    What people need in African is clean drinking water. They can get light from a basic wood fire. You mean it did not take you four years and $800,000 to come up with the Gravity light 3.0. Love the video. Thanks

    • @EdwinWiles
      @EdwinWiles 7 лет назад +8

      Chris Powell People need many things. The Gravity Light people make no claim that this is all they need. But your comment that people can get light from a simple wood fire shows that you haven't really looked at the need for light, or the consequences of depending on kerosene, or the general lack of firewood. I'd like to challenge you to do the following: for one week, gather enough firewood to produce enough light that you can sit at a table and study some totally new subject, after dark, without any other light source, for a minimum of 4 hours every night, spending no more than US$ 1 per night. When the majority of the 'trees' in your area are no more than low scrubby bushes, and all your neighbors are doing the same, you'll soon find you're spending most of your time gathering wood, with no time left to earn a living.

      It wasn't really a debate comment.

      Chris Powell Well then, you've learned something new! Make a public statement, and you'd better expect a debate! :-)

      Where wood is used for cooking etc it's usually rather quickly depleted, making people travel further and further to gather wood. Deforestation also opens up for soil erosion.
      But at least the water situation is well in hand with the Waterseer and the self filling water bottle projects
      For anyone interested just do a search on youtube for 'thunderfoot waterseer' or 'thunderfoot waterbottle'

      The Ghana West Africa Missions has a water well project that I've collected money for since I was 9 and is largely responsible for the elimination of the guinne worm which was an epidemic. In one of the villages I visited UNICEF donated a solar field that powered a pump directly that took water from a bore hole, pushed it over a mile and could fill 4 1000 liter towers from empty to full in 6 hours of daylight. Electricity is important in some areas but I agree $800 grand would be much better spent on water. Besides have you looked at the price for these things? They are for sale for $80 each.

    TBH i think alot of the development time went in to taking a cobbled together proof of concept like you made here, and cramming it in that little package and giving it a 20 minute run time. You gotta admit, its a pretty well engineered product.

  • @step4560
    @step4560 7 лет назад +2

    Love it! I haven't researched the company, but after building yours, which is fantastic, you can also appreciate the potential time frame for optimization, tooling, low cost manufacturability etc. so that it's a workable product for the underprivileged. I know your point is not to diminish that particular company or project, but to just be careful and don't get scammed, for there definitely are some out there...

      MrLiberty888...I'm not so sure about that. Look at Osama Obama Hitler Hussein...he not only got elected, but got elected twice! Killary supporters were threatening to leave, kill themselves, & all kinds of stupidity & still ranting. None of which followed through, but exposing bullshit doesn't always stop stupidity from prevailing. It does help change the few with a little sense...hahaha. Just a thought, but the Post- Apocalyptic Garage bros need to join forces n fighters of stupidity! They come up with some kool shit.

    Right now, poor Austrian lumberjack brothers are working throughout the darkest of nights with only the stars to light their way, risking life and limb to bring lumber and firewood to those in desperate need. You can help them now. By simply donating a few dollars/Euros to provide them with the Gravity Light 3.0, you can help prevent tragedy by bringing much needed light wherever and whenever they are working in the woods. Contribute now, before Hannes saws off a leg because he couldn't see the chainsaw blade, or Bernd hacks off a foot because he couldn't see where the axe would fall. Act now, before it's too late. Open up your hearts. Open up your wallets. Be the light of their lives. Do it for the children. Do it for Africa.

    Bookmarking note--This was already done, in total, and by a much less easily upset guy under the title "Gravity Light (v2) Making and Enhancements" (with no connection to the $400,000 pair who later converted their factory to a factory manufacturing fossil fuel-burning stoves). This fellow got 12 minutes of light from his setup and linked to the math involved and the simple circuit he created (to smooth out the quality of light), for the benefit of others interested in improving his design.
    What's interesting _here_ is using the (exposed) pulley system to control the weight's fall rather than relying more on friction, a pulley system which can be incorporated into the body of the device and combined with friction to optimize duration and output. To be direct, it's not difficult to reproduce the crude techniques required to generate light from a falling weight and pulley or gear system---it's significantly harder to refine everything into something that works _well_ (rather than, say, flickers and wobbles), that can be mass-produced _cheaply,_ that's lightweight enough to be shipped, that can be used in a house, that someone will want to use in their living room or kitchen or workshop, and is at the least an adequate substitute for kerosene lighting.

