I tried this with good results. I'd also add the following: After playing the phrase as loud as possible then play it as quiet as possible to build in the full dynamic range and grip requirements 👍🏻👍🏻
Great video. Looking to get back into my Metal playing after years of having not played due to severe illness and this is exactly what I need to start getting my fluidity back. It’s amazing how much skill you can lose when you don’t practise or even just play regularly for a while.
Picking speed ive found is affected by pick width and how you pick in addition to how fast i can think. For example i can pick faster than i can anticipate what to play next. So if im doing alternate outside picking three notes per string the pick direction changes from string to string so i have to pay attention to timing as well as pick angle which affects the sound. Also the pick angles affect if i make mistakes in picking. For me using less force when i pick is the rule as when i play right handed, i can play left too, my picking is like a hammer so i focus on the tone quality and that varies too, say i use a 0.88, 1 or 1.6 mm pick they all sound and play very differently. I use the 1.6 if im trying to increase accuracy at speed and the thinner picks to see if what im doing with the heavier pick is accurate as thinner picks reveal picking inaccuracies easily. My main thing is how does it sound? The muscle stuff only fulfills my desire to practice so long. So mostly i find things that i want to sound nice then work technique stuff around that, always using strict alternate picking for arpeggios as well as scale sequences as ive found its easier to stay in time than economy directional picking. Ive done directional picking and ive found it feels akin to driving a car with no brakes, whereas with alternate picking the pick direction changes when using odd numbers of notes per string, even numbers say 2 or four it doesnt, but the pick direction is always consistent so i can focus on the music rather than the techniques.
I’ve practiced using deadstop before just I’d you mess up, start over at a slower speed sorta as self discipline to make sure you get it right. It worked for super complicated licks but not with speed. His reps are great for improving speed and I love it!
Damn! this video feels like those "I'm gonna show you the secret to become rich" videos, where the guy spends like 3 hrs saying "I'm gonna show you the secret" and then only tells you the secret in the last 5 min of the video...
What the FUCK. Thought this was bullshit click bait. Changed the way I was sitting and BAM I was hitting notes I always struggled to hit. Jesus I feel stupid. Thankyou!
will it help increase the speed of playing riffs that are complex due to fast downpicking? (like BMTH - Pray For Plagues) Or it's mostly for a solo parts??
Use a stiff pick, hold it so only the tip is barely sticking out, and practice 4 hours a day, every day, for 10 years. Some people will be super shredders, most will be average, and some will end up playing blues.
The biggest problem is consistency. For example I can Nail some of the hardest Petrucci solos after not playing the guitar for some times at all, other times things are just not happening.... The only consistency there is, your body failing your mind again and again :)
Had that problem, now I practice both. The reason is you will be playing things that simply don't use directional picking and will force you to alternate. Proof? Just play 2 note per string pentatonic scale, or "the one and only 1234 spider exercise" 😃
One of your best videos so far, Mike! I already knew some of these things before watching this video, but that’s probably because I had the natural tendency to do the correct thing without consciously realizing it until you pointed it out. But I also learned some new things here! Terrible tone, but excellent wisdom as always! …just like me, but with only some of the wisdom. EDIT: Why are you so mean to Greg 😢 he’s just trying his best…
If I can just get one new idea from these kinds of videos that I'll put on while smoking a bowl, I figure it was worth my time watching it. His videos make me chuckle here and there :)
@@HowToPracticeGuitaryou actually put “getting fast THIS easily should be illegal, not, “this video should be illegal”. 😂 Very well explained video though, the best I’ve seen on speed picking.

Honestly, of all the guitar tips, I only get instant result from the lessons you've uploaded. Thank God I found your channel.
Yeah, this guy's thumb video literally allowed me to play all matter of chords and position changes, where it caused me pain and discomfort before
it's good and gives freedom to learn new shapes and positions
Dude, your videos are the absolute best guitar instructional videos on youtube. Hilarious and completely correct.
Can’t wait to try those tests and see how I do. What a clear and logical way to gauge how I’m doing before trying to go faster and sounding like crap.
Another excellent video! Your tips are among the very few online that actually get results.

Glad to hear you are doing better. Hope you are back shredding 🤘
Amazing tutorial brother. This is illuminating, seriously
My name is Wang Peen Lo and our village really appreciated this video
Great video and your production quality is much better (which I know is a pain to do). I will practice those tips.
love this new vid format

Thank you very much for these helpful tips!
Great suggestions.....all helpful. Thanks.
Thank u bro I am following u for past 2 yr and finally I can say I have unlocked speed but have to practice more for complex fast licks❤...thank u
Hey Mike! I believe I had the pleasure of some 1 on 1 time with you while you were editing this. Excellent as always.

Awesome video Mike! 👏
Thanks Dan!
Absolutely the best guitar teacher on youtube
This is the best guitar video on youtube.
greattips but the fast cut editing gives me a headache
these videos are getting so much more funny!! 😂😂
I basically start by only playing with my picking hand to get a hold of the tempo, I thought it would be a common practice
This is the most AMAZING and AMUSING vid I have ever come across in speed building...10q 10q 10q for this!❤❤❤❤
"How can less be more? It's impossible." Hard to argue with that logic.

I would go back to work on getting SLOW 😎
will it help increase the speed of playing riffs that are complex due to fast downpicking? (like BMTH - Pray For Plagues)
Or it's mostly for a solo parts??
6:09 is the golden number 😄
Where is that scale practice sheet/tab that I can download?
I have to say he can really really help you play fast

which metronome app are you using on this vid?
Man i learned directionnal picking, but im worried, my brain can't do alternate anymore, which is okay anyway lol

Would be better without the slapstick.

A whole bowl? Are you sure you’re not a bass player 😏
(This post was made by the bass player gang)
Thanks for the tips but it would have been helpful if you could give an example of how the exercise sounds
Ostin Powers know the subject
just record the video slow and speed it up in post lmao it's easy what are you talking about
I feel like if Saul Goodman is trying to sell me a guitar course, I mean this in the best way possible. Amazing engaging xDD
I need to watch that show.

This video should be illegal
Yeh bro, that's why it's in the title bro
@@HowToPracticeGuitar yess watching the video now! Nice video! I am new to the channel 😀. Cheers
Not as illegal as the children in my basement who I force to practice 10 hours a day so I can create the next polyphia.

Great stuff Mike! Thanks!
why should this be illegal?
Because all good things in life are either illegal, immoral or fattening.
You look like the dad of the nurd Stevie T.
this couldve been a 4 minute video
3 minutes into the video and i have learned nothing.
way too much yapping
lol
Gosh...you talk soooooo much!
