    Speaking of spinning steel wool, I had this crazy chemistry teacher named Smitty. He once performed the legendary “Green Flame.” After donning goggles, thick gloves, and a heavy apron, he gripped a big wad of steel wool with long tongs, and soaked it in liquid copper sulfate concentrate. We students lowered the blackout curtains, cut the lights, and backed up as far as we could. Then Smitty set the wool on fire with a blowtorch. Copper sulfate burns hot and bright, with a vivid neon green color. He then started circling his arm, holding the tongs with the burning, dripping, fiery neon mess, faster and faster and faster. When he got up to speed, it became a five-foot-wide circle of bright flaming green light. It was a spectacular stunt. He kept that up for a minute or so, until the flame started dying out. Gobbets of copper sulfate, still burning dimly green, were left sticking to the walls and dripping from the ceiling. Smitty was visibly spent from the exertion. He saved that stunt for the end of the year. He was like a rock star that day.

    Wrong TV, wrong WIImote technique.
    Those old CRTs are far too strong for it. You needed a 2000's era flatscreen to have a chance. Even then, you had to do an overhand throw, so the Wiimote goes in nose first. As would happen playing Wii Tennis when the wrist strap breaks.
    And that's the story of how I killed three TVs in college.

      I think also the mix of fuel/oxygen is pretty critical, I remember watching mythbusters talking about much testing to get theirs working right. Which is pretty risky and complex sort of testing, to be fair. IIRC, they said something about 4.5% propane to air, but they were testing from 2% to 15% in their setup, and it depends on if you use air or oxygen+air as your mixing ingredient. Throwing a small amount of lox in the bottom of the bottle would make things very dicey for inside testing, I'd think.

      CRT tvs created their picture by scanning the image in a similar way you read a book - one line at a time and from side to side. But CRTs scanned each line of the image at 625 lines per second - so although only one pixel was illuminated at any one time, the rapidity of the beam inside the CRT made look like a constant image. In fact, much of the screen was black for most of the time. There are slow-motiuon videos on here showing this to good effect.

      I found the amount of static often depended on what channel tv you were watching at what time of night. 😅

    Well done crew! 👏 For me, it's a toss up for my fave. The whirling sparks were hypnotic in the medium slow motion speed. The shapes of the gas voids of the sparklers underwater were incredible.

    1:25 something you need to know, back in the days when we build something it was solid, durable, strong. Not like all the weak stock of these days.

      I was gonna say those tvs were built DIFFERENT. it took like 3 people to comfortably move 60inch tv back then and even then you were thankful it was on wheels or sliders

    • @Glotttis
      @Glotttis 14 days ago +1

      LOL CRTs were physically "tough" only because their design required it. There is nothing durable about CRT except from this thick glass used and overall mass of the unit. A typical LCD display can maintain picture quality for many more years than typical CRT ever could. CRTs used to start wearing out and fading pretty fast.

    I have stated for YEARS that the boys could make money off the prints of their slowies.
    This is iconic.
