Well it looks like I did the 3 micron twice but being that the 3 micron section was only half of a strop side it should be around the same amount of passes as the others! I don’t count my passes nor do I have a set amount. I have been stropping for awhile and I go off of my instinct. The feedback from the strop as well as visual inspection and knowing whats expected from each grit/micron rating also can help me discern when I can move on to the next one. If you’re starting off I wouldn’t worry about counting passes just focus on the feedback, your technique and watch closely so you can see what’s going on! Also take it slow, there’s no need to rush and that’s one of the biggest things that will mess up your edge! Forgot to mention this stuff in the video but anyways, I hope this was helpful!!

Thank you and I appreciate the sub! To answer your question, no it doesn’t affect toughness. Toughness depends on the blade steel, blade heat treat, hardness, blade geometry etc. No type of stropping will ever effect toughness, the only thing that you can do to affect toughness is the angle you choose to sharpen at. Or if you heated the blade up past the temperature it was tempered at some how.
Is there a diamond micron equivalent to stone grit? I have heard you say 12microns to 1500 grit, but beyond that, I am a bit lost. After a 5000 grit or 6000 grit stone, what would be my progression with Gunny juice if I was trying to work on straight razors with strops?

I rarely clean my basswood strops, you don’t need to clean them until they are completely black which takes alot! When you do need to clean it just wipe it with a paper towel and 91% alcohol!

If you are good at using it for stropping with standard compound it will only be better with the gunny juice. It will polish much faster because the diamonds cut faster. I haven’t tried it personally so I can’t say for certain but I’m pretty positive that’s how it would go. I also will say I highly recommend giving basswood a try, it’s extremely underrated because not a ton of people use it but it’s really a game changer in my opinion. Especially if you are aiming for the absolute highest level of sharpness!
I’m confused. I don’t really understand how to know which micron gunny juice I should purchase. I’m fine with purchasing more than one. If I’m finishing on a snap ton 2000, or 5000 grit wet stone, what micron should I get. If I’m finishing on a 1200 grit atoma diamond, which micron should I get? Should I get more than one?
It’s not that it’s easier to hold the angle because I’ve developed that muscle memory. But it is easier to feel if you are at the right angle. The feedback from the wood is very clear and if you aren’t at the right angle it will feel like you’re scratching the wood. With leather it’s a little harder to tell if you’re at the right angle and you also have to be careful with how much pressure you apply because the leather can wrap around the apex. Leather works awesome and I like it just as much but it’s less forgiving and if you are just starting off learning to strop, the wood is the way to go.

Looks like you're a little cramped on the length you're using for each micron. I'm betting that's basswood from Hobby Lobby which is what I use for GJ. as recommended by the creator, Scott Gunn. I found HL's 10" x 1 3/4" to be a handy size using about 6" or so for the application and the rest for grip, and only use one side per micron. Also, for my needs, don't really need mirror finishes so only use 1, 3, 6 and 12. Try the J stroke.
Yeah man this is basswood from hobby lobby! I normally would do only one grit per side but I wanted to do the full progression for the video and I only had these 3 8” pieces so I made due with what I had. These emulsions belong to a buddy so I wanted to try them out and get the video done so I could send them back to him quickly. Also, I normally don’t do the entire progression nor do I need to, I have a lot of other videos of me getting perfect mirrors with a lot less steps.
Also, I like doing a variety of strokes and I also prefer a much larger stropping surface. I’m friends with Scott Gunn and he has definitely helped me improve my sharpening! Scott is a great guy! And yeah I found it ironic that Scott recommends basswood because that’s my favorite stropping surface. I like the feedback it gives and the fact that it doesn’t wrap around the apex and round your edge like leathers do when you use too much pressure. And I normally only use 1 micron and sometimes 3. I take it all the way down to 5 micron on the stones. And for maintenance I just use the 1 micron and it works like a charm.
I do it both ways but when you hold it you get better feedback and you can more easily maintain the angle because you can tilt the strop as well as the knife. All depends how im feeling that day but there are some benefits for both ways depending on your skill level.
Gunny Juice is a good product but it stupidly expensive. I don't understand why anybody dish out the cash for it. Is it better then other diamond pastes, of course not. 1 Micron is 1micron. Gunny Juice should be $2.00 for comparable product. Really, why would you support Scott's overpriced products.
Its not cheap but yes it’s definitely worth it. Its very effective and those little bottles last a long time. A little goes a long way. It really just depends how into sharpening you are and how far you want to take it. You can get an extremely sharp edge without it but it has some big advantages when it comes to mirror edges and edge maintenance. There’s several ways you can do all of these things so I suggest trying out a variety and deciding what you like for yourself! For me personally I find that Gunny Juice on Basswood works best for edge maintenance and for the finishing touch after sharpening! Hope this helps 👊🏼
I don’t find them to be overpriced, I agree that they aren’t cheap but you get what you pay for and based off of the performance he could justify charging more and people would still buy it. I know Scott pretty well and he’s the furthest thing from greedy, he gives more to the community than anyone I know. That’s another reason I support him because he is genuinely a good person.

I think sanding the basswood first helps. I went 800 grit, but next time will go higher.

Any thoughts on nano cloth strops? Picked up 9 micron with a nano cloth strops for kme now I'm hooked and getting 6&3 .

Probably 6 or 3 micron. Really depends how polished you can get it with the ceramic you’re using. 6 would be the safe bet.

6,3&1 are the only ones I really use. That should cover all your bases

Basswood, and nope there are many stropping materials. Basswood just happens to be the one I have found to work the best. Second only to kangaroo!