    Not all the money from the indygogo is going towards research though is it. If you back the project $50 they send you a gravity light, so i suspect a lot of that 400 grand was donated y people who also wanted one for themselves.

    Now make it last 25minutes per lift, make it field reparable, and fit in your hand. Not to mention you can probably start mass production of it or free somehow.
    The creators never seem to say it's new tech just refined into something worthwhile. Like cellphones, it's just radios and transistors, 100 year old tech turned into something worthwhile.

      the idea is more then 2000 old!!! Archimedes in ancient Greece, had made a clock powered with water , and may be others before him make different idea that we do not know because , no one write about it !! I agree with you altaccout , and I was skeptic about this and may be was a scam ... so PostapocalypticGarage may be have a point for all the scam project out there , because many scams is out there , with kickstarter and indgogo that not work... or do not do what they telling about!!
      but this gravity light , I see from other videos and other people on youtube , that actually work and they did what they said that they will do!! and give to some people a job in Africa that make this and assembly , and give to people that really need it the product for free... So some times you never know if some on tell you the truth from the start ... plus is a cool elegant product to have in your survive bug and use it on camping or survive mode... Not all people can be handy , not all people can have the tools to make this , last very long , and is very easy to repair if you have the spear parts ...
      Lets say that some one donate solar power for this villages , and solar power cleaning water , will need repair that cost and need knowledge , this will be a good coal , but the greedy money people do not care for something like this!! or even the governments they have in Africa ... but this will be better to see there... autonomous villages , the solar panel is now 350 watts and will go to 500 watt... so imagine what will happen if you have a 1000watt panel , at the same price and same dimensions ...not only for Africa but for the all planet!! not all the house but too many can be autonomous at 70 to 80% of the year or more , if you can storage more energy in your batteries, that will last 8 to 15 years of use.... and will way cost , half the price that cost today...

    Unless the proceeds from selling these are going directly to charity, or toward paying for free gravity lights for African families, I am inclined to agree that this is a standard charity scam. Not sure the legality; I would have to read their website and promises further and see if they had violated any patents as well (likely). If it were based in the U.S.A. I would look into it further and see what about dealing with it; but they appear to be German.

    Yes, you are right about the product is really easy to build. But maybe because now it has been already built by someone and when other try to built after that and find it basic, naturally we think why are we giving money to them for something so basic which anybody can do.
    Like the number zero. For us it is obvious that if we have nothing means we have zero things but when zero was not invented it was hard to say something if we have nothing.
    I don't know if you were joking the whole time but to me it looked you were not, I mean you were but you were against the project.
    Your version looks really good btw. Loved it.

    Practical curiosity question: about how much light time does one setup of the contraption provide? In other words, how long til you have to reset the pulley?

    After learning about those Gravity Light funding campaigns, I have a suggestion for you.
    You should start a Research and Development fund raiser for a USB Powered Bull Manure Detector. The tricky part will be designing The Interweb Interface, which will require initial funding of $777,000 USD. This does not include cost of private jet rental for attending conventions in Monaco, Aruba and Hawaii.

    Why use pulleys? When you can just put lighter weight instead

    • @MoxyVibe
      @MoxyVibe 4 года назад

      Gravitational energy is equal to mass x gravity x the change in height between two points. He can't change gravity constant and the change in height will likely be much harder to achieve design wise, so changing the mass is a much simpler solution to get more energy out of the system. As for the pulleys I don't know much about pulleys but the advantage of multiple pulleys is that the force needed to lift heavier objects requires less force but the payoff is that you have to sustain that force longer and over more rope length, so perhaps this disadvantage is used as an advantage to make the object fall longer than it would have. It would still have the same amount of energy though regardless of time spent falling.

