock 1 and creating SysShock 3 :D
Wll there is an enhanced edition of SS2 coming out, and there will be VR support, can't wait for it to come out
The opening to this track makes me tingle in all my favourite places.
You know, because this is so upbeat it makes the place scarier than you think, you parked your ass in the corner whilst playing inventory tetris and yet your fumbling around when you probably killed everything on the level anyway.
fuck it
gotta replay for the billionth time
There's a song that plays at work that starts almost identical to this song, and whenever I hear it, I'm like "Oh god, where's my wrench?"
amazing how well the people at looking glass made this work for a horror game
welcome to the horror rave sonny jim
Brings back memories
When I entered Med Sci deck for the first time I shit myself
When you work on a space shuttle and need to go to the bathroom real bad, but can't find it.
Abstracting of this that this game FRIKKIN GORGEOUS, it also made me totally into drum & bass music, and I'm totally thankfull for this.
Holy shit that music is fantastic. I was gonna finish SS1 first but this got me hyped
Please do finish the first game! It's bloody awesome!! :)
SS1 has awesome music as well. Check out level R. ;)
Don't thank me because you will die a lot there...
I have a hard time with System Shock 1 the controlls are just very bad.
I don't agree with your usage of the word 'bad' here... outdated, perhaps, best explains the controls! :)
Da666ManIsBak
Bad is not the right word, outdated and weird yes. I got so much trouble with these controlls.
The song that made me buy the game.
awesome,immortal tune. True art
System shock 3 is confirmed!
HAAAAAAALY SHIET!
As a HUGE fan I don't think that is such a great idea. I highly doubt that in mainstream gaming of today, they can make something worth of "System Shock" name. But let's wait and see.
L0vac well Nightdive studios is remaking System Shock 1 so there must be some interest.
Oh come on, anything can get popular no matter how old enough with proper marketing and luck. Bethesda just took Prey's name and slapped it on a different game and it became a smash hit. System Shock 3 can make waves.
Ya I know, but first they're gonna remake the first one and possibly the second one, then they will make a third.
Mandalore: "This is revenge techno."
I know a lot of people don't like the music of System Shock 2, but I love it, and I think it's one of the best parts of the game.
True the default volume for the music is way too high, particularly for sneaking around and listening for enemies, but it complements the atmosphere brilliantly well. Particularly the scary tracks.
SHODAN!Polito talking smack while you run around to rave music is one of the most surreal moments a gamer will ever experience.
someone should do a kickstarter to buy the rights to system shock 3. it would be huge this gen.
bioshock is not system shock. bioshock was boring, system shock was cool and scary.
As what I heard SS2 license is being held in limbo somewhere in archives of insurance company.
its possible we will never see a system shock 3. but I hope we do.
I would the best that i can to make a system shock 3 with the help of people
id quite like to see the developers of dead space (the first one) on system shock 3.
I have a feeling that this song is a remix of the "Level 1: Medical" track from the original System shock, but who knows
The moment you hear this music... you know shit has hit the fan.
I've never played this game... but i sure do remember watching my older brother play the game, it was far to scary and complex for me to play back then. I'm going to purchase this from GOG and give it a shot.
Although I'm 9 months late, tell me when you've finished it and what you thought of it.
Played it, loved it and I wish there was an worthy sequel. I like the Bioshock games, but they're too damn easy compared to this... what the hell happened?
robotcow28 Personally, I believe that when they chose consoles as the main platform, they simplified it for the consoles.
Made me drop the game instantly, those hybrids are pure nightmare fuel
I feel like they should have saved this song for the more combat-heavy sections, I think it does the game a bit of disservice to have one of the best tracks play in the very first few minutes of play
Man, this song would go great for a cinematic, highly exaggerated fight scene in a cyberpunk movie.
I miss this game. It was a brilliant cyberpunk narrative.
Feeling safe, only to get ambushed later.
The soundtrack is somehow perfect for the atmosphere of the game.
Perfect theme for fighting cancer
What!
@muhammadabuzarkhan7450 The Many are basically cancer cells
@muhammadabuzarkhan7450 The Many are basically cancer cells

Hey Patrick, I just thought of something funnier than 24.
Let me hear it.

Weapon condition: 1: Terrible (broken)

A damaged screen flickers in the darkness. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
Congrats. It took me a long time to get it working but I have absolutely no regret for the time spent in this... And if I ever need it working again, there's this easy patch on some forums... But I digress, the game is amazing.
My favorite music from the game and my favorite deck.
Look at you, hacker. A pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?
With the re-release of System Shock 2, I just had to come here and listen to this again.
I miss 90s games soundtracks.
Is it just me or is this better than pretty much all Techno/Electronic/House music?
Absolute Banger
its amazing ;3;
Музыка - от которой идут мурашки по коже.
This is just absolut perfection
Everyone: System Shock Is a Horror game and its really Scary
The Game:
It's really more of a sci-fi action adventure with some horror elements.
@Brupcat From the start i was really confused what to do thing like zombies just freaked me out for some reason.
Imagine if there was ever a System Shock DLC for Dead by Daylight with SHODAN as the killer. This would be perfect as her chase theme.
Indeed. Might have a look at Beyond Good & Evil as well...oh crap, I haven't even played Planescape: Torment yet!
My friend : this track is shit...
Me: "NAHHHHH"
Just completed this part, wow. That was some epic shit; and it's only the beginning!
The time has come, and so have I.
WE SEEEEEE YOUUUUU!
Twelve internets for you, Good Sir.
synths created on a roland sh-101
Really? That thing was amazing.
This song goes hard.
I'm almost exclusively a fantasy guy when it comes to videogames, old rpgs in particular (Daggerfall,Baldur's gate,Temple of elemental evil..)
..but System shock,Unreal & Deus Ex are an holy trinity that even someone like me has to play at least once every couple of years
*Potential threat detected*
Damn straight. I've noticed this with dismay as well..compared to some old classics like Syndicate, Command & Conquer 1, Master of Orion 2 or Baldur's Gate, modern games just don't have that flavour anymore. They're all shiny and great, but it seems to me that they lack the main thing: soul.
at the same time, this song is something you'd probably hear at a rave party. There'll be the people too scared to dance because they know WHY the song is playing (if they've played the game) and everyone else will just give them weird looks and just dance...
Timelessly of it's time.
...This allmost sounds like Ultra Violet from the first Devil May Cry.
0:26 !
looks like they have been inspired by Future Sound OF London - Vertical Pig, at least the sample at the beginning. I don't mind :p
