The astronaut concept was derived from the story of the astronaut who spent 48 minutes in his spaceship and coming back saying that those 48 minutes were the longest and most loneliest of mankind. The combination of these two concepts placed within the MV discusses being away from home, being somewhere unfamiliar(since the whale and astronaut is in space) and being isolated. Isolation was one of the themes in the mv. The song and the MV seems to talk about how everyone, in their lifetime, would meet a low point where they feel most isolated and most out of their place, but that this song (and EXO) will be there to warm their hearts. Also there is another Concept inspired from "PLUTO" & and it's satellite "CHARON". CHARON has a dark splotch (like a Whale) and the heart-shaped area on is found on "PLUTO". In the first part, you can see the members being happily together, then it showed how they disappeared one by one. When Kai appeared alone in the bedroom, I knew it's him reminiscing that past. Kai witnessed the members fight and disappear one by one, so him smashing the mirror is because he's mad that he didn't do anything about it. Kai is full of regret and loneliness. When he ran towards the car, there's a whale behind him because he represents a lonely whale. In theory, a "lonely whale" is a lone whale in the ocean that sings to call for likeliness (whales are known to "sing" as a form of communication). Like a lonely whale, Kai felt alone after losing people in his life. The video then showed the happy moments again and the whale seeing an astronaut. Kai running "back" towards the car is a way to show how he realized how important those moments were. What does this tell us? Always treasure everyone who is around you and with you because no matter how cliche it may sound, you never know what you have until it's gone. You may experience obstacles together along the way, but never give up on these people because "no one is truly alone in this world" - which is shown by the whale finding an astronaut scene. basically what happened is that this entire song is about lost friendship. it seems as though something has happened to jongin, possibly that he died, because he is the only connection between the members. this is seen when he catches the ball that minseok threw, how his moves mirror chanyeol and suho's fight, his running towards kyungsoo's car, and the whale appearing behind him. the members blame themselves for whatever happened to jongin and therefore, live in the past (all the members disappearing), and don't meet again. sehun is the one who is most affected by this because of how alone he is out in space, and the symbolism of the lonely 52 hertz baleen whale. in the end, the members start to forgive themselves and the past becomes the present once again. this is also shown by how sehun meets the whale at last. the song is really sad, but it intends to give hope for something better.

In the first part, you can see the members being happily together, then it showed how they disappeared one by one. When Kai appeared alone in the bedroom, I knew it's him reminiscing that past. Kai witnessed the members fight and disappear one by one, so him smashing the mirror is because he's mad that he didn't do anything about it. Kai is full of regret and loneliness. When he ran towards the car, there's a whale behind him because he represents a lonely whale. In theory, a "lonely whale" is a lone whale in the ocean that sings to call for likeliness (whales are known to "sing" as a form of communication). Like a lonely whale, Kai felt alone after losing people in his life. The video then showed the happy moments again and the whale seeing an astronaut. Kai running "back" towards the car is a way to show how he realized how important those moments were. What does this tell us? Always treasure everyone who is around you and with you because no matter how cliche it may sound, you never know what you have until it's gone. You may experience obstacles together along the way, but never give up on these people because "no one is truly alone in this world" - which is shown by the whale finding an astronaut scene.
So how is it related to the song? "Sing For You" is about a person courageously confessing things he normally wouldn't say to the person he loves and treasures. So basically, both the music video and the song are trying to convey the same message - know how to treasure all your loved ones, know how to value them.
PS. Why the space? Well, "space whale" is apparently a thing. It's a sci-fi myth related to the space being referred to as an ocean. They probably incorporated the real lonely whale theory to the space whale myth because it fits Exo's concept. The whole thing isn't totally random like you all think.

in the end where kai ran td.o who was driving aimlessly there's whale in the background. sehun in spacesuit comforting the lone whale. so in reality it was us(exo-L) who witnessed exo's hardships and stayed with them. exo were having problems but at the same time comforted us by singing for us.

I think it has to do with a poem called the astronaut's whale. it is about a whale who feels lonely and an astronaut. they become friends and go to space. then after the whale's exitement about being in space runs down and starts feeling sad and lonely the astronaut helps him understand that he probably feels homesick and that he belongs in the sea. they part ways but remain friends in the end.

this is really a very sad song there is actually a very deep meaning behind the mv
the astronaut and the whale symbolize loneliness (the whale is alice, the loneliest whale in the world)
so basically it talks about all difficulties that exo have overcome :'(
basically what happened is that this entire song is about lost friendship. it seems as though something has happened to jongin, possibly that he died, because he is the only connection between the members. this is seen when he catches the ball that minseok threw, how his moves mirror chanyeol and suho's fight, his running towards kyungsoo's car, and the whale appearing behind him. the members blame themselves for whatever happened to jongin and therefore, live in the past (all the members disappearing), and don't meet again. sehun is the one who is most affected by this because of how alone he is out in space, and the symbolism of the lonely 52 hertz baleen whale. in the end, the members start to forgive themselves and the past becomes the present once again. this is also shown by how sehun meets the whale at last. the song is really sad, but it intends to give hope for something better.

I think the theme is that they are always together, so if someone is gone, not there anymore, they become sad. I feel like this is more for the member who have left. Its a song to tell the three member how they felt. Last christmas, they were all together, now those three are gone. Its never the same anymore.

it's about Kris, Tao, and Luhan leaving, the scenes where chanyeol and suho where fighting was suho was blaming himself for those 3 members leaving, and chanyeol tried to tell him it wasn't his fault, suho out of anger hit chanyeol and chanyeol in sadness tried to snap suho out of it by hitting him, kai was alone because he felt that nobody liked him anymore he thought he was alone, and when you said he was "dancing his emotions off" it was actually him taking hits from things he thought where true, such as fans hating him, sehun was in space because he's been feeling alone as well, the whale represents the fans, so sehun won't be lonely anymore, kai running towards the car was he wanted to be seen he wanted to be noticed. Exo said they where sorry, they didn't want Exo-L to be sad. I even cried yesterday while watching the video.
