9 years old, under the duvet in the dark listening to a crackly transistor radio from far off distant lands with strange names. Peter Jones was simply the best. This takes me back.
Peter Jones, the greatest football commentator ever. Used to listen to his work on BBC as Liverpool played and generally won in Europe for 13 years. RIP great man.
The masters at work, the legendary Peter Jones and Alan Parry, both commentators with superbly modulated voices, capturing what was a memorable match in Rome, crystal clear despite the crackles
wow, that Peter Jones commentary at the end took me back, my dad had all of the European cup goals from the run to Rome on an audio cassette from that year, I think I wore it out. Great post mate.
Tommy Smith changed his mind & stayed on at Anfield for one more season - a foot injury ruled him out of Liverpool's victorious defence of the European Cup the following year, although he still picked up another winners medal & he was a summariser for ITV's coverage at Wembley that night.
I certainly agree with you,Peter Jones was the best commentator ever on radio,he made you feel like you was at the game when you was listening at home on the old wireless
Nice to hear Alan Parry there....on the ball as ever with Liverpool's second goal..."Keegan! No wait,I'm sure it was Kennedy!....No hang on....I'm SURE it was Smith! Lol.....and calling it a "tragedy" when Borussia equalised! Nothing like a bit of melodrama,is there...?!!

Peter Jones is my favourite commentator of all time.

Legendary commentator
Wow.... That theme tune brings backs memories!!!
If Radio paints the better pictures, then Peter Jones was the Michaelangelo of Radio commentators.

Hillsborough destroyed him
Never knew Rosie was on the BBC, always thought he was an ITV Sport man
@Glenn Morris Yes he was a good boxing commentator, still have Duran v Hearns on tape somewhere.. also done a few of the early Eubank fights.

Hilarious wrong identification of the scorer of Tommy Smith’s goal. I watched this live on BBC1. Front page news in all the papers next day.
Poor Uli Steilke.. on the losing side for BM in 77, and Real Madrid in 81.
