My Mountain Bike War - Forest of Dean - THE GBU DROP!

- Alright guys. I was hoping to use this video as the 10K subscriber challenge, but as it turns out, I am going to be off the bike for a while, due to what I hope is a minor knee injury I sustained. So I thought I might as well upload this a bit sooner.
The GBU drop is a 3 dot feature on the downhill trails at the Forest of Dean, that I crashed on back in 2017. It is a drop that I have thought about for a long time. It was the location of my worst crash, and even got an honourable mention on the big time mtb channels of GMBN and Ben Deakin, which is pretty amazing.
I suffered a broken collarbone that needed surgery, and a concussion that's ill effects lasted weeks. I should never have attempted the drop at the time, as my skills were not even close to being ready.
The run in to this drop requires you to pump the trail to gain extra speed, and in 2017, I had no idea what pumping a trail even meant. In addition, the turn into the drop is very sharp, so a lot of that speed gets taken away regardless, which means you need correct technique off the drop. There is no room for error.
The only nice thing about the drop, is there is a very wide landing, which is at least something I guess, and means even though it is a blind drop, you can't really miss the landing. I still put in a couple of guide lines with my shoe, to help locate the perfect landing spot though.
For any riders out there that are not fully confident in their skills, I would definitely recommend you to give this drop very careful consideration before you attempt it, as it can easily catch you out, and the potential for severe injuries are quite high. It is not like most other drops. Take this one seriously, and of course wear a good full face helmet.
I have always wanted to go back to the GBU drop and smash it to pieces, but I was never truly sure if that would ever happen. I didn't know if my skills and confidence would ever be up to it. Confidence was a massive issue particularly. I didn't want to get hurt again.
I just knew this was the moment. I had looked at and thought about the drop so many times, but this time I felt it was now or never. I was as ready as I would ever be.
It was great to have no pressure placed upon me by Matt of IMBOMTB, he just stood by and quietly filmed, and allowed me to focus on what I needed to do.
Sending that drop honestly was one of the greatest moments of my life. I am so proud of myself for pulling it off.
It was just a great day that caught me completely unaware. Life can sometimes surprise you like that in a nice way.

Well done on that drop Dave, redemption complete 👍🏻 hope the knee heals well, glad it’s not too serious, you’ll be back out in no time. Loved the vid, great soundtrack too, great stuff 👍🏻
haha cheers Marc, yeah it was deffo one of my better vids
Confidence is KING, you believe in your ability more now and that shows in your riding, props to you for going back and smashing that jump. Speedy recovery bro.
thanks Lee, yeah it has taken a long time to develop my skills, and to be honest i still feel i very sketchy rider. I don't know if i will ever be that good. But i was at least good enough to pull off the GBU drop, which i think is by no means an easy drop
Awesome Dave!! You are a legend! I’m sorry to hear about your knee. It sucks to be off the bike but it happens to the best. All the best!! I wish you a speedy recovery.
thanks mate, yeah it does happen to the very best riders, thankfully i dont think it is mega serious, but it does need rest according to the experts
Confidence is showing and paying off. Kudos for the drop.
thanks Sam, yeah it was buzz deffo
Great video Dave, so happy for you that you did the drop that messed you up for so long. Take it easy mate, rest that knee up and we'll all be out riding again before you know it 👍
thanks Jason, i look forward to our future adventures
Your progression is absolutely banging right now, well done lad keep riding
cheers Jack
Nice one Dave, kudos for going back to that drop. Hope the knee gets better soon as looking forward to the next vid 👍
cheers Paul, yeah i hope the knee gets better soon too
Brilliant!! No small drop that and after your last attempt you did incredible 👍🏼
Hope the knee gets better soon, and the riding continues. Proper chuffed for you mate 😀
thanks Christian yeah i was buzzing off this one, I don't think i could have done it any worse than last time though hahaha
@@DaveJenvey very true lol, know the feeling in my last video I actually start learning how to jump.
