You know what amazes me most about the Basilisk? How often it gets mixed up with the Cockatrice. When I was a little kid, I had a poetry book called "Dragons, Dragons, and Other Creatures That Never Were," and it had little short poems on many different mythical creatures from around the world, and each poem was accompanied by a painting of that creature. But the picture used for the Basilisk WASN'T a Basilisk. It was a Cockatrice. And the end of the poem said that Basilisk and Cockatrice were two names for the same creature, but later in life, I would learn that they are NOT the same creature and are COMPLETELY unrelated.

I didnt even know mixing them up was a thing!!! How do you mix up a medusa chicken with a giant king snake?
Actually, they are related- There’s an entire transitional period in which the two were considered one creature known as the basilocock.

Fun fact: The Pokemon Giratina is partially based on a basilisk (as well as a centipede and a fallen angel).
