How The Right Almost Killed This Local Hellman With a 3-Wave Beatdown | SURFER Magazine

  • Western Australia’s infamous slab, The Right, did its strangely beautiful-yet-terrifying dance last weekend, which allured a crew of slab-hunting madmen to tango with the heavy, shape-shifting beast. Among the chargers were Bradley Norris and Jake Osman, who decided to whip into one of the session’s larger waves as doubles-Osman out front, Norris deep with a housed camera.
    One second Norris was behind Osman, snapping photos of the amazing view inside the tube, with a wide-open exit for both in sight. The next he was bucked from his board and slammed straight into the bottom -where he was held for two more waves before resurfacing, nearly dead.
    Norris gave a play-by-play of his harrowing wipeout on The Grin Reapers Podcast, which serves as the audio to the footage of the incident above.

    When i passed out from not being able to hold on any longer I felt very peaceful too! (Jakes Point, Western Australia), I also felt VERY peaceful, which surprised me as up until then, i thought drowning would be a terrifying way to go!...but it's not 😊).

      The desperation to breath only reaches certain level, at one point it stops and you begin to feel sleepy, dizzy , you just accept the situation, and say what the hell , drowning isn’t that bad, and next thing your head is out and someone rescues you, or the set has finished ( my case).
      I had 6 , 20 foot waves hitting me in the face. Of course they were smaller once I had pass the 4 th one.
      But still, when it finished I lay in my surfboard for 10 minutes , paddle back , caught a medium size wave,
      I just wanted to surf something before quitting the day.
      I didn’t wipped out before the set hit me , if that would’ve been the case , I don’t want to imagine the outcome

    Big wave surfers need to start doing some deadlifts to deal with the pressure of the impacts they deal with. Waves like this are too rare to train for using just surfing and cardio.

    • @letshaveya
      @letshaveya 6 лет назад

      Some big wave surfers do alot of underwater breath holding in pools, some have trained to hold their breath for up to 5 mins in a calm water, would be less being thrashed around in the ocean but enough to survive being dumped by waves this size with the equipement they use.

      Cheers for the reply. Isn't the bends caused by rate of ascent, so if they took a few puffs of oxygen and took their time getting to the surface, and breathing out excess oxygen gradually they would be ok? Better than drowning. I am not a biologist-doctor-or diver-so if any biologist-doctor-divers out there, would be good to know!

    • @girabaldytasty6224
      @girabaldytasty6224 6 лет назад +8

      @@sV3Z1 idk exactly but it has to do with the pressure of the air. When you breathe the air from the surface and bring it down the air at the surface is at a different pressure than air you bring down with you. If you hold your breath while breathing air from a tank, and a wave or swell goes over your head the depth and water pressure changes causing the air in your lungs and blood to expand witch does something too you.

    I had an out of body experience about 6’-8’ underwater. I dropped in and got slammed into the bottom. Suddenly I saw this body floating up and thought to myself, wow that guys fucked up. I watched the body float up slowly as the wetsuits buoyancy made it rise towards the surface. Moments later I was no longer watching the body but was suddenly back inside. As I continued floating up I realized they I was paralyzed and thought to myself “wow I’m fucked up” but now the real fight is on because I’ll end up hitting the surface face down and I have to prevent myself from drowning. Many things had to fall into place after that for me to survive and very luckily they all did. Life is good..!!

That 3 wave hold down is damn terrifying when you hit bottom to not move forever in pitch black, when you're coming up to get held again right when you start to see some color in the water to get oriented upright, and almost back to the top when you start sucking in sea foam that's over your head... I quit, gave up on mine... The interval was shit.

I was getting pounded and I didn’t know whether to try to undo my legroom or try to pull it over my head. And I went into an strange calm relaxed mode like I accepted I was going to drown. Then the fight came back and went for the leg tie again and finally got it off and managed to swim clear of the impact zone. Freak accident but I swear it nearly cost me.

      @@joshhug2578 That was in 1990. Two of us three were pounded for an hour once we mustered the courage to move into the crash zone, testing the strength of our arms and leashes/plugs. That size wave pushes you deep and fills the upper water column with a lot of air so it takes a good 20 seconds for buoyancy to return. On one of the dunkings I recall hugging my board as tightly as I could, getting slammed and wrangled as it pushed me deep under water, losing my grip the board disappeared for several seconds then yanked and pulled at my ankle for a good ten seconds. Knowing which way was up I rushed to the surface, hyperventillating to replenish while remounting my board in the same grip of death I used countless times that day. I knew I wasn't going to die once the board stopped getting ripped from my grip on the inside.
      One of my friends caught and rode a wave that day, maybe two. We had another friend who stayed on the beach with a camera and actually captured a photo of it, my tiny friend on that monster wave at least 10 times his height. The friend who rode the wave was named John Nordloff. I don't know if he's alive now. He dropped out of high school and became homeless. The last I saw him my head hung low because I was struggling myself and couldn't take him in. He was a legend... we all were.

    You seriously need to change up the title. I thought this was going to be like an alt-right beat down of a surfer, not a friggin' wave. I was expecting skin heads and Doc Martins laced up in white or red laces (old school) beating down a long haired hippy surfer. Hahahaha

    If you want the same sensation on snow, ski down a crevasse head first, then climb your way out. Been there; done that. But big waves holding you down while trashing your body in a wild rock tumbler ... was more scary for me.
