Yes, flybacks spark for largely two reasons: a) they're cracked. it happens...they're old. b) it's got water in it. The water results in a wonderful shower of green sparks till it kills the power supply. The inverter board did not flip the image; it inverted the colors. Nintendo used the standard raster output...but colors were inverted. I actually used a board from a junked 20EZ for a video poker machine that had an odd video inversion. The monitor has an internal voltage reulation on the line input; so it will handle 120VAC line voltage just fine. In fact...I only ever tested these things by hooking them up directly to line. The isolation transformer was not stepping down; otherwise it's not an isolation. It merely isolated the electrical path to prevent users from getting nasty shocks. I stopped rebuilding 20EZ's once the someone came out with an amp and inverter board that runs off standard 12V. That inverter already runs on normal voltage...but that audio amp is tapped in to the screen voltage.. The CRT's are usually burned beyond a crisp; I didn't like the risk; and they're just going to fail down a few years down the road.
Jay thanks for all the info. I didn't know it was the colors that were reversed. There is definitely some burn in on this guy but we'll see how bad it is once I'm able to actually test it. I knew the 20EZ's had their issues but I didn't know they were so failure prone. Which monitors do you prefer?
I've only had mine since a little before black friday and it has overheated once. Never mind I was doing some repairs and left a magnetic parts bowl on top of it. Then started playing some Mortal Kombat...with the magnetic parts bowl still on it. Super duper dumb of me.
