I would love to see a design like this done with modern hardware I would happily have a suitcase pc if it bridged a performance gap between laptop and desktop
Get a case like this and you can build pretty much anything in it, the only limiter I can think of is that there's no ITX Threadripper motherboard and only one ITX x299 motherboard, but most people would be perfectly happy with a 3950x or 9900k. www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Cases/Graphite-Series%E2%84%A2-380T-Portable-Mini-ITX-Case/p/CC-9011061-WW
I would love to see a modern 'sleeper' PC build in this thing! You could replace the panel with a high refresh IPS panel and really surprise some people xD
I'm currently doing that to a twin to RETRO Hardware's, buts its a P4 model. I have a bunch of these laying around. Only issue is the motherboard mounts upside down so the processor is at the bottom, and I need to use liquid cooler because the power supply will be sitting right over the CPU. Should be interesting.
I should take one of those Shuttle cases and recreate this PC with modern hardware and a 15 inch portable display. Trick would be finding a keyboard you could mount to the side. hehe cool PC mang!
Nice project! You can try to get the digital data from the inputs of the V2-DAC. It seems to be 5:6:5 (bit per color) so it should - in theory - be usable for controlling the panel. Then you need fast analog switches (the voodoo uses them for changing vom VGA to its own output, but they don't offer enough ports). Should be possible, but maybe a bit overkill ;-) As a base, i'd suggest a card with 2D+3D (e.g. V3) or something like a matrox which offers digital interfaces on its own and should be adoptable to the panel.
Carmageddon was first 3d game i ever have played and loved that game. Last summer was nostalgia trip when i played whole game again with tablet. Game is free in play store.

You may be able to throw in a separate LCD driver board if you knew the pinouts of that ribbon cable. Unfortunately it's probably not info you can find easily.
I found a system like that but it was white. It was on the curb when the neighbors moved. Was missing the Power Supply, Hard Drive, optical drive, RAM and CPU. I stripped it down and built it as my Gaming rig since I was attending a bunch of LAN parties. Had a AMD K6-2 500MHz, 128MB RAM, Sound Blaster Live, Voodoo 2, Realtek 10/100 NIC, Iomega Zip-CD 650, 30GB Hard Drive and 1.44MB floppy but switched to a LS-120 Floppy. It ran Windows 2000 Pro. At one point right when 3Dfx went bye bye I bought a Voodoo 3 3000 for $60.00 on clearance and then used a 19 inch CRT TV for Gaming since it had S-Video and I think I tossed in another 64MB of RAM into it. Then over the years when it was too slow for anything I removed the Sound Blaster Live and Voodoo Card and turned it into my first Linux Box running Redhat 7.1. I have no idea what happen to that machine, might be in the attic in the house I grew up in.
Heh, I had a BX98-3D motherboard for Slot-1... very surprising to see one like that here. Oh you should enable "Read Around Write" in BIOS for better RAM performance. But then it might start to lock-up in some workloads.
Vou tak to je pecka , taková nostalgie . Také mám zkušenosti s voodoo sice 1 a 3 ale na tu dobu výkon :D ps: Si říkám kde bereš takové HW klenoty ? To musí být velmi náročné i finančně co ?
I can tell you've never played Blood before!! Haha. Beautiful portable desktop, I'm JEALOUS!! I also have a PPGA celeron (366) with VooDoo II SLI and an AWE 64 Gold. Great minds think alike ;)
Daaaaamn. ATX compatibility, but absolutely requires you to have that particular ribbon cable female port on your GPU. It's almost a waste, could be the perfect LAN party box (yeah, LAN parties are outdated, but imagine!). There's a certain charm to putting desktop parts in a transportable crate with everything snapped on to it, as opposed to a laptop, and somtimes I wish AIOs were made this way instead of those flat panels that can't be modified, opened or repaired.
5:44 See the date codes on the IC chips when from week 10 in 1999 Back in the day when 3DFX was still a healthy company and their products was "da thing". In SLI mode the Voodoo 2 put NVIDIA's RIVA TNT2, Matrox's Millennium G400, and even NVIDIA's GeForce 256 to shame!
How come GTA doesn't work on internal display but other 3D games do? White VGA cable only connects stock adapter to Voodoo passthrough input, doesn't work the other way around, does it?
Really cool project. I would Like to see, If it is stable at 100 x 5 or even a multi of 6. XD is the board able to do more than 100MHz? The PCI cards were stable over 33MHz so there should be a nice overclock reachable.
It's possible the board can't even do 100 mhz. There were several crippled chipsets that Intel used with socket 370 for the Mendocino Celerons (440zx?) that were intentionally held to 66mhz to prevent more debacles like the overclocking of the slot 1 300 mhz Celeron. What might be a nice update would be a voltage interposer/adapter and a 733 or 766 Coppermine celeron. I upgraded a few locked up PPGA 370 machines like that 15 years ago.
@@dennisp.2147 The Northbridge ist the VIA VT82C691 so it should Support 66/100MHz and what else ist the Option in the BIOS for? The Mendocino Celeron at it's best clocks 533MHz stock.
