Unlike other comedy reliefs, he's actually good smart and nice and selfless. When he's funny its funny when he's serious its serious.

I love how a lot of these scenes are from season 3, it really shows his character development and I love that a lot of serious scenes are about his family like about his dad or mom or when he’s making sure Katara’s ok, we love Sokka

The only guys who get a free pass for being this weak are Zuko and Iroh: uncle Iroh was right in supposing that them killing the firelord would throw even more chaos into the world.
True; I can give some of them passes, in specific situations, but when your opponent is a dangerous adversary, who can and will try to kill you in turn, and you can't defeat them permanently without killing them?
You kill them. Azula should have died during the invasion, and it is a gross undersight that they were willing to kill the Fire Lord and they didn't kill his homicidal daughter.

The very reason he's funny is because he's always serious whenever the need of it is there. If he was goofing off when he shouldn't, he wouldn't be funny at all.
