- Western Australia’s infamous slab, The Right, did its strangely beautiful-yet-terrifying dance last weekend, which allured a crew of slab-hunting madmen to tango with the heavy, shape-shifting beast. Among the chargers were Bradley Norris and Jake Osman, who decided to whip into one of the session’s larger waves as doubles-Osman out front, Norris deep with a housed camera.
One second Norris was behind Osman, snapping photos of the amazing view inside the tube, with a wide-open exit for both in sight. The next he was bucked from his board and slammed straight into the bottom -where he was held for two more waves before resurfacing, nearly dead.
Norris gave a play-by-play of his harrowing wipeout on The Grin Reapers Podcast, which serves as the audio to the footage of the incident above.
this man put himself on the line to get us keyboarder fattys those epic photos. get him a beer
A tinny mate. A tinny!
Nah to lazy will drink a beer for him lol
The Surf Rat
Get the man a case..!!!
Ok
He is doing it to get paid...
Stop acting all humble and just admit it.... Your nutz were holding you down. 😁🌊🏄
Funny
Good one ;D
I went over the falls on a 8 footer and thought I was gonna die ha!
I got a 3 footer on my head and I thought I was going to die
@@jesusmerkel I cannot imagine multiple wave hold downs. Getting smashed by one wave is bad enough.
@@jesusmerkel Jesus mate that's heavy
The thumbnail pic which brought me to this video is amazing. I don't surf but love taking pictures of waves. Having someone riding the wave just compliments the moment taking the picture to another level.
Wow.that there must be one of the gnarliest wipeouts.
As a WA local I can advise there are some lovely wineries down near Walpole. I would recommend going to some of them instead of this utter insanity!!!
“I could feel my brain starting to switch off. I was super relaxed.”
- Pure Legend
Pray to him, he risked his life to make a nice video os his mate
You lived, so that insane shot was worth it, crazy one aren't you, thanks for the awesome story behind it.
How did you not drop the camera? Probably borrowed it from Clark Little and thought " he's really gonna lose his shit if I drop it" 🍩+🎥=🏁
Jetty1502 lose..
Jetty1502 know.
God damned.
nope. goddamn
Awesome
I fell off the falls once while trying to paddle over a 12 footer, it broke my sternum and I thought I was gonna die, I can’t imagine this
Thanks for fading me into oblivion bro.
I see 39 thumbs down over there. I guess those people can't be impressed unless the person falls from outer space and lands on the board while racing down the face of a wave.
RESPECT!!! unreal bro -glad you made it - shooooowweeeeeee...heavy !!!
Zack Kay and sV3Z1, I think those small cannisters are available, strapped to the front of your vest. As you say you can't hold your breath but it must give the surfer a certian amount of breaths. I have only seen photos of them, I don't know if they are widely used, mabye they are dangerous.
Gnarly brother! Awesome video! #ilyBb sacrificing it all for the shot!
People still say gnarly???
The photo of the wave is good even when taken from the beach without a human in danger. Take care and best of luck!
I put a like in your video however for admitting that you were scared enough. Hopefully others won’t try! :-)
those photos are insane
Glad you are ok mate, stay safe 🤙
Possibly the heaviest wave in the world. Epic.
You'd never see this Florida surfer even paddle out to that monster.
Is it ok to go out on my longboard?
I'll meet you on my softy!!!
So...was the dude being photographed somehow responsible for the cameraman going down?
I know the feeling..I slipped in the bathtube..got knocked out and came around just in time.
I went surfing with my buddy who is a pro and was pinned for 45 seconds to the ocean floor. I read on the beach for the rest of the trip.
Wow, a lot of people mention that peaceful feeling. Anyone out there, drowned and recovered who _didn't_ feel peaceful?
When i passed out from not being able to hold on any longer I felt very peaceful too! (Jakes Point, Western Australia), I also felt VERY peaceful, which surprised me as up until then, i thought drowning would be a terrifying way to go!...but it's not 😊).
