I’m on my 7th BMW. It’s the devil I know. I know that once it hits around 60k, I need to start watching for leaks both oil and coolant. All manufacturers who use these plastic ended hoses are susceptible to this. I do all my own work and save a ton over money.
This motor is Land Rover/Jaguar’s own creation. It might be susceptible to head gasket issues, who knows. Typically a motor has to be beaten hard before a head gasket goes.

Dave, I worked at a Jag Rover dealer for about five years. The 3.0L and 5.0L Supercharged engines are notorious for having a failed head gasket. Not due to strictly failing because they are bad, but these motors when they have a leak and customers won't fix the issue or say, "ah.. I'llhave them look next oil change", they run them low on coolant and they FAIL. The heads warp easy too. They also burn holes in pistons. When removing the heads, really check out those pistons. Just cover your butt, look you usually do.
Timing chains are usually in questions around 100,000 as well. This customer is approaching that mileage and if you have the heads off, that'd be the time to recommend it, in my opinion.

It has been my experience with any modern motor that has had a overheating event, damage has occurred. How much damage and how it will manifest itself is unknown. Modern motors are highly engineered precision machines and do not tolerate abuse, which I believe is a poor engineering choice,no room for error. A head gasket failure would be best case .

Just did this job on a 2016 Supercharged 5.0L a few months. Talk about a major pain the ass trying to get all of the connectors disconnected on the backside of the supercharger. Going back together is even more fun. I replaced most plastic with aluminum upgrades where I could and replaced the other plastic parts that I couldn’t get in aluminum. While I was in there I did the water pump and thermostat as well.
The factory coolant crossover at the front of the engine has been updated with a new part number. It is now a single piece of plastic instead of two halves that are fused together. With the old part number, coolant would start leaking where the halves come together as a crack would form. In my experience, the break occurs at the O-ring flange that goes into the engine. I surmise that the plastic just can’t take the heat from the supercharger long term because the crossover pipe was breaking apart as I was taking it out as if it was Bakelite.

I'd rather have an old Lexus GX than any Range Rover. Back in 2004 , my dad had to have a Caddy AWD 6.0 LQ9 Escalade (GMT800 platform). I told him then to get a Lexus or Toyota. The front diff was replaced at 42K miles, then the dreaded AC blend doors where you take the dash out to get to it. But that's about the extent of repairs for the first 80K miles. The GMT800 platform is regarded as one of the best GM truck platforms. It's the LS based Vortec 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 engines that make the GMT800 shine. You do see the old GMT800 quite often with 300K - 400K miles. . I inherited the 2004 Caddy. It always starts and 5 years ago we did a 4K mile trip in it with no problems.
Still, the build quality goes to the Lexus. My elderly mom has a 2010 model with nothing ever done to it , except for regular maintenance .
My ultimate truck would be a OLD one with a small block Chevy with Turbo 400 tranny . No touch screens, minimal electronics, with 1960s tech cable activated AC controls, with an engine bay you can climb into with room to spare.

Great video! In the L405 5.0 SC engines there is that plastic y pipe and also a rear plastic crossover tube that connects between the heads by the firewall. That rear crossover tube also leaks the coolant often evaporates as it runs down the bell housing and onto the exhaust. Anytime that SC comes off the front plastic y pipe, rear crossover and the oil cooler gasket should be replaced as they will all fail at some point. There are aftermarket aluminum pipes for the front y hose parts as well. You can also pressure test the block before you put on the SC by capping off some of the open hoses and pumping compress air in, pulling the plugs and seeing if the coolant runs back into the cylinders but the eghaust gas test you recommended is definitive as well. Hope the head gaskets are fine for your customer!

These cars are engineered this way for one reason to keep the service department busy. They don’t make a lot of range rovers, but they can insure the dealers make a lot of money on the upfront sale, and all the maintenance that comes, especially after the warranty expires.