Bet you felt like a king at the end 🤴
Doesn’t only show your progression Dave it shows you’ve got some serious spuds. Must’ve been real tough to mentally conquer that as well as physically...and you smashed it. Your channel was one of the reasons I recently picked up a cheap camera and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Rest up lad 👊🏼
massively Jim, the mental battle is the worst because your mind screams not to do it, as it doesn't want you to get hurt again. I think it comes down to having the discipline to block out those thoughts. It is an extremely challenging side of mtb that has always intrigued me, the mental battle
Dave Jenvey I can only imagine. Took a lot to do that man. Massive respect to you fella! Keep up the awesome work 👊🏼
GBU track was shut when you rode it though 🤔 redemption or not could it not have waited till it was legit open and the track was settled and it was then pushed back as it needed reworking as it was rode to early!? So much money and hard work went into re building the trail!! madness to see it being rode early like where is the respect for the trial builders? Everyone else managed to wait for it to re- open!
I have pre-prepared this statement for the inevitable criticism I knew this video would face:
I knew I would cop a load of heat for riding the GBU trail whilst it was closed, from many of the viewers of this vid. I have become accustomed to being repeatedly criticised for just about every video I make now, haha, and I think most youtubers are also used to this, and choose to ignore that criticism, but, I always try to reply to all comments if I can.
Here is my explanation, this isn't me having a go, but it is an explanation:
1. One orange fence was moved temporarily, and then it was placed back after I had completed the drop. No damage was done to the fence.
2. I have been on the planet long enough to know that if you want to be a winner in this life, sometimes you have to bend a few rules. Arnold Swarzengger advises this also lol, and he is a big hero of mine.
3. I knew in my heart, it was the right moment to hit that trail for me. The fact it was closed, actually made it safer for me to take a long look at the drop, and suss exactly how I was going to hit it. I didn't have to worry about other riders coming down the trail.
4. With the amount of entertainment I've given the mtb community over the years, for absolutely zero financial gain, I felt I was due this liberty. My novice boy gets broken in half vid, has over 60 thousand views, and I have a number of other successful vids I have done at the Forest of Dean.
All these vids help promote and advertise the trails at the Forest Of Dean, and attract more mountain bikers from further afield to ride there, which of course means more revenue pouring into the location, which can then help pay for trail maintenance.
5. My vids all take many, many hours of editing time to create. Are you willing to put in that amount of work to promote your sport and the Forest of Dean? I put in just as much work as any trail builder, except I use a gopro and a laptop, inside of a shovel.
6. The section of trail I wanted to hit was clearly in perfect condition and ready to go for my mtb glory.
7. And lastly, how on earth was the trail damaged by my actions, or anyone hurt, or anyone disrespected?
Thank you
Dave Jenvey
@@DaveJenvey And for most of us locals who had the patience to wait until it was open... What about the work, effort, time and dedication for locals?
As for paying for trail maintenance, DTV have to raise their own funds. They barely get anything from Forestry; 20k was raised.
If every mong head selfish idiot had the same idea as you, the trails wouldn't be open, and on the off chance people were to have the same incident on the first drop, Gloucester & Lydney A&E would have to be tending to have a go heroes like yourself.
We don't NEED your videos to promote FOD. This place existed long before you rolled a wheel! You're either dumb or delusional to think that you and the others can make a change.
I guess you just insulted a shit ton of true local Fodders and respectful mountain bikers. You just pissed off a community!
Just saying!
@@Titot182 But there is one thing you are forgetting. I don't ride to please anyone. I keep saying this to the world, but nobody listens. I ride mtb for me and me alone. The entire world mtb community could hate me and reject me forever, and of course, I would still turn up to ride their spots whenever I choose with a big smile. The community of mtb can hate me with a passion, and I would still enjoy the sport immensely. I actually find the hatred motivational believe it or not. And of course FOD needs promotion on youtube, not just from me, but loads of other youtubers and social media peeps, instagram, facebook etc. It's how it is done today. Back in the day it was via magazines. Now it is the internet.
just saying
@@DaveJenvey Lost a few brain cells in the crash too... never mind. I think you missed the point entirely of our collective response. Nevermind, there are more intellectual riders out there that would have courtesy and respect. I wouldn't want to waste my neurons on you.
