Been using this for a while now and really love the options it brings. That was a great point about being able to combine the different support options on some complex prints. Hopefully Prusa will take the advice and bring that out in a future release.
I'm curious to know, does it actually use less material and print faster? Based on your video, the moment you sliced using Organic, it does show a larger amount of filament used (55.93g vs 57.62g) and a longer print time (15h 39m vs 16h 55m) Does Prusa Slicer just have issues properly representing these values (i.e. it's actually much more efficient/ faster than shown) or am I missing something? One of the selling points of Organic supports are faster print times/ lesser material spent for supports so I'm quite confused by this.
I have found PS does have problems calculating the time and materials. Also, it kind of depends on the part. Organic supports seem to be way to dense by default, you don't need near that many. I'm hoping over time the settings will become more robust and the saving/speed will become more obvious.
Great explanation of the supports and uses. I agree the ability to brush in standard vs tree or just brush in where you want the slicer to add tree and where to add standard.
just tried this on a complicated model. I was trying different variants with paint on and support blockers/enforcers and then followed your video while trying it on mine. My first reaction: " WOW" . .. thx for the video !
Hi Chris, Informative video Sir, thank you... When it comes to having to use supports, I still end up using Simplify 4.1.2, as they just peel off so cleanly, I have tried using similar settings with Prusa, but still find it hard to remove them cleanly, I've not tried using the organic ones yet, so will give them a try... Thank you again for yet another great video... Andy...
Yeah, the ability to mix traditional and organic supports would be nice. Or be able to export them, although I suppose They are not generating triangles but curved paths directly.
Chris Thank you for the comment. You read the error correctly. Got frustrated and went back to the main screen. I saw that I had supports turned off and tried turning on support and when I went back to the settings I could select organic supports. I am a retired programmer so I knew I had to change a setting somewhere. I selected supports and went back and could do organic support. I just went into PrusaSlicer and there is a 2.7.1 now. Thank you for your help and have fun printing. We just got another printer Neptune Pro 4. Thank you.
Nice overview! I've really been pleased with organic supports. One tip from 2.6.0-alpha2 release notes: "Interface layers are not always produced reliably. As of now printing with zero interface layers is recommended, which produces easy to remove supports." Apparently they've since fixed the bottom interface layers, but I still find supports easier to remove without top interface layers.
It's odd seeing prusa slicer in blinding mode. I'm so used to dark mode. lol But yes, hybrid supports would be nice. There is one other feature I would like. I decided to try using PLA colors on PETG for my MK4 kit (shipping soon TM lol) I wasn't sure it was going to work, but it did. However the one problem I had, was the wipe tower. It would be nice if they could have a mostly PLA tower and a mostly PETG tower. I think it would help. I really wanted to do multi-material organic supports on the mirror bezel for my parent's car (93 mercedes I believe) but I was having enough trouble with just normal PETG on its own I decided to abandon that. Also I honestly don't know if there is enough room on the bed anyway. The part is so large it barely fits when carefully rotated. So I only have a little area in 2 of the corners left. V1 printed successfully, but I had to reduce speed to 70%. When I did 100% the organic supports kept collapsing. The only issue was the original part has some structural infill that's exposed. I tried to print that as exposed gyroid. It didn't go so well. You can't tell from the outside though. V1 should work I was painstakingly measuring everything on the original with calipers, but I'm not happy with it. For V2 I made the structural infill have a solid hull. So it's no longer exposed. That's the only change I made. My parents are coming on friday. V2 should be done on friday morning. Also I still have the front part. I want to give them a 2nd one of those just in case. But that part is a lot easier and faster to print. It barely requires any supports.
@@ChrisRiley and yeah blinding mode. The older I get the more sensative my eyes are to light. I hate going outside especially during the day. I'm becoming a vampire. lol
I am relievedly new to 3d printing. I want to use the organic trees but when I go to Support Material > Options for support material and raft > Style: The option is grayed out. What do I have to do to activate that option. Help thank you very much for your help. Ray
That's strange, I would upgrade to the newest version, 2.7.1. Make sure you have it set to expert mode and you turn supports on in the main page, the plater, it's under printer settings.
It made the print take 1 hour longer and was only a 4 gram difference in filament used. But better quality and easier to break off the piece I guess. What I want to know is if they work well for tinny support pieces on smaller objects then the normal support material style.
actually cura has a new version of tree supports I think it's 5.3, but I'm not sure. Anyway......the new version is more or less the same thing as organics. As for new tree (or organics) vs old tree I have no idea. I saw a video on it. It was interesting, but I already forgot it. lol
Do a youtube search for "new vs old tree supports" The first video should be "The Xmas Alpha Release of Cura contains new tree supports and it's a big deal.." That's the video I saw. It does a pretty good job and you can see a pretty big difference in the first 10 seconds.
@@ChrisRiley Thanks for your response Chris. But I have to correct you on this one. (i'd never thought that would happen. ;-) ) I have used tree support in cura pretty much since it was introduced, and I have never ever sliced a model with tree support that contained infill. biggest problem i have is that my model doesnt stick to build plate and 2/3 through nozzle hits it and it moves ruining it all. Everythings levels as it should be. Also in Prusa there isnt option to increase raft nor theres option to print multiple elements because of some stupid error about tall object you cant turn off and it wont process it into G code

I wish that slicer coders would add a function to auto cut a small area away where the seam goes so that the seam material fills this area

Hello Chris. Is it possible, when you test a beta version to call it accordingly in the video title. It can confuse the way it is.
Good call, I can do that.

This is done with the Prusa MMU2.
