- 1000 Miles for Pantry Secrets: Preserving Garden Goodies on a Canadian Homestead!
This is the third video in our series where we toured Hickorycroft farm a Canadian Homestead located in Ontario Canada, and this video focuses in on the importance of preserving the garden harvests and using the products created by the animals as well (such as wool) in order to be more self-sufficent.
This Canadian homesteading family has a 38 acre farm where they not only have an incredibly productive garden (zone 4b garden equivalent), but also raise animals, and are ambitious with preserving and creating an outstanding, full pantry, and they even do some food pantry hauls on their channel and are great examples of frugal living.
Hickorycroft's website is here: hickorycroftfarm.com
Hickorycroft's main channel is here: / @hickorycroftfarm
Hickorycroft's pantry living channel is here: / @pantryliving
In our opinion, the miles/kilometers were well worth the drive to meet this family but also to see all the amazing aspects of this Canadian homestead. We were left feeling inspired with a desire to do even more preservation.
We want to thank Steph and Chris for being so willing to answer all our questions and for welcoming us into their homestead.
Thank you so much for watching!

Fantastic video guys! Thank you so much for all the wonderful promotion that you have given us. It was a real pleasure having you all here and can't wait to do it again!
Thanks for highlighting them! Another favorite homestead! When I found out she had the pantry channel, I immediately subscribed. I've also always wanted sheep to make cheese and wool. And hug, of course. Lol
I never thought about storing jars without the rings. Blew my mind! 🤯❤
This is so informative!
Nice video about canning…
And the spinning!!
I love this video! But I do want to remind people that if for some reason you have crop failure Or you didn't get a chance to plant what you wanted or not enough , if you live near a u-pick Farm, farmers market, and even sometimes grocery stores have wonderful sales , you can buy large quantities and preserve from those sources as well. It still ends up being cheaper in the long run.
I made squash soup and it was so good fresh, I just couldn't do it canned. It wasn't curry or anything but just the look. lol I so disliked watermelon pickles, what is wrong with people that they eat those. 🤣 I've been canning about 30 years and yep you just have some come undone at some point. Our favorite soup is tomato and its so good, it does have flour and butter so not "approved" but its so good.
