Bought my first car about a month ago and this is the most helpful video I have ever come across. I have an 82 240d and have come across the same problems fixed in this video. So grateful for this.
Vacuum line is cheap. Frustration, time, and parts you don't need, are expensive! I have been a Mechanic for over 30 years now. Also, not many folks know to use the engine oil dipstick for some lube when at the side of the road!
Great info first time hearing of shifting to low and then drive in order to start in first gear ; I suggest you make a video with all the tips on using the auto transmission ie max speed the transmission will kick down to lower gear and how to do it for example I’m sure there’s more
What if a transmission shifts hard only from 1st to 2nd? Every other gear change is soft and smooth...could this still be vacuum? Or could it be more leaning towards an issue with the solenoid?
On the 81 transmission it most likely be a vacuum issue. I could be a number of things included incorrect hose routing, VCV malfunction, low engine vacuum output, faulty modulator, etc. My manual would help you understand how the system works, how to troubleshoot and repair the problem: mercedessource.com/store/diesel-automatic-transmission-peak-performance-tuning-manual-kent-bergsma
@@Mercedessource 1985 Mercedes 300TD it’s just really loose compared to any other car I’ve driven. Especially when I get up to high speeds. Hard to control.
Please be more specific when you post a question. You will have a better chance of getting it answered. What is the year of your 123? What is the model? Is it a European or U.S. Model. Where are you located?
Hey Kent, your home page is saying you won't ship to europe, is that going to change anytime soon? I'm eager to order the transmission manual for peak performance and the vacuum bible...

I have the same issue in a 190d, the transmission jerks when shifting. It should be quite the same?
So my 81 300d is missing that linkage on top of the valve cover, could that be why mines shifting hard?

Totally Cool!

Nice, 👍.
I have a 97 Mercedes Benz e300d 164k and the rpm stay up there when I’m doing about 45. Is that normal?
When you say stay up what do you mean?
Vanquish Media I imagine he means it's not shifting into the upper gear, even at cruising speed.
Can the same problem be on a w123 200 petrol model? Automatic box
Not as likely. Gas models have a completely different system. If you have vacuum leaks or a bad transmission modulator you will get irractic shifts.

We hope to be shipping again internationally within the next couple of months.
