Red army is a big shiny wood-facade with lack of effective control in both tactics and strategies. USSR monopolized the control over the workers of 80% of the world. It’s a big ineffective company lead by bunch of insane old-farts named the Nomenclature. Probably not. Real USSR had the atomic weapon since 1952 but lacked the toilet paper until it’s collapse. Probably not. The soldiers lacks the reason to invade some country on the different edge of the world. The rogues getting beaten up and locked in prisons (there’s a lot of ex-ussr-soldiers in the game). Just like US and USSR in Afghanistan.

And when I've seen this intro and this music for the first time, I got frozen and goosebumps instantly. Jesper Kyd is pure genius, and no one get close to him by quality of music, except Mick Gordon. This game is sort of a weird look at our, and I say our as an American, society from a different point of view. In this series' timeline the Soviet Union arguably won the cold war. They were able to spread their political views, their form of Communism around the world and nations around the world embraced Communism, even if the main population did not want to. At this point there is no real threat to the Soviet Union anymore, sure the US exists but to the best of our knowledge the US government does not even know how to make nuclear devices to keep the Soviets at bay. (This is quite similar to the situation today, The US is a massive superpowered nation, France, Germany, and the UK being some of the other stronger ones are all allies as well and would not go to war with one another anytime in the near future, at least from what I can guess. Democracy, in one form or another, is now a good deal of the world's governments and few nations of the world are still run by a main king or queen. Some of these Democracies are not true Democracies but still run under the name of Democracy. Communism for the most part is dead and not really a threat anymore.) Now looking back at FF timeline the USSR's last "threat", if it could be called that, is the US and hostilities have been rising slowly between the two, going as far as anti Communist Terrorist groups. Finally the USSR decides the best way to stop the threat of terrorism is to invade the terrorist's main homeland, the US and to finally spread communism to the last corner of the world. Basically following a motto of "They are different so they are a threat." (Going back to real history we look at the US once again at the events of 911 and other similar terrorist attacks. The US and democracy was "under threat" of a small body of terrorists and the best way to ensure the safety of the US was to invade the middle east, gut out the terrorist groups, and establish Democracy in the middle east. Now this game was released in 2003 but was being worked on before the events of 911. Now I'm not saying there is any relation between the two but looking at the events of this game and the events of the war in the middle east it leading up to now. it seems a bit scary how realistic the game portrays the Soviet take over of the US to ensure the safety of their motherland. These soviet men do not think they are doing a bad thing, they think they are saving the US from itself and defending the USSR at the same time. The timeline may not be the same but it is a good reminder of how the US and their buddies are starting to act)
Well, here is what really happened. 3 Atomic Bombs were dropped during World War II, the first one Atomic Bomb drop was on Berlin to end World War II in Europe, the other two were obviously Hiroshima and Nagasaki. What happened is the Soviet Union became Number 1 in Superpower and the United States became Number 2 in superpower. This started the Cold War. NATO was never formed in this Alternate timeline as the Soviet Union gained more land in Europe than they did in real life. Obviously, North Korea and China won the Korean War, and the UN troops retreated in 1953. As a result of the US/UN involvement in the Korean War, many nations of Europe decided to join the Soviet Cause. The Cuban Missile Crisis went on for many years longer than it did. By the 1970's Central America has been United under a Communist rule, and have become Soviet Puppet States, the Communist Revolution in Chile still occurs, only this time the Communist Government of Chile stays in power. Obviously, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Oceania were absorbed into the Peoples Republic of China in 1975. The Soviet Union in 1979 invaded and annexed Afghanistan and later Iran, and Iraq. Operation Desert Storm never does occur in this Alternate Universe. By 1996, Mexico joins the Communist Bloc in Central America. The 9/11 attacks still occur in this Alternate Timeline. Now what happens is the Soviet Union decided to invade the the Middle Eastern countries not under Communist Rule, Australia, the rest of South America, Africa, etc. in order to start World War III in 2003. The USA got involved in World War III by invading Iraq, Spain, Portugal, and Central America, the Soviet Union retaliated by invading the United States Eastern Seaboard, the Southern United States, Southern California, and Alaska in 2004, and now the world is engulfed in World War III. Basically, Europe embraced Communism for ending World War II, Cold War I lasted WAY longer than it did and it ended in the Soviet Union and the United States duking it out.
Considering this timeline's USSR has bases in Cuba and Mexico, and they had drones flying across the continental USA, they had complete air superiority on the eve of the invasion. If this USA has a nuclear arsenal, the SAC bases and missile silos were probably the very first targets by Soviet drone strikes and cruise missiles launched from Cuba, Mexico, as well as those missile subs staged off the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. Not to mention this USSR might have even had a missile defense shield as backup with the entirety of Europe under their control to help provide technical expertise to develop it, as well as the sort of native talent in this timeline that allowed them to develop the atomic bomb before the USA did in WW2.
Balls. This game is all about big Soviet balls. They said "Forget your nukes, forget your guns. We're here." I think the fact that they didn't even bother explaining US nukes just adds to the feeling of overwhelming superiority of the enemy here. They just march into the US and take everything like it's nothing. The fact that said act should be impossible adds so much weight and dread on the player's part. No worries though, I have the same question, but I guess I'm kinda glad they just disregarded it, because it demonstrates the insignificance of any resistance to this enemy.
