So to conclude- even with an overwhelming lack of evidence, and much to the contrary, I can state with one million percent certainty that Nessus IS Houston.
There are many references to South american flora and fauna eg. the Capybara. I reckoned that the great river is the Rio de la plata and the city of Nessus is somewhere in Argentina. The climate is too cold and the people are too white for it to be Bolivia. But of course decreased sunlight would lead to people with less melanin to cope with the vitamin D deficiency and other related problems. Also the dying jungles are "to the north" but of course Bolivia is just west of the Amazon rainforest.

Any thoughts on the child Severian whose family is killed and he becomes a very temporary companion? Is this another Severian? A potential indicator that there might be multiples out there, or a reflection of the ‘First Severian’ idea? Is the name more common given the time travel loop. Was he just a random kid unlucky enough to be pulled into the orbit of our Severian? It made me think of Roland and Jake from ‘The Gunslinger’ I was expecting something to come of it but like so much of BOTNS, if it did, I think I missed it.
I thoroughly enjoyed the books and I think Wolf’s prose is outstanding. He also has some incredible ideas. However, I don’t think story has any meaning. It seems like just semi random shit, maybe stream of consciousness that he just force fit together, or maybe it’s purposefully like that (postmodern influence designed to create a story that has an infinite number of interpretations) but it’s definitely shit of the*highest order*.
There is some method to the madness. Wolfe said that the idea came to him by the realization that Jesus was supposedly a carpenter but the only thing he made in the Gospels is a whip. So what if the real Jesus was a torturer and the Gospels were a whitewashing campaign?
@ but Wolf was a Catholic supposedly devout. But even if that was the starting idea for the book, the rest is in my opinion just an interesting well written stream of consciousness.
