Thanks a lot! You saved my printer! - If somebody is wondering about how to remove the printer's right lid: Open the rear compartment, where you will find three screws. Unfasten the lowest one of these.
This fixed my problem! I just wished you could have included a portion on how to remove the right side cover. Otherwise a life saver. I used a thin alcohol wipe, filled by a little spray of electrical contact cleaner that is safe on plastics. Used a miniature screwdriver with the alcohol wipe to get in between and wipe the sticky residue off. Put it back, works great. I removed the third screw from the top (on the rear of the printer) and pushed in the bottom release tab on the bottom of the right side cover and it came off ok.RUclips is great! Thanx again!
Thank you very much! I was able to fix my LJ1200 jam problem by following your video. Internally, 1200 looks identical to 1300. You saved me at least US$300 for not having to buy a new printer. I did not want to buy a new printer because they limit the print count by putting a chip in the toner cartridges, which also prevents you from buying 3rd party toners. Older printers were built better. Just look at Amazon reviews.
Spot on fix for my "antique" HP Laserjet 1200 (bought 2003) that recently had the paper-feed issue. The sandpaper on the solenoid worked perfectly and the 1200 lives on! Note: First problem ever in 17 plus years. GOLD, Eric, GOLD.
My 1200 has just died, needs a new fuser unit. Probably not economical to repair. I have had this printer since 2001 and printed almost 139,000 sheets. I doubt that the newer printers will last as long.
We have an HP 1300, still going strong. What a great, quality printer. This problem will surely come up sometime, now I know where to find the solution. Thanks for making the video!
Same issue of printing half of the second page and then the printer stops. Followed your instructions and the problem is fixed. Many thanks for the excellent video.
I had the same problem (first page printed okay, second page would print but when picking up 3rd page, would jam). Tried replacing the separation pad and pickup roller, but didn't solve it for me, and then found this video. The "L" arm described in this video was sticking to the solenoid due to presence of something sticky - cleaned it off (both the solenoid and the "L" arm - most was on the solenoid actually), as suggested in the video, and it now works. Had to scrape it off but once removed, the printer is working great again. Thanks for this!
Thanks a lot ! I had a piece of gunk causing solenoid anchor to stick... I have printed 200pages by feeding one by one before I found this video. now I cleaned that and it works like a charm...
Thanks for this great hint! Getting rid of the sticky stuff was not enough for me though -- I had to shorten the relay spring to make the return force stronger. This printer is quite old, but I still have 2 spare toner cartridges to use up, so I'm glad I was able to save it!
Great straightforward video which gets straight to the point. Mine's on 53,000 pages printed and had never missed a beat until it recently started to jam. But your solenoid fix got it working again. I found just cleaning off the sticky gunk was not enough - it still kept jamming. So I used some electrical insulation tape on the contact. That fixed it. I guess the return spring has become too weak and I suspect the gunk is what it left of what would have been a soft pad. Thanks a lot.
Pretty much exactly the same here (on a 1018; location of solenoid is slightly different but otherwise same thing). Removing the gunk (yeah, that probably must have been a soft pad in a distant past) stopped it from sticking mechanically when pressed with a screwdriver, but made it stick _magnetically_ when actuated by the electronics. I used paper instead of electrical tape. 2 Layers of paper resisted the motion too much, but 1 layer did the trick. Finicky little bugger... The solenoid is now loud as heck - maybe should have gone with the tape - but I kinda like it. Klickety-klick on!
This was the 2nd time I had to fix the issue. I followed your instructions and it held for about 18 months. I cleaned it and put it all back together and then the problem was even worse. I took it all apart again and used a dental scraper to get all the gunk off of the tiny rectangle of metal that gets gummed up. (You can identify the tiny rectangle by the mark it makes on the part connected to the spring). Here's something I learned the 3rd time taking it apart and put it back together. I used pliers to break off all of the plastic tabs holding the right, rear and left panels. It all hold together fine with the screws and if this happens again it's a 3 minute fix instead of 15. :)
Thanks Erik - must have had this printer for nearly 20 years. It recently developed the problem of feeding 4 sheets of paper instead of a single sheet, then jamming. I cleaned the contacts with acetone but the problem persisted. Added electrical tape and to prevent sticking, and the HP1300 lives to print another day!
Thx Erik, you are a hero! You saved at least 120 printers from the garbage belt (including mine). I don't know exactly how much CO2 that is but it's definitely a lot!
THANK YOU!!! You're a life saver. Fortunately I had only cleaned the roller pad when I saw your video, so I didn't have to buy anything. It was sticky just like you said. I didn't unscrew it. Just slid a cloth in between with a little rubbing alcohol. Printing 340 pages right now. Get a little panicky during the long pauses, but it's working. 😊
Thank you... Thank you ... Thank you. After several months of frustration and waste of paper (and time), YOU solved my problem. Your solution fixed my problem PERFECTLY! Thank you.
An extra sheet was being collected and jamming. The solenoid was sticky, just as you described! After cleaning with alcohol, all was well. Many thanks!
thanks. I've had my LaserJet 1300N for well over a decade and its been rock solid reliable. it started trying to pickup paper to fast a few days ago and ive been trying to figure it out. this was the fix!
