The footage dates from the year 2000. The reason they're using the older-style symmetrical macon blades is because the club tends to give them to the beginners, at least for the first few weeks.
For everyone blaming the cox's course it was pretty obvious he's rudder malfunctioned the way he was leaning back trying to pull at this steering cables, moist only flaw was commanding hold water too late
As a new novice Cox. That is still the coxswains fault. He could have said for one side to power up other side power down or have some seats stop and hold or literally anything
I am a novice, and I have coxed for multiple races. At head of the lagoon (course has 2 90-degree turns and is centered around 3 huge curves), there are multiple turns that can not be achieved using just the rudder. The cox should have had 2 seat and 4 seat drop out or had everybody check it down and 8 seat hold.
If you listen closely to the coxswain at 0:46 he says he lost the rudder. He didnt have control of the boat anymore, I dont see why he didnt just have them hold water at that point :/
If anything the freshman 8's tend to be more set in the beginning of fall season than their novice 8 counterparts since some young returning rowers or freshman varsity may be placed in them. While novices are, well, novices. (Idk every crew does things a little differently I suppose)
This is completely unrelated to the video but in my rowing club, the club owns the boats, and we each get assigned our own single scull which we use to train and race, I happened to the get one which only has one shoe, one half of the slide is sticking off sideways and all the paint is peeling off.
This cox should have known he wasn't making that turn. The freshman cox on my team did a better job handling a boat than that on his time out...this is pretty sad, I'm sure frankie looked amazing compared to this travesty.
Commentator complaining about their brand new boat,if you put a raw novice crew out, with what looks like a novice cox as well, what do you think might happen? who put them out in a new boat?? Could be an issue with the tiller as well!
wow nice and calm, when a bunch of sea cadets drove their boat into our oldest boat our head coach ripped our balls off, we were stuck in C races and the b boat took our place and it wasnt even our fault we had right of way!
at first i thought they broke an oar i hear the same sound when a fallen tree had a branch sticking up and i moved over to miss the new quad and snap! two oars plus bow man got pulled in better than head on with a quad
I'm pretty sure without a Rutter and/or skeg it's a bitch to stear.....still he should have had ports weigh nuff' and had starboards put on heavy drive.
hahaha... i wish more regattas had things like that happen... it might make them more fun!!! i had a two day regatta end yesterday!!! boring!!! i wish at least one person flipped or something!!!
Idk if it's just me but it seems like almost every humiliating boat crash or crab video found on RUclips happens in this exact canal.

I'm sorry but the coach just cracked me up 'if he crashes again.....whatevs let's look at this crew, they're gonna win now lol'

Why were the novices in a new boat anyway? As a novice myself I wouldn't even dare go near it.
Jeez, the freshman 8 I was in had better balance than those boats.

She'd probably been coxing for about 3 weeks by that point - so I guess that the less repetetive calls gradually develop as you gain experience.
Yes you did. In hindsight Andy (cox) should have told his crew to stop & turn, but panicked a bit when the rudder went. That's novices for you.
some1 said "ive lost the rudder"
But they were just novices - having done about 2-3 weeks worth of rowing

The second boat has a lot more promise. Better recovery and catch.
The coxswain looks back at the rudder as though he was having trouble with it. He should told the rowers to reduce their speed.
This is the reason why you train a coxswain.
How is this the coxswains fault though? Not trying to blame others, just curious.
The cox must have been a relative of the Titanic's captain!
A new Composite Carbon Sykes is $38,000 and a Wintec is $31,000 delivered with wing riggers and coxbox.
This cox should have known he wasn't making that turn. The freshman cox on my team did a better job handling a boat than that on his time out...this is pretty sad, I'm sure frankie looked amazing compared to this travesty.
that second cox was ace, a bit like my coxswain!
whats the deal with these thing? Are they that fragile?
how old are they? thats crash was pretty bad tbh, im a rowerrr(:
I think every rower has seen this ancient video.
i raced this course :D it's a right pain to run when it's your first attempt and ur racing
was the crunching sound the vegetation on the bank or the boat? or both...lol
if he had ports hold instead of everyone stop the first time he would have been all clear
River Cam, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England

hillarious the reaction of the coach, how he says> oh, those fu--ing co-ksuckers...
what the hell is wrong with your crews??? they are going at like rate 20 :P is this a race?
Wrecking a row boat.....priceless
The essence of the word Action.
Get out of the boat and start walking. I like how a guy on a bike has to help them.
@DoctorGromit Its a novice boat its not going to be set up their first race.
Why does the 2nd boats coxswain keep saying "Come on"???? Or at least tats wat it sounds like
Looks like he had a rudder problem, notice after the crash he leans back to fix something
i like this coach lol
That woman Cox (no offence) has the most annoying voice ever
Kojo Agu welcome to every Cox ever

I would think that all those guys could pool their money together so they could afford a motor for their boat. They must be awefully poor!
at first i thought they broke an oar i hear the same sound when a fallen tree had a branch sticking up and i moved over to miss the new quad and snap! two oars plus bow man got pulled in better than head on with a quad
we took 2 hours in a race that should've took up 15 mins a couple weeks ago
wow such a bad crash...
tow words going through the owners mind oh damn
looks like their first time rowing, lol.
all the firsts these days in melbourne at least have hudson boats
I highly doubt that...
could they go any slower
bloody hell if that was my coach he would of made get out of the boat and swim it bak to the shed
A bit crunchy. Starboard fail.
that should not have happened, at the very least the cox could have told them to check, but no he kept them rowing right into the bank
cmon you gotta give them something.... at least they know how to feather
Nice dry humour.
Funny, but I was expecting something a tad more dramatic... ;)
Why didn't he drag or wayenough on the port side only. Then they could have made it.
I'm a novice cox and this is still inexcusable. That crunch made me gag a little.
I'm pretty sure without a Rutter and/or skeg it's a bitch to stear.....still he should have had ports weigh nuff' and had starboards put on heavy drive.
psh, novices.
0:46 lost the rudder
becuz of that crash, u guys shud use spoons forever as a punishment
They really coxed that up!
hahaha... i wish more regattas had things like that happen... it might make them more fun!!! i had a two day regatta end yesterday!!! boring!!! i wish at least one person flipped or something!!!
0:50 to 1:50 is just pure fucking lulz.
that if you coxed once in your life, he makes you look like a master.
Wow. Intense!!!
hahaha why would you give novices are new boat a brand new 1 lol
im goinf rowing but im younger than them and i dont fail!!!
lol :D
if i had that girl as my coxwain i'd go insane
