Data East always showing up in these emulation collections gives me the same feeling as when you see an over the hill rock band playing at county fairs.
Polymega is nuts. The deluxe bundle with all the modules is like $1000. That doesn't even include the n64 module which, from what I've seen, which runs a lot of games very poorly.
The theoretical market for the polymega (someone who wants to emulate old games through a dedicated machine AND wants to use their original carts/discs to do it) is such a narrow market to me I can only imagine that anyone who has one of those is a mark with way too much disposable income. If that's true these arcade collections will probably do pretty well for them lol
@@TectonicImprov The only thing that would make it worth trying out in my opinion is if they made a module that can play Neo Geo AES, MVS, & CD games so that way it could function as an all in 1 Neo Geo for the fans.
@@TectonicImprovAs someone who falls into that small market, I bought the machine. I wanted a good hardware solution to play my Sega Saturn/CD RPG library and the original consoles are a pain to deal with. It’s nice to see my games get some use on modern physical hardware. That being said, it just rips the ISO off the disc, so the magic kinda wears off after the first time you insert the disc, lol. That being said, it’s done a good job emulating for the Saturn. It runs some games that I could never get going on other PC emulators.
Whether or not overlays like that are immersive or groundbreaking in 2024 (they're not) . . . I do love them. I always prefer to play with the overlay when I'm playing an emulated version of an arcade or a handheld game. I don't know why lol 😅 As for the Polymega collection, these first two releases don't really interest me (nice packaging though). However, since the Polymega's whole thing is archiving your physical games by inserting them in the console, I do like the idea of a way to physically release arcade games that otherwise couldn't have been inserted into the system. Hopefully they release some games that people actually want to own physically and that haven't been ported 900 times to other consoles.
I have both, Evercade and Polymega, but they are for different audiences. If you have an existing physical collection Polymega all the way, but if you are wanting to get into a physical collection without having one from the jump, Evercade is the answer.
@@toastrave7820 The newer Polymegas ship with a revised controller which feels good in hand and is responsive. It's not perfect, but gets the job done, definitely an above average controller. I have not encountered any issues using it with games in a 3D space.
Donkey Kong '94 on Super Game Boy had an arcade cabinet border. That's the earliest example I can think of, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are even earlier ones out there.
An Atari Jaguar collection would be more interesting to me, if they added Atari Jaguar to Polymega. But I think any collection should have to work on the original consoles as well.
Hey Ian, just a quick correction here. Evercade, switch, and PS4 don't have the player vs player version of Karate champ. That version is currently only available through mame or other arcade emulators.
If it was a game I really like it'd be worth it. The idea is cool, something like this collecting all (or most) versions of Lode Runner is something I've wanted for a long time. But yes this is what the Evercade is for. Why not do rereleases of rare disc games? That fits in better with the Polymega's identity since its main selling point is emulation of disc based consoles.
When you have a bad emulator, which to be fair is like 99% of any collection of older games, the overlays/boarders introduce lag. The best way around this... is to turn them off.
The outrage Pat is displaying reminds me of the pointless outrage of Diablo fans when the mobile Diablo game was unveiled. I don't understand why he's getting so worked up about this. I saw Polymega's marketing for this and I understood what it was. The inlays are stupid, I don't care for them either and I agree that it isn't anything revolutionary, that's it. Why is Pat so outraged by this? This news only warranted about 3 minutes and they should've moved to something else.

Lol great analogy. Gotta love those county fair washed bands.
Polymega: I guess we're publishing physical games now.
When they say region free, he is referring to the neo CD that comes with the collection. That CD is region free and they are not wrong.
Well, it at least makes me think how VR arcade cabinets would be a little cute.
The Vectrex had changable Overlays!
They were prints on plasticfoils and colorfolter.
Imagine getting a bidet for Christmas lol
I don’t have to imagine, I did several years ago. Best present in two deacades
If you did, you're getting one of the best presents ever. Bidets are life changing.
I would love to get a bidet for Christmas. Those things are great.
i would be stoked tbh

Pat looks like a goomba from the super mario brothers.
That description for these exclusive collections. That is almost word for word the motto of the criterion collection
That guy in the video might not be able to drive a Lambo - but at least he can fit in one. JFC Pat, get yourself together.
KFC for breakfast Pat

is the stock polymega controller any good? I'm just curious as i might buy one for use in what limited 3d games i care about

Aren’t you able to rip the game to the console? That’s pretty sweet especially if your friends have games you want to play
Yes you can
I sincerely want an entire podcast of Pat n Ian talking about a bidet

I don't understand the anger this is just like the evercade
It's too gimmicky. Not worth it.
I actually really like overlays.

The Asteroids case is in the style of the Nintendo DS games . I thought that was a DS Case when I first saw it .

Ian looks like hes aged 10 years in a two year period what happened lol
@@redred222 I mean, people get old. Age hits some people harder than others.
With all respect, if Ian lost the beard and Pat went back to shorter hair they'd look several years younger.
Getting stressed out and losing your mind over gaming news will do that to you
Jesus Pat, do you have cheeks full of popcorn?
He snacks between takes
I really thought the segue from the Bidet ad to the Polymega segment would run along the lines of 'Speaking of shitty products..."
I wish they would release the arcade rom for Duality. The game from the minimart in San Andreas. Loved that game. Played it for hours.
It’s the CCCCCUUUUUUU PODCASSSSTTTTTT!!!!!🎉🎉🎉
No, NeoCD on the Polymega will not increase load times. The NeoCD has basically 0 load time.
paying for a overlay bezel pack; this is where we are now.
I volunteer to sit in the chair when Ian’s gone and make hand gestures for him.

G-mode does Japanese mobile rereleases. Yep. Those old Java ports.
Polymega is a Pentium PC masquerading as a retro console.

So it's a worse version of an Evercade... Just like everything about the Polymega.