      @@MoxyVibe yes I know you need more weights to get more energy but when using pulleys the tension caused by the weights are divided to each string thus also dividing the total weight... so if you put 40lbs with 4 strings compound pulley the total weight will be in the system is 10lbs... so why not remove the pulley and only use 10lbs... the only advantage of pulley is bringing heavy weight up since like what I said instead pulling 40lbs it will be divided into how many strings example 4 strings so it would be pulling 10lbs... but in this video you can just simply reach that height no need for pulleys

      I believe you are mixing up the definition of weight and mass. The system has a discrete mass value but the weight value is dependent on the force’s acting on that mass
      For example your mass is pretty much the same all throughout the universe but your weight will change with different gravity fields or forces acting on it.
      Yes you are right that the force is being distributed across the string but remember that gravitational potential energy is dependent only on the change in height the gravitational constant of earth and mass of the object. As a result a 10lb object will not have the same amount of energy as a 40lb object in the same change in height.it’s usually easier to refer to this kinda stuff in the metric system since weight is basically two variables or more depending on the forces acting on the object

      @@MoxyVibe yes I know the difference between the two... it is only called weight when gravity is involved... it is almost the same thing when using the word mass because mass means how many protons, electrons, neutrons in total of that thing but when you want to find the mass you can simply put it on a scale and voila you can have unit of grams, kilograms, etc.... but when you measure the mass you are also measuring the weight since there is a gravitational force applied when you put the "thing" on the scale... so regardless the mass and weight "definitions" what I really want to say on the vid is that when using pulleys you are dividing the force or tension on that object across the number of strings... so if that pulley system uses 50kg of mass and have 5 strings so the force created will be from 10kg... so why not remove the pulley system and directly put 10kg? You will have same amount of energy from 50kg with 5 strings pulley system and the 10kg without pulleys... the only advantage of using pulleys is when lifting up heavy objects because the total force or energy or tension created of that heavy weight will be divided across the number of strings

      @@kronosdarkangel5290 I don't believe that you are actually dividing the force over a pulley rather the input force is doubled tripled or however many strings that pulley system may have so if you have a pulley system you can lift an object that should need lets say 750Newtons and you have three strings contributing to the lifting of the object, instead of needing 750newtons you only need 250N(input force) because the other parts of the string will feel a tension of 250 newtons and add on to your 250N giving an output of 750N
      If you remove the pulley system I believe the system will fall to fast the strings have forces on them counteracting the force of gravity. However the potential energy of the system will stay about the same(disregarding the mass of the pulley and friction). That energy is transferred to a dc or ac motor which by providing mechanical energy (spinning the motor ) will cause current to flow and the connected LEDs will get lit up as a result.

    ROFLMFAO! Eureka! I've found my Guru. Unfortunately for you, Hans, I don't have any money, but I wish you well. You could be a "fairly dangerous man." Stanley Meyers built a "HHO" device.- splitting water molecules using vibration and bleeding off the Hydrogen to be used as fuel. After visiting the "Pentagon," he died of food poisoning the next day. A week ago another guy on a Greek island re-invented a quite similar device. COVERED on MAIN STREAM MEDIA for about 5 minutes, then..."White Silence." Not another sound about it. Kinda like those two Australian Guys with their "over-unity device," or whatever, or the Japanese automobile Company that PRODUCED hundreds of cars that used water as fuel. They even made a TV commercial describing their product. You guessed it! It and they disappeared into the ether. SO, after you re-invent this idea, use your LRRP skills to hide (along with the prototype)in the Mountains like a gutter-snipe, and make them come find you, lol. Also, you could make your own whiskey! The money you save on sour mash, you can spend on sweet girls! Hail Grid-less Guru. more later
