  • In a 1985 NFL game between the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys, QB Joe Theismann celebrated his 36th birthday in just about the worst way possible, as he threw five interceptions and got benched as Washington lost by 30 points in front of a nationally televised Monday Night Football audience. This is the story of the worst birthday in the history of the National Football League

You absolutely have to do a video on the final week of the 1988 season...December 18th 1988 and in particular the games between the Green Bay Packers and Phoenix Cardinals at Sun Devil Stadium and the Cowboys playing at Philly against the Eagles....its the game that nobody realizes changed the course of NFL history forever. The Packers and Cowboys both went into that game with a 3-12 record, but the Packers would have wound up with the number 1 pick in the following draft if both teams finished with identical records. So if the Packers lost they would get the number one pick, if they won and the Cowboys lost the Cowboys would get the top pick. The Cowboys lost to the Eagles 23-7, but the hapless Packers inexplicably beat the Cardinals 26-17, forfeiting the number one pick to the Cowboys. The Cowboys drafted Aikman and the Packers made one of the worst choices in draft history taking Tony Mandarich. If Green Bay loses to the Cardinals that final week they undoubtedly would have taken Aikman, changing the course of NFL history. For Green Bay, they would have had their man at quarterback for the next decade, meaning we likely never would have seen Brett Favre in a Packers uniform. This leads to so many intriguing what if's.
Would Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren ever come to Green Bay or would Aikman have thrived in Lindy Infante's offense?
Would a young Aikman have lost his confidence playing fir an abysmal organization like Green Bay was before Ron Wolf's arrival as GM?
If Holmgren did come to Green Bay what kind of numbers would Aikman have put up in a more QB friendly system like the west coast offense? Would Aikman have put up Favre like numbers, or maybe even better?
Would we have ever heard of Brett Favre or would he have fizzled out on the bench in Atlanta who had no confidence in him whatsoever. Favre was in dire need of a change of scenery and better coaching...would he have ever gotten it?
How many Super Bowls would an Aikman led Packers team have won, would his career have been better or worse in Green Bay?
And what about Dallas? They are on record as admitting that they too were fooled by the Mandarich hype and absolutely loved him going into the draft going as far as to say some personnel men were divided as to who would be the top pick, Aikman or Mandarich. So what if they drafted Mandarich, how far would a pick like that have set back the organization? Jimmy Johnson loved his former University of Miami quarterback Steve Walsh so much that he drafted him in the following Supplemental draft with a number one pick and was torn between him and Aikman early on before having to finally admit Aikman was clearly the more gifted player. BUT.....
What if the Cowboys had the number two pick and didn't get to draft Aikman...would they have been committed to Steve Walsh as their franchise quarterback and if so how would he have done in that role...could Walsh...surrounded by the same talent Aikman was surrounded by, game managed the Cowboys well enough to put them in Super Bowl contention?? If not, once the Cowboys realized how limited Walsh was arm talent wise, who would have wound up as the quarterback of the Cowboys in the early and mid 90's? Would Jimmy Johnson have survived as head coach if Walsh struggled as the starter??
Another major what if is what if Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson seen through the Mandarich hype and instead went another direction with the 2nd overall pick in the 1989 draft....say the direction of south as in Oklahoma State and their Heisman Trophy winning running back BARRY SANDERS!!!!!
What could Barry Sanders have done running behind that legendary Great Wall of Dallas offensive line that was to come...the one that carried Emmitt Smith to the all time rushing record. What could the clearly more talented Sanders have done behind that offensive line?? How many 2,000 yard seasons would Sanders have accumulated?? Would he and not Emmitt Smith now be the NFL all time leading rusher?? Could Sanders have wound up with 20,000 career yards, and would that have been enough to still lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl or two even without Aikman?? And what would have become of Emmitt Smith?? The year he was drafted he was taken 17th overall, one pick ahead of two Green Bay Packers first round selections...one of which was a running back Darrell Thompson. What if the Cowboys already had Barry Sanders and gone a different direction in that draft, leaving the Packers with the option to select Emmitt instead of Thompson. Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith could have wound up as teammates after all....just much further north in Titletown!!
I know how long this comment is...but I've only scratched the surface of the numerous WHAT IF'S that go with the result of these two games, the future of so many legendary players would have been enitrely different if Green Bay had lost that game as was expected....players like obviously Troy Aikman, but also maybe Barry Sanders or even Derrick Thomas or Deion Sanders who were also in that 1989 draft class and could have been the Cowboys choice at two if they passed on Mandarich. Plus the future of players coahces and GM's like Brett Favre, Emmitt Smith, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Holmgren, Ron Wolf, Steve Walsh, Don Majkowski, Michael Irvin, Sterling Sharpe and others would have been entriely different. Could Michael Irvin had been Michael Irvin without Troy Aikman throwing him the ball? How amazing would an Aikman to Sterling Sharpe combination have been in the early 90's?? And where in the world would Brett Favre have wound up??
Green Bay at Phoenix and Dallas at Philadelphia on December 18th 1988...12/18/88....the day that forever changed the future of the NFL forever!!!
I'd love to discuss this with you if you'd like to talk about it further and consider it for a future video, I've done extensive research on this subject and written for a few NFL websites in the past. If you'd like to contact me, please reply to this comment and I can give you my email address. Either way I really hope you consider this for a topic of one of your videos, all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I think this subject is perfect for you and your format. Thanks for your time

