This seems to be a common trend in kpop at least for girl bands. Spica was underrated since their debut and in mamy ways still is. Lush, Supearls and kiss&cry are other recent examples. It seems easier for strong vocalists or singers who that something a kind of quality to their voice, to go solo. For instance Lee Hi, Ailee, IU, Lee Michelle(although her situation is a little different), Baek Ji Young, Youhna (not the one girls generation) Lyn and Gummy just name a few. From what I heard, read and observed over the years companies tend to have one or two lead vocalist per girl group. Of course this should be the case. I personally feel if they truly invested their voices instead of focusing so much on their image or the male gaze most groups have potential so have tight harmonies like The Grace and probably won't struggle vocally when singing diffent genres.
