You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice ruclips.net/user/postUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

Good work mate. Nice to watch videos with blokes making do with normal affordable gear. Too many videos out there with blokes got shops full of Festool, Woodpecker, Kreg and every other bit seriously expensive gear out there. You appeal to 99% of us normal weekend warriors with our mixed combo of cheap tools and hand me downs dreaming about the shops full of the good gear. Keep up the good work!

8:30 you probably know by now, but just for anyone watching this in the future. The kickback happened because its cutting something wider than it is long (a so called 'cross cut'). This configuration of the fence should only be used when something is longer than wide (or close enough to that). Its called a 'rip cut', therefore the name of this regular fence is a 'rip fence'. If you would want to do a cross cut, you would need a cross cut sled, miter gauge or miter sled to do it safely.
In a bit more detail, the kickback happens because the blade gets 'pinched' by the material. Because it is such a wide piece, wider than long, it is easy to put too much pressure on the outside, making it pinch and kicking back.
Nice video anyways. I do think your choice of MDF was good for this project. Mostly because its exceptionally flat. The dust might not be very nice, but once assembled that of course isn't an issue.

    • @Foxated
      @Foxated 4 месяца назад

Kick back can happen for a variety reasons, a wobbly/inaccurate cross cut is one but the other reason is that there is no riving knife behind the blade. Plus, do not guide the wood with the left hand past the blade, in fact, never ever go beyond the cutting point of the blade. Safety is alway no 1. If you feel something is not right, don't use the saw.

I have the exact same table saw, and have the same issues with the table and the fence. Was going to look at an upgraded table saw. Instead I am going to build this project. Most excellent! Thanks (I am very much a novice weekend worrier and loving the new adventure into wood work.) - And also really great to see a woodworking video from a fellow South African.

Greetings from 🇿🇲. I'm very new to the woodworking and It is such a pleasure to find your video. I bought the exact same table saw a couple of months back and almost immediately took to the Internet for some tips on solving the few problems I encountered with it including the poor fence and also how best I could use the router and jigsaw slots etc. It got a little frustrating coz it looks like this particular saw is not so popular in the west and this is the first time I've seen it on RUclips. So thank you for sharing your saw improvements, they will definitely come in handy as I explore woodworking further. I intend on making a jig to help me make boxes so thank you for giving me the confidence to keep going.

But hope you don't mind I would like to make a couple of suggestions. 1 always wear protective glasses just put them on when your in the shop remember your little in-country with kickback. They can be much worse. You only get two eyes. 2 get in the habit of lowering the blade back to zero and locking it in. Both for self preservation and I noticed you have a couple of young people hanging out. Stay safe 😊

This is what making is all about. Taking what you have and making it better. I did similar stuff to my table saw ( bigger 'wings', mounted to a more solid base + wheels ). Gotta say. like you I often don't wear a dust mask when cutting....but...always do when cutting MDF. Have read up that stuff is really bad for your lungs. Definitely wear a mask when using MDF ( and all timber i guess ). I like the music!

Clever use of MDF to increase the table size and give you the more accurate fence. I may follow this same plan, but I think it may be helpful to cut out a “saw clearance plate” slot. So in the future it will be easy to swap out the blade w/o taking off the saw top. I do like this setup though!

Nice. I love seeing this kind of ingenuity. You really need to make sure that MDF is waterproofed, because it will swell and warp as others have said. A laminate top will also make things slide easier.
I decided after spending about $150 on my saw to make it better that it would be cheaper in the long run to just buy a new saw since the table near the blade was not flat anymore. After looking at all the cheap $500 saws I decided I should just bite the bullet and buy a Jet proshop saw. Luckily I have very good credit, because I don't have that much cash.

Great job. One of the simplest and elegant solutions iv seen. I suggest you add a riving knife to help prevent kick back. It also provides a cleaner cut. Frank Howarth made a good video on this. His design would work on your table.

Your video convinced me, I'm going to put a custom top and fence system on my 10" craftsman table saw. Thanks, but be careful, you never want to cross cut a small piece on a table saw without using a miter gage, you're just asking for a kick back. Use a chop saw, or radial arm, if you don't have those use a miter box, and hand cut it. It's not worth losing a finger, to save a few seconds.

Hi there from South Africa. I just bought a similar table saw. in standard trim from the manufacturer, it's crap! Decided to build my own bigger and flatter table and get everything absolutely square. was contemplating superwood. What thickness did you use? Also where did you get the alu t-track? I'm in Cape Town so should have better luck finding something similar. My setup will be using 4 of those tracks. One like yours and one on the opposite side, and then 2 more to use as a cutting sleigh. Thanks for a great video.

Hey Eugene... I think I used like an 18mm MDF in this particular upgrade... I didn't use it for very long like this... did another upgrade a few month later, here is a link: ruclips.net/video/pGNBSCswBac/видео.html ... I got the track from a local 4x4 shop, it wasn't proper T-Track... I'm sure you'll be able to find the real thing pretty easy in Cape Town... good luck, and thanx for watching...

Great video! I have a Ryobi table saw, cheapie @ $130.00 .I made some improvements, like a zero tolerance blade cover. My saw blows dust everywhere. I am surprised that you let your kids run around your shop while you work, sawdust is not a healthy environment to be breathing or getting in eyes, for you or for them. Please use some safety gear. ie. goggles, masks and ear protection.
A bit of a nuisance at first, but you get used to them.
Also a Irving knife and blade guard would be good, before something bad happens. I will try to make your improvements to my little Ryobi. It definitely needs improvements.😊 👍

Interesting build. I have been pondering a thing for my saw for a while now. I have been thinking of one of those wooden top folding tables, cutting a square hole out big enough to hold my saw in either orientation and using something like threaded rods and the piece I cut out of the table top to make a "shelf" for the saw that is exactly as deep as the saw it tall. I figured I could mount it by surrounding the bottom of the shelf it sits on with strips so it just plunks in. For the fence I figured just a straight piece of wood or angle iron with wood screwed to it and some L's that hang over the ends and hug the table well. Thread in some machine screws you can tighten up into the side of the table to hold it in position. That would give me a table large enough to rip down sheet goods, and other large pieces, and if I ever want my saw to be portable, I can just lift it up and out. No mods at all to the saw proper. Plus the big table for it folds up and stores so it will not be in the way when I am not using it. The downsides that I see are I would need to set up on someplace level like my deck (not a problem) and the shelf mounting for the saw may need some bolstering to keep it from moving at all.

Thanx... this seems like a good plan, I am also rethinking my design... kept mine pretty simple, cause i was not very confident in my abilities at the time of building it :-)... my new idea is similar to yours in that i want to build around the actual top and not over it... nothing concrete yet, but I'm workin on it... thanx for sharing your ideas...

Agreed. That Ryobi tablesaw has a crappy table and fence. The blade cover is a joke and I removed mine a long time ago. Were you concerned about the cutting depth of the blade that you lost when you mounted the Supawood on top of the existing table?

Great video mate, how about a back plate on the back of the rip fence, so when you put the fence on both front and back are bang on, if you do get kick back or something goes wrong the fence will be more secure and will also stop thicker materials pushing the back of the fence off alignment as you push through