Thanks for the tip. I don't add felt. I pull out the iron mobile part, fixed by the spring. and with alcool, cleaned this part and the other side (solenoid side). I place again the iron mobile part, and it's works again like a charme ! To remove the side part of the printer, you have a screw to take off, behind the printer.
@@softball202, you need to remove the back cover, the lowest top screw on the right back, and then depress the tab at the bottom The front cover (where you replace the toner) also needs to be removed.
This totally worked for me. I couldn't get the screw to come off so I removed the spring instead, cleaned the plate then used a qtip to clean the part that it touches which, you're right, it was gunky and sticky. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this video. It did it. 17 years old printer now works again. It seems on the switch it was a mix of toner dust with grease. First 5 pages worked then it become warm and glues. I cleaned it with kitchen paper.
Thanks for the video. I cleaned and taped the surface of my sticky solenoid and that fixed my 15 year old HP 1300. I tried to clean the sticky surfaces on the solenoid and I couldn't get all of the sticky off of the surface across from the arm using 91% alcohol, so I put some Scotch Tape on sticky surface across from the arm, cut it to size, and now all is well. Another sticky solenoid symptom that I noticed was that when my printer was trying to feed a sheet of paper, it would raise the paper multiple times while it was feeding...when it's only supposed to do that once. Hope this helps.
Great! My old printer is a HP LaserJet1200 series and it seems to be nearly identically to your 1300. Exactly that solenoid was also the problem with my printer. It seems, that is some kind of a adhesive pad inbetween, which changes over the years into a kind of glue. I cleaned both surfaces with some alcohol (german "Spiritus") and the printer works excellent again. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the helpful video! Fixed my problem with jamming as well. Put also some small rolled paper with tape under the arm. Without the paper it was clicking very loud. We will see how long it will last. Wish you all nice printing guys! :)
great video thanks so much! i bought the jam repair kit with the rollers and same issue, i was ready to chuck it but its been a great printer so i thought id do a little more research. my solenoid was sticking just like yours, cleaned and put felt to prevent the stick and its working perfectly now. thanks again
On poles of the solenoid the adhesive tape called has been pasted to reduce noise of the operation. (To not shock office public with a sound of a unsuccessful shot). Degradation of an adhesive tape reminds you of time of service of the favorite printer :) fabric + C2H5OH
Thank you for posting this, I have the exact issue, I've used this printer continuously since college in 2004 and want to keep it going. I was linked from the user Volsimot on the HP support forums.
Awesome, I have a HPLJ 1200 and there was some residue on the solenoid L arm. Fixed thanks. These are good laser printers and I have an old HP JetDirect 300x so mine is networked. Definitely did not want to buy a new laser and will not buy an inkjet.
Hi Eric, Great video, i hope this will do the trick for me aswell. I checked the L-thing (forgot your word for it :) ) and it is sticky, so I will do you recommendation! Thanks, regards, Rins de Bruin
I found a video showing how to replace the fuser which showed how to dismantle it. The video which helped me was ruclips.net/video/40-Cl2gh5VM/видео.html
YAH!!! This worked. but unfortunately I could not find a video or tutorial on HOW to remove the right side cover which I totally destroyed in getting mine off. But problem solved. I used a folder up paper towel and goof off to get the gunky stuff off.
I didn''t take the right side off my printer yet but mine seems to start picking up a second sheet before the first sheet has completed the printing cycle. This jams the system although if I take off the clear top of the printer tray and rest my finger on the paper stack after the first sheet has gone about 1/2 way into the printer, the second sheet will not be picked up and the machine won't jamb. The feed roller seems to be dropping down onto the paper stack earlier than it should. Seems possible that the solenoid sticking would allow that to happen. Correct?
See that black gear? It fell off on mine and there was a little spring that also fell. I have no idea how to put these back the way they are supposed to be. Can anyone help?
FOR ME AFTER IF I print let say 5 pages it print the first page then the next will cause paper jam if i remove that paper again if i print it print the first page then the next will cause paper jam, what is the solution
Thank you Eric for posting the FIX! I'm back up and running with my vintage 2002 1200!! Here's a very useful link to take off the SIDES and BACK of the 1200: www.precisionroller.com/instructions/hp-laserJet-1200-removing-covers/
Hello... I have the multiple pages problems. Watch a video from "IlyushinSPA" here and helped take it apart but not in English. I pulled and cleaned as suggested as it was junked up; however it did not help my problem. I was ready to give up and went back to the video by "IlyushinSPA" and he points to adding tape to the end of the solenoid bracket. It worked! Thank you Erik for the video. This fix worked perfectly on my aging LJ1300 - thank you!!
i tried your fix, it worked great after i cleaned the arm and added a little piece of tape to the where the pad was.
Thank you! Took me a few minutes on how to get that cover off, but your video helped tremendously and my printer is working again.

Thanks a lot for your tutorial; got the same problem. After cleaning the contacts with Benzin the issue was solved. Thanks again for your effort!
I also needed to put 2 layers of electrical tape on the arm after cleaning. Now it releases fast enough - problem solved! Thanks a lot!
Excellent. Thanks a bunch! I've had this problem for 2 or 3 years. Wish I had looked for your good video fix a long time ago.