Paxus
The desperation to breath only reaches certain level, at one point it stops and you begin to feel sleepy, dizzy , you just accept the situation, and say what the hell , drowning isn’t that bad, and next thing your head is out and someone rescues you, or the set has finished ( my case).
I had 6 , 20 foot waves hitting me in the face. Of course they were smaller once I had pass the 4 th one.
But still, when it finished I lay in my surfboard for 10 minutes , paddle back , caught a medium size wave,
I just wanted to surf something before quitting the day.
I didn’t wipped out before the set hit me , if that would’ve been the case , I don’t want to imagine the outcome
Just holding my breath listening to that..
Big wave surfers need to start doing some deadlifts to deal with the pressure of the impacts they deal with. Waves like this are too rare to train for using just surfing and cardio.
Some big wave surfers do alot of underwater breath holding in pools, some have trained to hold their breath for up to 5 mins in a calm water, would be less being thrashed around in the ocean but enough to survive being dumped by waves this size with the equipement they use.
That's hard core dude...been there and it aint nice..
More of these please 😸🙏🙏🎉
Very Cool Thumbnail
The Right makes Teauhupo'o look like Kelly Slater's wave pool on the lowest setting.
I would have been mad at his friend who faded to deep and caused him to be in a bad spot.
respects what a blast...
Nice video
Balls 🤯
5:55 the scar??
I got close once, i think as we get older we don't realize how easy it is to pass out and drown.
Dude’s a beast
Drop In Claimed!
that shot does look awesome though worth heh
Brutal
Did he get pitted?
That was so ganster
Jeezaz.
Oz Right!?🤙
awesome guy
Is that the box?
No
Why can't they attach a small pressurized air canister on their vests in case this happens, enough for two or three breaths, making it safer? Surely they've thought about it, would cost much, isn't heavy...etc. What are the problems with this idea?
Would get the benz coming up from such depth if u got an extra breath under water
When you bring air down with you you can't hold your breath. When your scuba diving you can't hold your breath.
Cheers for the reply. Isn't the bends caused by rate of ascent, so if they took a few puffs of oxygen and took their time getting to the surface, and breathing out excess oxygen gradually they would be ok? Better than drowning. I am not a biologist-doctor-or diver-so if any biologist-doctor-divers out there, would be good to know!
@@sV3Z1 idk exactly but it has to do with the pressure of the air. When you breathe the air from the surface and bring it down the air at the surface is at a different pressure than air you bring down with you. If you hold your breath while breathing air from a tank, and a wave or swell goes over your head the depth and water pressure changes causing the air in your lungs and blood to expand witch does something too you.
Cheers- will check out the bends on wikipedia!
Do it without the jetskis and vests and youll be as brave as a lot of guys that go it alone paddle in and nobody knows if you die . Wank on wankers . Circle jerk all you want but there are hard men everywhere that have none of that and walk down the beach back to get into their work gear and go to their job.
I thought this wave was called cyclops
Canisters? Wtf
If your interested, and actually do surf waves like this, i can educate you ,lol
So they float
In case you think what you do is dangerous.
Oi mate
Dude almost died👍🏽🤣
3 foot wave? That way was jacked!
Hehveee
Bloody dead set legend you are mate. Onya.
I would love to watch this with my young boys, but geez the F-bombs we flyin'. Surfer...bleep that stuff, yeah...
Meh,Crossy just does it & doesn't talk it up win or lose.Couldn't pump the dislike button quick enough.
Nothing says good times like “I just died in my head.” 😬
I always thought I was a little twisted for thinking this way!! But any surfer dreads this!
I'VE A FEW OF THOSE!
