  • Our latest student lecture is the first in the Quantum Theory course for Second Year Students. Fernando Alday reflects on the breakdown of the deterministic world and describes some of the experiments that defined the new Quantum Reality.
    This is the sixth lecture in our series of Oxford Mathematics Student Lectures. The lectures aim to throw a light on the student experience and how we teach. All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.
    You can also watch many other student lectures via our main Student Lectures playlist (also check out specific student lectures playlists): • Oxford Mathematics Stu...

      Because it's difficult for a native English speaker to follow an accented English speaker. I personally struggle to stay focused when listening to him and I mostly understand the content he's presenting. His English is fine in terms of grammar. I'm pretty sure if he wrote it all down it would be fine but it's difficult to listen to.

    • @davidpnewton
      @davidpnewton 4 года назад +30

      "Because it's difficult for a native English speaker to follow an accented English speaker."
      Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Not only talks utter rubbish, but doesn't even know the proper definition of the main word being used to talk utter rubbish!
      What is an "accent"? It's the prominence or stress of syllables in words in terms of their loudness, pitch or length or a combination of any of those factors. Where in that definition does "native speaker" come up? NOWHERE! What does that mean? Why it means that native speakers of a language have an accent! Native speakers of a language can have many different combinations of loudness, pitch or length of syllable. Native speakers can have many accents!
      There are many native speaker accents that I would find much more difficult to understand than this Spanish accent. Strong Dublin accent; broad Glaswegian accent and probably worst of all Deep South accent!
      If you're going to talk about a person being difficult to understand at least understand the proper meaning of the terminology that you are trying to use!

    • @milly4543
      @milly4543 4 года назад +5

      @@davidpnewton I am honestly done with commenting on the Internet. How about you refrain from calling it rubbish unless you've actually got proof that it is? Also, can you not get into semantics? I know exactly what an accent is but colloquially we call foreign accented English as accented. It's absolutely the case with me and most of my friends. My parents that are non native speakers are much better at understanding non native English speakers with heavy foreign accents than I am. Most, if not all, of my friends feel the same way (most of them are from immigrant families and have noticed just how much better their parents are when it comes to understanding non native English speakers). Get over yourself.

    • @davidpnewton
      @davidpnewton 4 года назад +2

      It is NOT semantics in the sense of fussing over minor variations of the use of the word. It is the fundamental meaning of the word. I have never previously heard accent used in that colloquial way, and if it is being used in that colloquial way it's actually an extremely unhelpful colloquialism as it introduces huge problems of understanding.
      As for me "proving" what you said was rubbish, I need do nothing of the sort. Your fundamental misuse of the meaning of the word crucial to the assertion you are making does all the proving that is needed. Given what you have said I suspect that I could legitimately call your English a foreign accent. Reason for that? I suspect that you live in the United States. That's a foreign nation to me, and I am a native English speaker myself. So when I reference the Deep South accent, technically I am talking about a foreign accent from my perspective.
      Turning to the point of substance, does he have a slightly thick accent? Yes. It's a fairly standard accent for a Spaniard speaking English. Is it comprehensible and can the lecture be understood by native speakers? Yes to both questions. Clearly it can't be understood easily by all native speakers, as you prove. Oh and he does write virtually everything he says of importance down.
      BTW before anyone jumps in to criticise and say anything about a Spaniard understanding what I say, yes I do speak Spanish. I don't speak it particularly well in terms of vocabulary, but in terms of pronunciation I speak it very well.

    His accent indeed confuse me at first, but after 5 minutes, i become used to his accent and able to follow his lesson better.
    Outside of his accent, he has a talent as a lecturer because he delivered his lesson flawlessly. Even for me whom dumb at math, i could follow this. Amazing. This is the first time i am able to understand advance math.

    Good lecture...very clear in terms of writing/notes. I remembered some of my maths lecturer who talked and just scribble here and there for the whole lecture...assuming the studnts to understand😆. some are difficult to understand in terms of their pronounciation...my russian lecturer. Nevertheless...they are all very experienced professors and appreciate all the knowledge they gave...

    1,) Do not face your audience. Your audience, and particularly the thousands of people out on RUclips, all want to see the back of your head. A lot. All through the lecture.
    2.) Spend a lot of time writing stuff on the board. You don't want the lecture to go too quickly.
    3.) Make the important stuff visual. Nothing gives us the feeling we're getting a university education like reading "*WE WILL NOT GIVE A FIRST PRINC DERIVATION (NO ONE CAN!)" which you have written with your very own hands on tHe white-board whIle we watched. This is very inspirational.

This is especially the case of the teacher's teaching activities. Each student should follow this lesson regularly so that the students can understand it.
