- Edge diameter:
The rim diameter indicates the upper width of the mouthpiece in diameter, from the right to the left side. The inner edge diameter is one of the determining factors for the vibrating part of the lips. As unusual as it sounds, the diameter depends on the frequency range to be played. In return, this means that the diameter of the instruments that cover roughly the same tone range is also roughly the same. To clarify: the tone ranges of the trumpet and tuba only intersect minimally and the inner rim diameter of their mouthpieces of around 16 mm compared to 31 mm speak for themselves.
Edge width:
This value describes the width of the upper edge of the mouthpiece. With regard to the border width, there are player preferences from narrow to wide. In connection with the edge width, the edge contour also plays an important role. Some mouthpieces have a rounded edge, some a very flat one. Depending on the shape of the lips, you have to try several variants at the beginning of your mouthpiece search before you can make a statement about the edge contour that still applies after hours of intensive training.
And what is the inner edge good for?
A sharp inner edge allows for clean, clear inserts, but softer bonds are made difficult. With the rounded edges it is exactly the opposite. But of course, edge shape is not always edge shape, and the difference between round and sharp edges is not everything.
There is:
O flat edges with little broken edges
O curved edges with rounded edges
O round edges with rounded edges.
Edges and margins seem to be related. The rounder the edge, the rounder the edge. The question of the right edge for the individual player must also be answered by him alone.
While all of these points are important, when purchasing a mouthpiece, the focus is on the bowl / funnel.
The width, depth and contour are striking here.
Backbore:
As if that wasn't already confusing enough, after this insight on the graphic we move further into the depths of a mouthpiece, into the blind hole, also known as the soul. The transition from the boiler to the back bore is referred to as the soul. The interplay of soul and backbore is crucial for intonation. The terms narrow, medium, wide, medium narrow refer to the back bore. A standard mouthpiece for the beginner usually has a half-tight bore. But here, too, no ideal values can be specified. Trying it out is the be-all and end-all. The back bore, which can also be seen as the beginning of the conical tube of the instrument, merges into the shaft.

Hallo, wenn man die Mundstücke wechselt denn sind die ja nur mit dem Kegel gehalten. Aber bei dieser großen Varianz der Arten ändert sich da nicht immer auch ein bisschen, der Abstand Ring zum Rohr der Trompete und damit die Gesamtlänge der Trompete und damit auch der Ton- (Tonhöhe-also Frequenz gemeint)? Zumindest im Millimeterbereich?

Hab dank Corona mal Zeit mich mit sowas zu beschäftigen :-) Eine Frage habe ich: Wie beurteilst Du das Wechseln von Mundstücken. z.B. eins für Blasorchester und dann ein anderes für eine Band mit Bläsern (Höhere Einsätze). Würdest Du für jeden Gig das passende Mundstück wählen oder dich für eins entscheiden und das konstant spielen? Zusatzfrage: Wirkt sich der Wechsel von Mundstücken negativ auf den Ansatz aus? Ich habe eine etwas peinliche Frage. Ich erlerne erst seit April - mit sehr viel Freude - das Flügelhornspiel. Nun habe ich immer wieder Problem mit dem Ansatz wg. zu starker Speichelbildung! Oft muss ich schon nach 4 Tönen meinen Mund und den Kessel des Mundstück trocknen, sonst geht gar nix! :-(

Warum unterschlägst Du uns die Info über den Schaft des Breslmair-Mundstücks? Der ist doch ganz entscheidend für den Klang. Ist doch ein gigantischer Unterschied, ob Du einen 66er Schaft nimmst oder einen AL8, nur als Beispiel. Leider wird nur die Randgröße und die Kesselgröße genannt. Meines Wissens wird Breslmair auch eher wie Breeslmair ausgesprochen. Du sprichst immer von Brässlmair, hört sich komisch an ...