" but I got the shot "
I had an out of body experience about 6’-8’ underwater. I dropped in and got slammed into the bottom. Suddenly I saw this body floating up and thought to myself, wow that guys fucked up. I watched the body float up slowly as the wetsuits buoyancy made it rise towards the surface. Moments later I was no longer watching the body but was suddenly back inside. As I continued floating up I realized they I was paralyzed and thought to myself “wow I’m fucked up” but now the real fight is on because I’ll end up hitting the surface face down and I have to prevent myself from drowning. Many things had to fall into place after that for me to survive and very luckily they all did. Life is good..!!
Congrats on surviving. I know the feeling. I came close once. I remember it like it happened today. It happened in 1977 . I was 20. 3 wave hold down. It's something that you'll never forget. Your wave is far more insane.
do you think anyones ever actually died from holddowns?
El Astronaute yeah it happens all the time in places like these
@Kaden Horning I just thought it was usually because something happened like they hit their heads or go unconscious or something like that, not actually suffocating
@@elastronaute1198 well you thought wrong
@@mariopsota5806 name surfer that died from a hold down then
Forgot to breathe mi-FAAAKN-self watching this!
Thats why i stay in the carpark.
Carpark... Interesting choice of words
@@RedLineShortFilms I reckon phonetically it would sound like, "KAA-PAAAK"
A. X that’s exactly how I read it. “That’s wua ah stayy in tha kaa paak”
I live in Australia. Its what we call places where cars are parked. You know different countries use different words for things right? The universe doesn't revolve around America.
@SuperGoldnut I meant the other two , not you.
that cam water mount should have two cams on it one in front and back. that cam guy was balls deep in it id rather see the footage of him. much respect. nuts.
Someone hand this guy his Man Card! Certified, licensed and bonded 👏👏👏
God bless you big wave guys. Solid 8ft faces in Newport Beach river jetties nearly drowned me and tried putting me straight into the jetty on 44th st. Those currents on straight south, big for California swells are crazy. Definitely wasn’t in good enough waterman shape to be out there on a 7’6” that I struggle to successfully duck dive. Just grateful I made it out. Thank God ❤️🤙✝️ Certainly humbled me and will think twice when in doubt next time
THe camera survived?
Well obviously, it showed the shot.
Hell no, I don't like the feeling of a hold down on the ocean floor! That 3 wave hold down is damn terrifying when you hit bottom to not move forever in pitch black, when you're coming up to get held again right when you start to see some color in the water to get oriented upright, and almost back to the top when you start sucking in sea foam that's over your head... I quit, gave up on mine... The interval was shit.
Don't like to hear about it at all... Bad things come in 2s and hell is coming in 3s!
Had an experience similar in 10’ surf and managed to wipe out and wrap my leg rope around my neck so that I was try to float bum up upside down with my board trying to strangle me. I was getting pounded and I didn’t know whether to try to undo my legroom or try to pull it over my head. And I went into an strange calm relaxed mode like I accepted I was going to drown. Then the fight came back and went for the leg tie again and finally got it off and managed to swim clear of the impact zone. Freak accident but I swear it nearly cost me.
Its true, positivity wins the day. If you want to stay alive, live in an attitude of gratitude, the fact this guy just relaxed and believed in positivity ( sometimes you have to align with love with prayer, im not religious - maybe spiritual) but yeah align with positivity.

Not a 3 wave hold down... It's called being held down by 3 mutant beasts! But hey he survived and we got some sick footage to enjoy 🍻
Same thing happened to me.... 3-4 (ft) Hole in the Wall, Lancelin. 1994.
No canisters to save my life. Btw....
good break
You can imagine how we would get to the spot when there were no drones, jet skis, .... Nazaré/Portugal. Back in the day
This guy had balls of steel, hell he suffered
Tell us another story grandpa
Taking it to another level to get some f#ckin epic footage . . You are either unwell upstairs or just simply unwell.
💀💀💀💀
Great picture bro...
RESPECT....
I see it differently. It's when these guys r on the edge they feel mostly alive. In life we have hunters and gatherers. We need a new category for these boys.