All social media has done is accelerate the amount of selfish try all fuckwits wanting their five minutes of fame who get "influenced". And lo and behold, just today, a chap snapped his collarbone on GBU because they get sensationalised and motivated to do shit that's beyond their ability and skill level.
@@Titot182 haha of course i did, but still kept enough to smash your biggest FOD drop to pieces didn't i, so its all good baby
Bravo dave👍👍great to see you send it off THAT drop ...
hope your able get back at it soon, all the best😎
thanks Keith, yeah i hope i am back soon too
Awesome Dave. Really enjoyed watching your MTB journey over the past few years. Congrats on the GBU drop redemption, really shows how far you've come!
thanks Andrew, yeah i have come a long way
Just wait a week or two first for the track to be open next time
hell no hahaha
Amazing stuff. Very inspiring and motivational 👏👏👏 I broke my collar bone badly a year ago and have lost all confidence. Barely been out on the bike since so great to see the mental barriers can be overcome. Just wish I had the mental strength of Dave. Respect 👊
Yeah mate but it was three years ago I had that crash. The collarbone is a surprisingly bad injury I think. I thought it would be fairly minor like a rib break, but it isn’t. Just take your time and enjoy riding with no pressure. Took me a long time to put that crash behind me
I mentioned it a couple months ago...but I've watched you from the beginning progress and it is truly amazing to watch. You are riding well!
thanks John, yeah doing the gbu was a big step up from the stuff i was hitting at the start of this channel. It's funny ,because you often don't even notice yourself progressing, till you really test yourself like with this drop. Progression can be so gradual, it is almost unnoticable, especially if you are just a weekend rider
Dave your a legend don't ever give up the biking you will get where you want to be eventually. I've watched all your videos you seem like a real cool chilled out guy keep up the vids pleasssse. And can't wait to see you back on the bike soon.
thanks pal, yeah i don't think i will be giving up yet, i still have so much more improving to do
Dave you are a legend! It took some serious balls to take on that drop after last time. I always look at it when I go up the push-up path and think to myself "no f*****g way am I going near that!". Big respect mate, you take it easy and get that knee sorted.
yeah its a scary drop, it needs careful consideration unless your skills are very sharp. It is can easily catch you out if you don't give it proper respect. I deserved to get messed up the first time. I should never have gone off it. I will always regret that i did
Dave I think you are awesome. Watching your videos has probably saved me from many more crashes, I've learned a lot from your misfortune! Glad you made it safely this time.
hahah happy to help
I was with every peddle leading up to that drop and was as stoked as you when you pulled it off 💪 😉 hope the knee gets stronger over the next few months 👍
haha thanks pal, yeah i was scared out my wits to tell the truth, i just knew it was the right time to go for it though
I had a bad accident 4 years ago resulting in broken collarbone, several broken ribs and crushed vertebrae off a smaller drop that I didn’t notice was there. It knocked my confidence so i can identify. Well done Dave 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 smashed it
thanks Phil, yeah, you can really mess yourself up off a small feature, especially if you don't know the trail
Dropped like a pro mate really well done. Youve come so far on your mountain bike. Really made up for you 🤙🤙
thanks Greg, yeah i was mega buzzing and relieved to have this victory
@@DaveJenvey on to the next mission now! Really good to see. If ever your near ludlow give me a shout id love to have a ride out with you. Your a top bloke. Really well done
So you rode this when the trail was closed for repairs, removing the barriers and so damaging a trail under construction and slowing the process just so you could make a video?
i was thinking this too
Been watching the fdtv guys saying that people were riding gbu before it was open.
I've stayed away, now they've given the green light I'm hitting it on the weekend.
£20k raised to upgrade it along with corkscrew.
