- O δρόμος μας έφερε στην Επίδαυρο για να δούμε το Αρχαίο Θέατρο, το μουσείο και το χώρο του Ασκληπιείου.
Σε μια χαράδρα, το 340 π.Χ., ο αρχαίος αρχιτέκτονας Πολύκλειτος ο Νεότερος έκτισε, σύμφωνα με τον Παυσανία, το θέατρο της Επιδαύρου. Από όλα τα αρχαία θέατρα το θέατρο της Επιδαύρου είναι το ωραιότερο και το καλύτερα διατηρημένο. Προορισμένο για τη διασκέδαση των ασθενών έχει χωρητικότητα 13.000 θεατών. Χωρίζεται σε δύο μέρη. Ένα των 21 σειρών καθισμάτων για το λαό και το κάτω, από 34 σειρές καθισμάτων, για τους ιερείς και τους άρχοντες.
Η θαυμάσια ακουστική του, αλλά και η πάρα πολύ καλή κατάσταση στην οποία διατηρείται συντέλεσαν στη δημιουργία του φεστιβάλ Επιδαύρου, θεσμός που έχει ξεκινήσει εδώ και πολλά χρόνια.
Το Ασκληπιείο της Επιδαύρου έγινε το πιο φημισμένο από όλα τα ασκληπιεία της αρχαίας Ελλάδας, εξαιτίας των πολλών και σοβαρών περιπτώσεων που γιατρεύτηκαν εκεί. Σ' αυτό έφταναν από όλη την Ελλάδα, αλλά και από τη λεκάνη της Μεσογείου άρρωστοι, ικέτες της θείας ευσπλαχνίας.
Η έκτασή του ήταν πολύ μεγάλη και διάθετε ξενώνες, γυμναστήριο, στάδιο και το περίφημο, για την ακουστική του, Θέατρο, για την ψυχαγωγία των ανθρώπων.
Μεγάλη σημασία στη θεραπεία των ασθενών φαίνεται ότι είχε και το θαυμάσιο φυσικό περιβάλλον, που ήταν χτισμένο. Η ηρεμία της φύσης, οι απαλές και καθαρές γραμμές των γύρω βουνών, η πλούσια βλάστηση και οι άφθονες πηγές του ασκούσαν, ιδιαίτερα στους ασθενείς από ψυχικές ασθένειες, φοβερή επίδραση με συνέπεια τη βελτίωση της υγείας μαζί με τη βοήθεια των ιερέων τους.