      1. I think if the Packers drafted Aikman Number 1 then the Cowboys would have most likely taken Derrick Thomas Number 2. That still causes the dominoes to fall differently than they actually did.

Theismann's last name was pronounced THEES-man his entire life until his senior year at Notre Dame in 1970. The pronunciation change was orchestrated in order to give him a better chance at winning the Heisman, hence the "Theismann for Heisman" phrase was born.
Theismann placed second in the voting behind Jim Plunkett of Stanford, and the pronunciation stuck ever since. Actually, Joe called his grandmother (who was German) and inquired about his name. She told him the name was correctly pronounced TICE-man instead of what he had known his entire life.
It's ironic that Plunkett won the Heisman while Theismann placed second. Of eligible players, Plunkett is the only QB with two Super Bowl wins who is not a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, and Theismann is the only QB with a Super Bowl win and an NFL MVP award not in the HOF. Makes no damn sense to me!

This game was the beginning of the end for Joe Theismann. After playing incredibly well from 1982 to 1984, his production dropped considerably in 1985. There were calls in Washington to bench Theismann and start Jay Schroeder, but Joe Gibbs stayed loyal to Theismann given the three straight playoff berths, two Super Bowl appearances, a world title, and an MVP award. LT though made the decision for Gibbs. After Theismann got hurt, Schroeder went 5-1 to end the year. Washington went 10-6, but missed the playoffs, leading people to wonder if Washington would have made the playoffs had Gibbs went with Schroeder sooner.

This is the “Thurman Thieves” era in Dallas. The Cowboys were second to the Bears with 33INTs in 1985. They had lots of INTs but gave up lots of big plays as well from 1981-85. Dennis Thurman, Michael Downs, Everson Walls. But a very old team offensively, Tony Hill had his best season. The Cowboys, Skins, and Giants were all top 10 defenses in 1985, the Giants actually held the leagues top ranking until the final month of the season. Landry did a lot of gambling, an early form of the zone blitz, did lots of things to disguise coverages mostly to cover up weaknesses in the defense. Often it worked, sometimes it was disastrous. The Cowboys biggest issue was a subpar offensive line that got exposed week after week and they desperately needed speed at receiver

Glauber said that Bill Parcells had the Giants fly out on Sunday night as opposed to Sunday afternoon since he didn’t want them wandering around Washington the rest of Sunday. As a result of traveling logistic snafus, the Giants didn’t get to their hotel until 3 AM. Parcells still insisted the Giants follow their planned routine, which started at 7 AM. As a result the Giants were tired that night. They still played a good game, but they let Jay Schroeder lead Washington to the comeback victory after replacing Theismann.
