It’s nice to see a younger generation find a positive aspect of what we experienced back in 1979 with D&D and create a new game that’s modeled after that. I’m looking forward to getting the shadow dark book and seeing more from Kelsey in the future.
Regarding Optional rules add-ons etc. I do love how spartan Kelsey kept the core rules. The result of this is an excellent "chassis" for expanding and modifying the game to suite a particular Genre, Theme or Style. For example... one could swap out the random talent tables for the classes with new customized tables that reflect a specific theme or setting.
I know this might be like a drop in the bucket kind of comment but both Kelsey's minimalism and new take on osr meets 5e has reinvigorated gaming in my group and has even inspired me to start a couple of homeschool Shadowdark gaming groups. But also this channel d20 plays is another inspiration towards efficiency and playing the game swiftly and with the highest amount of tension but also a large amount of fun and play for the characters and not so much grandiose soapboxing with the DM ( me) you have really taught me how to run a game and give the characters room to grow and express themselves without being overbearing or long-winded on my part. I really can't throw praise enough at you both for how much you have improved my gaming leadership and my groups gaming experiences just in the last year!
Great interview! Wish I could have been there. I definitely have some questions for Kelsey that I would love her take on. I'll put them down here just in case. 1. Do you envision monsters continuing to attack dying characters or leave them alone? How would you handle a dying PC being attacked, maybe reduce the death timer by one? 2. Have you considered upcasting spells, like using higher spellcasting DCs to deal more damage or effect higher level creatures? 3. Have you considered granting priests automatic advantage on Cure Wounds like wizards have with Magic Missile? My priest player had bad luck and failed almost every time he would make a check to heal someone, which he found pretty frustrating. 4. The clunckiest part of constant initiative and limited light is group movement. It doesn't capture the imagery of the group walking together, huddled around a torch. Have you considered allowing all characters to use their movement simultaneously during a crawling round and then resolve their actions in initiative order?

ShadowDark really captured old school feel and modern speed for me.
She's great, and the game looks like a lot of fun to play.
Right on both counts!
The named "monsters" in this book are just fantastic, SO juicy and inspirational for the DM!
They really are!

That is huge praise! Thank you so much! I hope you and your friends have many fantastic years of gaming ahead of you!
The cursed scroll zines - with Germaine on this one - they're really add depth and scope to ShadowDark.
Agreed! And, some great adventures.