Total disrespect.for the graft I'm afraid
Was the opening of the GBU closed trail delayed pal? I still haven't heard about any news that the GBU drop has needed maintenance since i made this vid. Always gonna be haters whatever you do
@@DaveJenvey if the trail was open then you would not get these comments it is that simple
Ian Jenkins but I’m not interested in being popular. My channel is about overcoming obstacles, both physical and psychological and going balls out to achieve my goals. Pleasing everyone isn’t on the agenda for me. You always gonna have haters whatever do
Love your videos Dave 👌 You’ve improved so much it’s great to see! I hope the knee heals up soon mate 👍 🌲🌲🚲🌲🌲
thanks Mitch, yeah the knee is a lot better now. Just needed a bit of physio and rest
Nice one Dave. Balls of steel to nail that after that horror crash you had.
thanks Paul, yeah i was well scared i must admit
Dave Mate you’ve nailed them all wow your confidence is showing massively well done brother.! That drop off looks scary as hell.! What a great vid to watch mate thanks 👊🏻👊🏻🤟🤟
cheers Jon, yeah it was deffo scary, especially as last time i tried it i nearly killed myself
Well done Dave! Great to see you come back and smash it!! 👊🍻
cheers pal, yeah i had a much better idea of how to approach this this time
Superb Dave, well done mate..... Take it easy with the knee and see you back soon 👍
cheers Robert
BIG Redemtption, amazing Dave!
Then you threw in a bonus crash for the fans. Epic video.
yep there is almost always a bonus crash haha
First Dave video I ever watched was the “novice boy gets broken in half at FoD” 😃. I remember it like losing my virginity or my first pint 🍺. 4 o’clock can’t come soon enough 💪
hahaha, yeah that crash still gives me nightmares. I remember it all in vivid detail, going over the bars and my shoulder and head hitting the ground. Was quite the experience
Well done Dave! That must’ve been pretty scary to revisit but you smashed it!
i was scared shitless pal haha thanks
Dave your one of my heroes, great commitment, hope you get well soon. Will look forward to your return, enjoy some rest, cheers Alan.
haha cheers Alan
Dave you’re a legend in your own underpants!! My heart was in my mouth watching it. So happy for you bud. But!! Not gonna lie I was wincing at some of your jumps. Your progression is spot on and you have improved so much, get some coaching mate, Olly Morris is the man for you, w/c rider and full time coach (pro ride ) he will get you to where you want to be. Fair play Dave and nuff god dam respeck 👊👊👊
thanks keith yeah, still got a long way to go for sure, yeah i will probably get some more coaching at some point, thanks for the recommendation
Dave Jenvey keep it up mate love watching your progress brother 💪
Well done Dave takes some big ones to go back and tackle a nemesis, big respect 👊🏻
yeah it is a nasty drop i think, unless you are a really really good rider
congratulations Dave, that drop is very scary and this section is super steep!
Yes Dave! Impressive to come back to the site of such a bad injury and hit it again, and perfectly this time. So much progression in your riding between that crash and this effort. That must have felt good aye?!!
Yeah it felt awesome, but my life moved on
Nice progression mate! I’m surprised at how far I’ve progressed when I look back. Hope your back on the bike soon! If you get bored I’ve got loads of videos on my channel to watch
no worries mate i will check them out
Definitely see the progression in your riding👍, top marks for doing the drop again not sure I would
I had to face it again it John, i just had to lol. I couldn't have gone to my grave happy if i never tried it again at least once
Nice job Dave and good luck with your recovery
thanks pal
Sucks about the knee dude, hope it heals soon. Been great seeing the regulars vids again.
cheers Richie, yeah it does suck about the knee. I was putting in hard yards at the pump track and really progressing
I stopped to to hello when you were resting at the top of the hill. It was my first time at FoD and I loved it.
Well done on conquering that jump.
oh hi pal, glad you had a great day. Fod is a brilliant place to ride, probably the best place for miles around
@@DaveJenvey Yes definitely. We're going back soon.
Keep up the fab vids.
