    • @animeaunty
      @animeaunty 5 лет назад +35

      Sadly, I think most Petsmart managers would fire an employee that refused too many sales based on that employees judgement of the customs "level of care"
      With those stores, the damage is already done when they buy their stock from those breeders that only care about quantity & money as Alex here demonstrated n that video when he called a bunch of stores. That video also demonstrated that many many of the employees that sell the animals have NO CLUE. How can an employee judge the customers ability if they themselves r clueless? I understand some stores have some knowledgeable staff but that is the exception, not the rule.
      NEVER purchasing animals from these stores is the ONLY way to improve the animals care. Even 'rescuing' from the store encourages them to buy more sad pets from sad breeders. BOYCOTT! & effect some real change!!!

    Damn.. I got my first reptile when I was 13 years old and I took better care of them. I had no clue what I was doing and I just asked around, googled, watched videos and I figured it out. My first snake was a corn snake and he was great and lived for 6 years with me (was old when I got him) I also had a emperor scorpion (died of old age) and then I had a iguana that sadly was sent to me with issues, was literally starving and near dead in the package. They sent me a "replacement" ball python who was so badly malnourished you could see every bone in their body which is disgusting to do to a snake. A species that can go a week or more without eating and still not be starving! That was literally the last time I tried to get reptiles because I was so heart broken at the way they treated the animals and I really didnt want to see another scaley baby come in that condition. I just demanded my money back, left bad reviews and reported them.
    Some people should just never have animals in their care.

    The store where I worked, and sent the leopard gecko from, gets their reptiles from Reptile Industries. I'm sorry that I did't mention that in my initial correspondence. I wasn't the only person in charge of animal care there, but I can definitely say that the gecko didn't get the proper diet. All that we were allowed to feed were crickets, and they were not gut loaded. I sent him to you because I knew that he needed care that the store couldn't provide and that the managers were most likely to just sell him to someone that had no clue what they were doing. It's an unfortunate reality that I've learned about the pet industry. I've since quit working at that store.

      If it cheers you up, my mom impulse-bought 15 years old me an eyelash gecko from the local pet store in my arse-end-of-nowhere town, said shop said she was entirely insectivore and called her a "spotted" gecko and fed her real badly. I wanted to know her gender and discovered Banana was a New Caledonia eyelash gecko in the process and found exactly what she needed diet and habitat-wise, and my goodness I was determined to make her life as good as possible. Got her used to my handling her, endured the occasional escaped crickets driving me nuts at night for the sake of them being full of yummy things for her, and accidentally got her to associate my fingers with tasty baby food.
      Chewed my mother out for buying me a "surprise gift" because as much as I loved Banana I would have chosen a fully human-friendly gecko if it was up to me and only after figuring out if there's a vet in town that deals with exotics, and definitely wouldn't have bought it from such a P.O.S. store that can't even feed their critters the right things.
      So there's the rare miracles where an idiot buys a pet from an uncaring store and gifts it to someone who goes above and beyond to find out what's right for them.

      Not really a reptile expert, however I am a CNA, and have worked with patients before with muscle atrophy. In many cases, mobility can be improved with physical therapy, however if it has advanced to a contracture deformity, then surgery would be needed. Contracture deformity is when the muscles have atrophied to a point that the limbs are stiff, and cannot be pulled straight. Since this beardie's limbs still seem like they can be pulled without much force, then I would think physical therapy, coupled with proper care for the MBD, could help Lucky at least get some mobility back, but it would also depend on the extent of the damage, such as if the joints are deformed as well.

      For beardies swim therapy may help as when submerged their natural inclination is to try and paddle. Obviously this should be done with 100% supervision and they should be supported from below to keep them above water at all times.
      Like others have said tho depending on how bad the bones are no ammount of muscle will matter if its bones can support it or are locked in useless positions.

      People like the idea of owning the animal. Its fun and exciting for a few months... They it gets put to one side and occasionally looked after.
      I've known someone who got a reptile because they didn't think it would be a difficult pet... You don't need to walk it and most of the day it will do nothing. It doesn't need "to be feed every day". Etc. The usual crap. Some things happens with fish, I used to bred budgies and tropical fish. The budgies were easy but the fish... People stuck them in a tank and just tossed food in there once a day. No water change, nothing.

I'm glad he doesn't seem stressed out but his condition potentially being permanent and restricting him to a life of effectively being a living rock makes me question whether or not that is a situation were euthanization should be considered. Despite the apparent lack of pain just... not being able to anything, even as simple as moving to point A to point B for temperature control...

    I blame the pet stores.
    When I was in college, I worked for a chain pet store that was common in shopping malls. We were trained on how to run a cash register and that was pretty much it. It is now almost 30 years later and I am horrified at how little those of us who worked there knew. What's worse were the lies we were told to tell about the animals just to get a sale. I was reprimanded once for telling a customer that a puppy can't really be house trained until 6 months of age (this is due to brain development). The official line was it could be done in a couple weeks. Most reptiles as the time were considered to be a "disposable pet" meaning that it was the sort of thing you get for a kid and it's no big deal if it dies off quickly. I quit after two months.

    Reminds me of a RES my second cousin has. Large female in a 10 gallon with gravel, fed a few "turtle" pellets a day. It used to have a tank full of water, but they've never done a water change aside from when they put the water in over a year ago, so it's down to about a centimeter of brown poop-water. When I found out (over text, our mutual cousin asked if they could keep a turtle tank on the ground and I asked about the turtle), I texted them about proper care and suggested many cheap ways to improve the quality of life until they rehome or ugprade it, like filling up the tank, letting her sunbath outside, etc., and my cousin responded saying something along the lines of , "Well, she said none of them really care about it so...". They still have the turtle, and apparently they found it in their house somehow and decided to "rescue" it. Yep, they consider the worst treatment of a turtle I've ever seen in person a "rescue". Anyway, I just had to vent because this really annoyed me.
