  • When you look up “fashion show” in the dictionary, this is the show that should be there. Using the grand Palais Garnier opera house in Paris as the backdrop, John Galliano staged a vivid spectacle for the Spring/Summer 1998 Dior haute couture collection. With archival footage and interviews from Galliano and the likes of Diana Ross and Dominick Dunne, Tim Blanks reflects on the opulent sensory overload that’s on the record as his favorite fashion show-ever.

    oh yeah, i remember Tim Blanks reporting on this collection in FF. in those days, there were editors and fashion experts sharing and commenting on shows. nowadays bloggers with limited vocabulary of 5 adjectives and $ signs while talking.

    Yes! Those were the days.
    Galliano celebrated the long and storied history of the Haute Couture at every opportunity. Even in Dior ready wear.
    We must never allow the art to pass away.
    Some things must remain. And not only remain, but be supported and celebrated.

    THIS is haute couture! Every new Dior couture show makes me come back to what they used to be and it just shows how much of a joke they've become. You look at these clothes and they FEEL like the epitome of luxury, craftsmanship at its peak - now the couture show garments all look like they could be from a nice prom dress boutique.

    What a gorgeous show and craftsmanship, the Craftsmanship.. loved the the ball. The clothes were very nostalgic. So the perfume was ..... hum old -- old glamour that was revived. I would not say it was modern.. but Great to hear about.

    I am such a fan of #TBT! I grew up watching Fashion File so it's a blast to revisit these iconic shows and faces. Tim Blanks is one of most precious voice in fashion. His deep understanding and knowledge of fashion is astounding and the words he chooses to describe the shows can be as beautiful and poetic as the show itself. Describing Claude Montana's show as "imperious" and that "Montana made clothes to dress these people, like Gods falling to earth..." Absolutely poetic! My only complaint is that #TBT is not a full length show. I have subscribed and shared. Looking forward to more!

    What happened to fashion shows? I'm tired of the robotic zombie esk emotionless walk that models have today, clothes change the way you feel, why can't you show it? If a dress makes you feel beautiful you should be able to transmit how beautiful you feel in it, Fashion needs to get back to this kinds of shows.

      Yes!! When they express themselves through smiling, twirling, greeting the crowd and even kissing (I’m obsessed with the two at 2:29 ) it feels like a PERFORMANCE! Not like mannequin marionettes dully being paraded around a stage. I’m not a fashionista, but clothing is a way to express oneself, like an extra limb, it becomes apart of us. And stoic models are like lifeless, amputated limbs when they wear such expressionist clothing with expressionless faces.

    Miss Ross purchased one of Galliano's first pieces following his graduation show.
    HC is not a show, especially in the hands of THE Master, Yves Saint Laurent.
    It's about providing women with the tools to go out & live their lives with power & sensuality, with the highest quality tailoring, textiles, etc., available.
    Anything else, like what is presented here, is just costume design, albeit exquisitely tailored costume design.

      Um, this is Haute Couture?

    • @rodval2322
      @rodval2322 6 лет назад +7

      Costume? this is pure art, how Haute Couture is suppossed to be, Couture can be worn if it's designed for the everyday life but also can have the same use as a beautiful painting, you don't wear a painting, you buy it to see the beauty on it, only a few lucky people can afford it but if you have the money to buy a dress just to look at it then go for it. Haute Couture collections are not always for you to wear it to go walk your dog to the park and that is totally fine.

    • @Philokally
      @Philokally 6 лет назад +2

      While a common error, _haute couture_ is not to be confused with _haute bourgeois_ -- YSL designed for the latter; Galliano evokes, as it were, the pagan gods at play, i.e., the boundless realm of desire....

    • @ImanniShows
      @ImanniShows 5 лет назад +2

      I find your comments quite unfortunate. Have you seen this collection properly? Haute couture has the power to have no boundaries in terms of creativity. All the designs in this collection were based on the first decades of last century but with a touch of extravagant finishes. Every single couturier has its own way of creating and there's a women for each one of them. The classic, the discrete, the eccentric, the showoff, according to their personality and life style. If I could afford there's quite few pieces from this collection i would purchase and proudly wear it.