Well done Dave 💪 love your vids 🤙 hope the knee gets better
Thanks, me too
Absolutely class dude, that took massive guts to fo that drop after the previous catastrophe.
Congrats mate 👍🎉
thanks yeah it was a big psychological hurdle to jump over this one
Oh yes . That must of took some balls mate. Awsome job... not seen your blogs for ages, wasnt getting notifications for some reason 🙄. Now having a catch up session 😀
thanks Jim, cheers.
Well done lad, youve progressed alot from way back
yeah it is funny watching some of the old vids. I really didn't know anything about mtb at all
Fair play Dave! Hope you were buzzing off the back of that! Well done man!
thanks Rab, yes i was buzzing and relieved
Blimey, nice one for conquering that drop, you ride so much better now, fair play to you mate, perseverance is paying off big time 😃.....Rampage next? Lol
watching rampage with a cup of tea in my hand definitely lol
Well done Dave! it can be hard going back to a place that you hurt yourself but you're more that capable. Give us a shout for round two of off piste Cannock when your knee has recovered🤟
yeah i will do paul, i've heard there is some new good stuff up there
@@DaveJenvey yeah Dave there running nice at the moment. Some good lines I think will be right up your street
Wow...
You have definitely gone up a level in your riding and hit hero level with your bravery. Great to see Dave.
I just the knee gets better soon mate.
Great vid.
Looking forward to many more.
Cheers
thanks Paul, yeah the pump track has brought my riding on lately. That is the best place to progress i think
@@DaveJenvey
You use your full sus mtb on the pump track.?
I'm crap at riding pump tracks.
Good tip though.
I'm at 417 Monday I'll give it a go.
Paul J Nicholls nah you need a jump bike or bmx. But trust me. If you want to get to be good at jumps and drops , then you need to put in a lot of hours at the pump track.
@@DaveJenvey
I'm going to buy a cheap jump bike and give it a go.
I'll try and persevere with it because I can see the difference it's made for your riding and confidence.
Cheers buddy.
Look after that knee mate. 👍
Dave you never fail to inspire all generations of mountain bikers , does not matter if your a teenager or a 48 year old mountain bike veteran like myself , young or old we can all take something from your posts , well done keep it going never give in 👊👊👊👊
thanks Neil, yeah we all have the same struggle, it isn't an easy sport
Yes Lad!! 🤘🏽🤘🏽 Sending Everything well done bro, good to see the confidence coming through!! I’m heading to Forrest if Dean Friday if you fancy joining me and showing me around 👌🏽👌🏽
i'm off the bike at the moment pal sorry because of my dodgy knee. Have a good time though
Best riding I’ve seen of you getting better man 🙌
thanks mate, yeah i have improved
Been down there today now the tracks finished it's so much better really flowy and the jumps at the top are just a thing of beauty
i will have to go check it out now its finished when my knee is better
Congrats on conquering GBU! Heal up mate.
cheers pal
Well done dave ya coming on leaps & bounds glad you did gub drop
thanks David, yeah it was a buzz
Glad you got your redemption. I broke my collarbone and required surgery as well. I can't get my redemption though. The place I broke my collarbone no longer does the downhill slalom races. I so wanted to try it again to prove to myself I could do it. I will always have the scar as a reminder of that day though...lol.
yeah the scar does look kind of badass though doesn't it
Oh yeah. My life is about to become complete. Godspeed Dave Jenvey.
hahaha, hope you enjoyed it
Take your time with the recovery. We will be here waiting
cheers Richard
yeees dave..real progress there no doubt..that was a hell of a crash at the big drop..to yer credit you went for it again and sent it..just the way yer getting over the roots and sending the blind drops shows how far yerv come..get that knee rested you,ll be back in no time
thanks pal, yeah i've come a long way
Well done dave . It feels so good
it deffo felt good mate, and a relief more than anything
Brilliant Dave🎉 👍 well done 👏👍 get doing them squats as we r all gonna b missing u 😭 ,sending healing vibes xx
thanks Lee-ann for the healing vibes
This channel is very quickly becoming my favourite MTB watch. Legend!
thanks Tim
Nice one Dave! That takes some balls going back and doing something like that where you have really injured yourself before👏👏 I feel inspired to try myself now!.... I have done the bottom drop, but not had the balls to do the top one yet.
