My mother watched him live in UK, said there was 250,000 watching him she was at back n still enjoyed it. Am 40 myself I grew up listenin to his music, he's an icon. He up there with Tupac shakur for me, I never believed the bs they said about MJ, what they did to that man is cruel.

I understand they can only compare it to what we have in todays time which is Beyonce or Taylor Swift etc BUT these newer artist reached the public through the internet age where social media changed the entirety of what GLOBAL FAME means. MJ was the 2nd most photographed person in the world after Princess Diana and he was so famous that even my great grandparent (late 80s) living in a remote village in Bangladesh knew of MJ. He reached Global status unlike no other. Before him was BEATLES and ELVIS and after him is JB and Taylor, BUT NOBODY would match the BRILLIANCE and FAME of MJ.

This man is and will always be in a league of his own. The choreography and meticulous timing of the dancers in step with the best dancer in my time, had to be an incredible memory for them all.
This clip was part of a film called Moonwalker which was part movie part doco. Michael has to save those kids from a dictator and eventually turns into a car and later a giant transformer. Smooth Criminal was the highlight. You should check out the Moonwalker videogame as well for a chuckle.
When they were rehearsing to do this in a live show one of the dancers snapped his Achilles tendon whilst performing that leaning forward move. It required special clamps that popped out of the stage for their feet & they needed incredible strength & training to pull it off. Amazing dancers & choreography. That kid was f'@cking awesome. I wish I could dance but I'm like a rusty mechanical digger with a hydraulic leak.
Watching a gen-z react to this is just gold. The "Smooth Criminal" music video is an excerpt of Michael's "Moonwalker" feature film. When this video came out, I watched the dance sequences so many times, frame by frame, that I wore out the magnetic tape on my VHS tape. MJ was ahead of his time in many aspects, including visual effects. While the full "Moonwalker" includes a ton of CGI and stop motion animation, the coin Mike tosses into the jukebox was created by a computer animation studio called Pacific Data Images, which was later acquired by Dreamworks as Dreamworks Animation and was the studio behind the Shrek franchise. The premiere of Mike's music videos were global events. I think the closest analogue is maybe an Apple event introducing an entirely new product.

But when MJ wanted to recreate it in his live shows he came up with the idea of the shoes with the hollow heels that latch onto the pegs that rise out of the stage. He patented that design too. :) Still need INCREDIBLE core and leg strength to pull off the lean and he and his dancers leaned at a far more extreme angle on stage than in this video, almost fully horizontal at times. :O
