I know this is years later but damn, you’d think with how much love you have for your crabs you’d put them in a more suitable container and physically handle them better. They’re animals not dolls my god
@pharoahseyes thanks for the input. I am having to restock the pool, as some of the crabs died. When I opened them, they had orange parasites inside. To summarize including your suggestions: 1) Add sand to half of the the pond, and get rid of the debris. 2) Test the salinity of the water .3PPM. 3) Add an air stone to the water. 4) Option. I will use the pool's pump to filter the water through a hydroponic grow bed. B) Add aquatic plants to the surface of the water as a filter. .
1. you need a refractometer to get the salinity correct. 2. if you want to keep marine species alive, might I suggest doing your research on an aquarium forum. 3. theres more to slatwater than just salt, theres trace elements, microbes, bacteria etc which all makes the ecosystem function. Take my advice on number 2, it will save you a lot of time and $$
smh. you need marine salt. look up instant ocean salt mix. also you will need to setup a brine shimp hachery for the larvae when the females spawn. along with some phyto plankton too.
You're right. Baby crabs are like 1-2mm long. They require special food and care. So even if he keeps these crabs alive, good luck with the babies. This dude has wasted bushels of money when he could have bought bushels of crabs.
This is a really cool experiment! I'm actually an aquaculture student looking into experimental blue crab farming as a class project. Could I ask you a few questions about your experiment to maybe use in my project?
I'm curious to know how this worked out for you. I'm in Chicago and looking into aquaculture because I too love seafood but it's pretty pricey around here. I'm only 24 so i plan on grabbing as much information as I can and then seeing if it's feasible. Winters here will limit what I could farm. If I can, I'd invest in property, equipment etc.
Also... some of the seafood markets and fishing outlets around her have display tanks for salt water shrimp and crab. I'm not sure if they are using the type set ups you mentioned by you've given me the idea to go find out. Thanks again.
I'm incorporating all the great advise you guys have been providing. For me this holy grail remains a great quest to have a back yard crab boil from backyard swimming pools. In addition to your comments, territory is also a puzzler. Crabs are vicious.
@@nappychef35 I have 5 males an 5 females an the females just molted an two of them breaded last week so I’m hoping for them to produce eggs in the next week or two. it's more expensive, but they sell aquarium salt, which is much better, maybe even necessary for breeding marine creatures. keep in mind young crustaceans start as a plankton type creature, and as they grow they need Calcium compounds to form their exoskeleton(shell). It isn't as simple as what you are showing here, I don't think..
So I watched your other videos. You are improving and I do like your persistence, knowing how much time and money you spent on this project. I hope you succeed in supplying your crab obsession lol I love crab too!

I like how you are thinking. And this idea isn't too far fetched. There are some large fresh water prawns called RedClaws and they are reportedly a lot easier to farm in the type of setup. They can grow up to a foot in length. Malaysian prawn and the Australian red claw crawfish. Thanks for commenting.
Th aquarium salinity was off and couldn’t sustain the crabs. The crabs on dissection were also found to have parasites. Conceptually the experiment could have work had I exercised better controls on the environment. Thanks for commenting
can these crabs snip your fingers off or damage them or cut your hand etc or their claws are too small? whats their biggest size? can i farm crabs in the pool in which many people swim in (4-6) people will be in that salted pool morning and evening
Some points to consider in order to be successful. (1) Mix that sea salt in well. (2) Make sure the pH and water parameters meet living conditions for the crabs. (3) Also monitor the temperature. (4) Give those crabs some places to hide. (5) Get a bubbler or something to not necessarily aerate the water, but to keep the water from being stagnant.

Unless its indoor the crabs are going to get too hot. They need rocks or something to provide shade for babies. Also, you should reserve a special tank for when it gets crowded. You need an oxygen source too. Basically anything that creates bubbles. Like an aquarium for fish.