Love your videos.....One of the first I saw was when you crashed on that GBU drop. This video now has to be my favourite.... great to see the progression and fears being conquered!
I rode past you at the jumps at the top of the DH tracks a couple of weeks ago when you were shooting this... wasn't sure if it was you when I past.... like passing a celebrity when your not quite sure if it really is who you think it is!😂 Love your channel though mate..... keep the vids coming and hope you get back on the bike soon! 👍
Yeah the bottom drop is a very different beast to the top one. Just be careful and don’t lean right back like I did when I crashed. Totally go for it though if you are confident
Love this video Dave and well done on the drop, so I’m going to have to wait months now for another video, shame on you 🤣🤣🤣 how will we survive 👍👍👍👍
haha glad you liked it
Fair play for having the balls to get that done big Dave 🤟🏽
cheers Paul
Man! You have come on soooo much! Amped for you!!!
cheers pal, i used to be into rollerblading too back in the 90's, haha
FairPlay to you, watched your vids from the start. That must have taken some guts 🤙

yeah this was a big step up for me for sure
Yes Dave, that’s fucking awesome. Well happy for you, your perseverance and determination is seriously paying off.
Hope your knee sorts itself pretty quickly. 👍
cheers Ken, its gonna be interesting with the knee, hopefully it comes good
Yes Dave! Redemption! The best feeling! Hope your knee gets better soon man. Take it easy, look forward to new videos! Yyeeeewwww!

thanks Coynie
Crazy that was 3 years ago and being an early sub, yes you have progressed so much (better than me now no doubt). So happy for you that you've smashed that drop demon, Dave.
thanks Paul, yeah where do the years go, it is ridiculous
Fair play Dave for doing that drop nice one 👍
thanks Paul
Rest easy Dave, hope to see you up and fighting fit soon, love your vids, even the Mrs watches with me, (but she thinks we’re all “bloody mad”) you got Balls of Steel Man!!!
yeah its a crazy sport, i do question the sanity of a lot of the guys i ride with who send way bigger stuff than me hahaha
Dave fair play, you didn't let the GBU get to you, its about stepping up and knowing in ability that you can do it, get well soon your come back stronger than ever 🤟
thanks Rob, yeah i was scared for this one
Yes!!! Dave👌👊 get it there man.
Just get that knee rested up, and you’ll be back with a vengeance. Nice one Dave🤘

Watching that scared the shit out of me. Fortunately, I was viewing it from the best possible room in the house.
haha Jim, yeah man, thats like me watching rampage, scares the life out of me watching those nutters
Well done Dave 🤟
thanks Nathan
Nice one Dave, ready to race FOD next year now! You deffo need an XL bike though, you could see its way to small for you off that drop. The longer reach of an XL would give you way more confidence at your height mate. Hope the knee mends soon
Cheers Jim, oh man I dunno about racing lol. You deffo reckon an xl bike then. Maybe I should test ride one sometime
@@DaveJenvey yeh get on some demo days mate. Sure I could help you out with a deal with someone too
Dave.... I have the upmost respect for you to go back and face your demons 👌. I had a big crash off the bottom section of Mr Rooty (runs next to the skills are) at the FOD and my recovery was nothing in comparison with yours but that knocked my confidence on jumps BIG TIME!! not sure I will ever be tempted to do that one particular jump that sent me to A&E so again.... respect ✌️
yeah it's a tough one after you have a big crash. It took me 3 years to face this again though. So don't count yourself out yet, it takes time

Nice one fella, hard to go back to face it after smashing yourself to pieces like that. Good work.
thanks mate, yeah it was a very scary proposition, but i knew it was the right time for it
