Tom Waits just needs to cover every song ever made.
THE best version of this song ever
I'm 25 - played this on my father's funeral today. We've had a broken and complicated relationship close to none. Thought there still was time to fix it someday, somewhere, somehow. There wasn't.
I'm really saddened to read that; my heart goes out to you for your loss. You were too young to begin building a new relationship with your father; at 25 you're still only on the threshold of adulthood, of manhood, and so have still so much to learn about yourself, about Life, about people, and about the person, the man, that your father was. Your loss of your father so young is heartbreaking... but please don't beat yourself up about how your relationship with him was; it's just where you were when he went. He loved you from the moment you were born, and you know that he did. And he knew that you loved him too.
Stay strong, and carry the love that you had for each other in your memories of him.
@@JeffH59you have a good heart.
Makes me sad to read that. I'm sorry about the loss of your father.
The arrangement of this recording is stunning. If I listen to this with headphones, and I can't help but tear up.

I cry
He seems to sing on behalf of the broken, the beaten and the hopeless. Keep dreaming...
I just love his music 🎶 so much meaning captured in a few precious minutes 😢
The feeling just grows and grows.
Beautiful arrangement
I dare say this is not only the best version of this song ever recorded, it might just be the best version of any song ever recorded in the history of human civilization.
Oh, indeed. Most definitely. Yes.
❤
Love this man's music other worldly no one like him anywhere
There's a place for us
Somewhere a place for us
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us somewhere
There's a time for us
Someday a time for us
Time together, a time to spare
Time to learn, time to care
Someday, somewhere
We'll find a new way of living
We'll find a way of forgiving
Somewhere
There's a place for us, a time and a place for us
Hold my hand and we're half way there
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
Somehow, someday, somewhere

Afterglow brought me here, in 8/17/22. His voice is unusual and fits this pretty song.
The definitive version
Absolutely. Hands down.
Mr Waits... you are a dream! Love, love love you ❤ I thank God for giving you to us... and blessing us with decades of your iconic gift.
So lovely.
I like how he evokes Louis Armstrong on "Somewhere".
Was für eine Stimme! Gänsehaut!
Although not a huge fan of this man’s sound…
This song pierces my heart. I will not stop listening to it…
Not until the wheels fall off. 💔
not trying to be a jerk this man's sound has never stayed the same over 40 years he just keeps evolving. A lot of people don't like the current vocals but listen to his first album he's basically crooning just with (his) amazing songwriting behind him.
This album really does sound like music from like 1933. Classic Tom Waits!
Finalement, un chanteur original avec une voix remplie d’émotions. Thank you sir. 😊😊
It's valentine's day, for me also Tom Waits-day.....here's My Blue Valentine.
💙
WHAT A VOICE🥩😍

I'm a simple man. I see Tom Waits, I like.
My late. Brother Jack Harris hooked me up on Tom in the late 70's. Been strung out every since. Cool mfk'r
why are so many youtube comments prefaced with "I'm a simple man"

Afterglow brought me here, 8/17/22. I had never heard this arrangement or his voice before. It reminds me of Louis Armstrong, and then he shifts totally out of it and back and forth. lol
This version closes the movie, "Afterglow." It is so powerful.
My top five all time - Waits, Friedman,Mull,Springsteen & Costello !!!
How's that for eclectic taste in music ?
Merveilleux
I only knew Tom Waits from the "Saturday Night" album when I heard this song, which is the first on Blue Valentines, and I thought :
- Is it English ? (because of the way he sings "for us", I thought it was a strange alien language)
- There are two different people singing, but definitely not Tom Waits
I even came to think it was the wrong album ! His voice had changed so much, the way he plays with it, and well just about everything is different. This was when I realised he's an incredibly talented and unpredictable artist.
It's true!!!
So very true
Or maybe he's actually an alien
WOW
It’s like listening to the intoxicated old man on the last bus home but quite beautiful nonetheless
Timely..
Agreed!!!
This is for the broken ones
Maria!!
💌thankful ...
Nice

improbably brilliant reinvention of bernstein's west side story standard.
Anyone know the name of the trumpet player?
Onya Tom
💔🥺
To fully appreciate the understated orchestration of this recording, listen to something like Barbara Streisand's cover. Really reveals why this was brilliant - especially the trumpet.
(Barbara had feeling for the song, but the grandiose orchestration was god-awful in contrast.)

He brings such a poignant, never never quality to this song
He sounds like a muppet
You look like a guy who's never been laid.
WHAT A DREADFUL SINGER RUINED A WONDERFUL SONG LISTED TO MATT MONROE SINGING THIS LOVELY SONG FROM WEST SIDE STORY
By far the most horrible version I have ever heard, at first I thought this was a joke (sounds like the Cookie Monster singing it). What the heck does anyone hear that even remotely sounds like or even comes close to the feeling of this song.
I get it. But listen to his whole catalogue before you dismiss this version, which is, I think, his only cover song in 50 years.
Tom's voice brings a world weary contrast to the soothing strings. To me it gives a gritty poignancy to the song.
It's the roughness of his voice (which strangely comes off as very vulnerable) against the beautiful orchestra that makes my heart break. Seriously this one gets me crying everytime. Guess you've got to have a little bit of bohemian in you to get it.
Maybe if you weren't so obtuse you'd enjoy it.
I hear a human being moved by the melody and feeling of singing a song he, like so many of us are moved by. And I hear a human being who doesn't give a shit if some fucking arsehole like you likes his voice.
