Ok, I'm 4 years late but glad to see some one that agrees. HLOTS is a classic. I can't count how many times I've watched this show. At one time reruns came on and I remember coming home from work and watching. I watched it so much with my kids that when they were young they could repeat the dialogue and tell you their favorite scenes. It's unbelievable how under rated this show is. Just finished the finale session of Succession; it is a great series and is recognized as such but I'm thinking about Homicide and realizing with the writing, acting, story pacing and cinematography, this show is better and deserves to be recognized.

Thanks Donna. Certainly in the UK homicide was fans’ little secret as it was on at different times and different nights of the week as if they didn’t want you to watch. The grey areas, the writing, frank pembleton , Luther Mahoney, the fact that no swearing, no excessive sex or violence so the show relied on story and characters. I adore the wire but you could easily say that homicide is better. It’s such a shame it doesn’t get the credit it deserves and it could do with a bluray upgrade too. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

This review is so awesome. I’m from Baltimore, and this show just elevated my love for writing and for the city I grew up in. I didn’t miss an episode. I actually watched most of them twice. Mad respect to David Simon, and to all of the actors. This show taught me how dialogue works. It’s a work of beauty amidst tragedy

Thanks Earthboundmother. The wire gets the attention, quite rightly but homicide is where it started. It's a masterful example of writing in the grey areas of police work, the law and life in general. Glad you enjoyed the video. The series needs more love. Thanks again for commenting.

@@leocoh89 I remember watching Homicide with my dad when I was young. We didn't see eye to eye much but we could always bond over 90's cop shows. Getting the DVD box set of Homicide really brought it all back. How actors like Andre Bruagher and Kyle Secor aren't serious movie stars is beyond me. Top notch performances by both.

@@pwimewib1565 indeed. It's funny how some actors are so amazing in a role on tv and just never seem to translate to the big screen. Of course when you build a character over a long run of a tv show typecasting can occur and studios can underestimate an actor's talent to do other things. Thanks for your comments.

@@leocoh89 sorry to keep blasting you with comments but I really have no other outlet to talk about this stuff (my wife couldn't care less about Homicide) but if you haven't already, please give the first 7 seasons of NYPD Blue a shot. If you're into David Milch as a writer (creator and writer of deadwood, co-writer of Hill Street Blues) it's truly some of the greatest dialogue in cop show history. Starting in season 4 the writing begins to get more and more shakespearian (sorta) and the Milch Deadwood style. He was having his own personal mental and substance abuse struggles and the writing reflects that to a degree that's brilliant and unlike anything TV had to offer at the time.

You only watched the entire series Homicide 4 time?. Amatuer. I am a massive David Simon fan. I think Homicide and its sister show Oz, was the base for cable in the noughties and beyond (as well as Twin Peaks). I also was taking Homicide as it jumped time zones and days episode to episode, like they hated the show. I remember Charlie brookner on his Guardian column raving about it weekly so there is a good chance it affected Black Mirror also). It laid down the tracks for the future, of longer storytelling, of unreliable, complicated and tragic lead characters. While the pembleton arc had that surprise, the finale moments between kellerman and luther mahony was one of the most jaw-dropping scenes in television. It was a "wait, you can do that in television". I pretty much view kellerman/lewis as the base for the macnulty/bunk partnership. Its dynamics were so similar. Great video. You made a Homicide fan with all those DVD's very happy.

nazarinprod Thanks, I forgot to mention Oz which was way ahead of its time and very dark, not sure how they got away with it. I’ve made myself want to watch homicide again now. I don’t think I did it justice. You’re right, the Mahoney ending was shocking. See , I need to watch it again! The first episode with kellerman, the warehouse fire and we follow the corpse from the fire to getting cremated at the end. Munch and the big man with their lie detector fax machine and of course when Mahoney’s nephew gets a gun in the squad room. Oh my! I’ll shut up now, thanks for watching. Glad there’s at least one person who loves life on the street

Ben Vanasse thanks Ben and apologies for the audio sync problems, I’m getting new equipment soon. I’m so pleased there are more people who love this show. Life on the street was so influential and stands up so well over time. Great characters and stories. Was it shown at a regular time when you watched it ?