It aint about the size... i had a 3 wave hold down on a 6ft day and barely made it out alive. Most important thing is to be still and calm. Dont waste energy/ oxygen you will know its ready to let you out of its grip.
The mindset you need to survive an experience like this. Unreal.
wow!! i don't know how you guy's do this stuff!! getting smashed by a six footer is scary enough!! you guy's are supermen!!😎😎
Ozzy man reviews?
Pacific Dynamic Builders Destination fucked.
Ducati Drew 😂😂😂
@@ApriliaRacer14 lolololol
Ryan hipwoods hold down was more insane than that he tells it on gypsy tales podcast
I had that feeling as a dumb kid. 2 friends and I paddled out at humboldt bay's north jetty on a 35'+ day. We're lucky to be alive. No vests. No jetskis. Just resting heart rates of 40 and dumb luck. Everything after that is bonus life. At least I think I'm alive.
Id love to hear the rest of that story! How long ago was that?
@@joshhug2578 That was in 1990. Two of us three were pounded for an hour once we mustered the courage to move into the crash zone, testing the strength of our arms and leashes/plugs. That size wave pushes you deep and fills the upper water column with a lot of air so it takes a good 20 seconds for buoyancy to return. On one of the dunkings I recall hugging my board as tightly as I could, getting slammed and wrangled as it pushed me deep under water, losing my grip the board disappeared for several seconds then yanked and pulled at my ankle for a good ten seconds. Knowing which way was up I rushed to the surface, hyperventillating to replenish while remounting my board in the same grip of death I used countless times that day. I knew I wasn't going to die once the board stopped getting ripped from my grip on the inside.
One of my friends caught and rode a wave that day, maybe two. We had another friend who stayed on the beach with a camera and actually captured a photo of it, my tiny friend on that monster wave at least 10 times his height. The friend who rode the wave was named John Nordloff. I don't know if he's alive now. He dropped out of high school and became homeless. The last I saw him my head hung low because I was struggling myself and couldn't take him in. He was a legend... we all were.
Worst I've had was a 2 wave hold down. I'd hate to be down for 3.
Fucking awesome story dude . U got big balls
Damn, just by the way it looked you could tell that wave was so heavy. Like a ocean slamming on top of you.
I'm not religious but every surfer gets to that point in our challenge where we stop everything and begin to talk to God
Haha true. "if there is anyOne, give me your hand NOW! "
I came here to see nut jokes.
Jesus is King Amen
holy hell. fkn warrior.
its insanity to drop behind with a camera...too much near the lip ....too risky....
That's his life mate, not yours.
I don’t know how you stand up with balls that big and made of iron. Fuck me that looked bad.☠️
I seen this wave it’s not a wave it’s tsunami multi lips thick AF surfing the whole ocean it’s the scariest looking 20ft I’ve seen 🥶😰
Fucink wkd no body knows the shit u ou's are going thru and that is waht makes it special. WE HAVE ONLY SO MANY POEPLE ON THIS EART THAT WIL DO IT SO KEEP THE FKN STKOKE!!! WE ARE WE ARE!!!!
Dude in front must have been proper relived he came up ok, that fade sent him beyond deep on that beast.
Shout out whitey and the grin reapers poddy!
Berserk
Lets just go surf a giant close out in shark infested water off Australia😂 no thanks
You seriously need to change up the title. I thought this was going to be like an alt-right beat down of a surfer, not a friggin' wave. I was expecting skin heads and Doc Martins laced up in white or red laces (old school) beating down a long haired hippy surfer. Hahahaha
If you want the same sensation on snow, ski down a crevasse head first, then climb your way out. Been there; done that. But big waves holding you down while trashing your body in a wild rock tumbler ... was more scary for me.
at 1:57 , I legit thought it was a mountain in the background.
I had a wipe out like this at Bondi
That is just your mind playing tricks on you after you swallowed a turd in that cess pool.
happened to me in Tamarama, terrible...