Some real boneheaded and ignorant comments in here. First off we don’t know how long this RR has been driven low on coolant. Secondly we don’t know if the customer overheated the engine. Third this shop did not do the job correctly. They did not install the updated part nor did they do all the parts you should do when the supercharger is off. The JLR 5.0 S/C is a great engine but needs to have its oil changed at least every 7.5k with the correct approved oil & make sure no coolant leaks. With proper maintenance the L405/ L494 are amazing SUV’s. They get a bad rap because most people don’t do the proper maintenance so they fail. This can happen with any vehicle. I see it every day with Mercedes.

    • @jokerzwild00
      @jokerzwild00 5 месяцев назад

Lots of vehicles get a bad rap because they require specific maintenance that customers aren't used to. For example, Jatco CVTs. Change the fluid and filters at the recommended intervals and they can last 200k miles+. Neglect those things and you're gonna need a trans sooner than anyone would like. Nobody is used to changing transmission fluid every 20k miles so it's not something people would normally think about. A huge problem with that is the miscommunication between Nissan dealerships and their customers though, because a lot of these people are being told by dealers that these CVTs require no maintenance. Sometimes they were told lifetime fluid even! Also that the filters are unserviceable. One of them is a paper filter. Lol. So there was initially a lot of confusion about it. Bottom line is that, as a consumer it's up to you to research the high dollar products that you purchase. If you care about them anyway.

I have a Jaguar with this motor. I find it funny how people shit in these things. Yes these plastic coolant hoses have issues. They sit under the supercharger and on the back of the motor behind the charger. Where most of the heat goes. They’re half and half pieces molded together and eventually break after so long of wear. There’s a kit for these motors less than 100$ where you replace the two different pipes with aluminum pipes. I did mine and it took me 3 hours maybe? Got a 17 Xe. Haven’t had a single issue since I bought it with 60,000 I’m at 90 now. I replaced these tubes as preventative maintenance. The tubes have been on for 20-22 thousand miles. People jumping to ignorant conclusions without knowing the history🤦‍♂️
What were the first 70k miles of history? Did someone attempt to swap out the coolant and it did not get properly bled?
The only known facts are the current owner bought a vehicle that was having cooling system problems, we do not know what led to that problem. Head gasket failures on AJ133 is extraordinarily rare unless the vehicle has had a significant overheating event, same as most any all alloy engine. The AJ133 is a Ford engineered and produced motor, very similar to the Coyote motor with a few updates like Bosch direct injection.
Many of the issues that owners have with JLR products is dealership service related. Many of the dealerships lack a master tech that has completed all of the JLR technical courses yet JLR does not enforce their service rules which require a master level certified tech to maintain the franchise. There’s VERY few qualified independent shops that are trained and capable of servicing these vehicles in US market.
If Dave’s auto has the knowledge and tools to properly service a JLR product, SLC JLR owners are very fortunate. We have several JLR vehicles, all bought from new and properly serviced and maintained. My son’s LR4 has over 230k miles that’s had very few issues; front air struts, a high pressure fuel pump and an alternator besides routine maintenance. Our 2012 Range Rover is just over 165k miles, also no major issues. Maintain them properly, very sound vehicles and exceptionally safe and capable in mountain snow conditions.

Designed to fail. Personally i think late 90's vehicles were the best in terms of quality and reliability. In the UK we destroyed them all with a government scrappage scheme and replaced them with the next gen of over engineered, plastic trash that tends to last less tha 100k.

Cash for junkers really screwed the market. These manufacturers were competing with the longevity of older vehicles and con the government into cash for junkers

Love Rover, but love my Toyota for day to day driving... what a shame you pay big bucks and you still get crap!

I always tell my fam when they think of buying a luxury car/suv "Either you can afford to fix or know how to fix" those should be the only two type of people that should own these cars. Otherwise you will suffer

I have a few customers with Range Rovers. None of them are wealthy, in fact I'm guessing they have a negative net worth due to their tendency to make bad financial decisions - buying a Range Rover chief among them.

The coolant crossover pipes have been an issue for these motors. The smart owners upgraded to the aluminum version for a couple hundred bucks vs replacing head gaskets and engines. But like that country song "its a little too late to do the right thing now".

Why the hell would anyone buy one of those suvs knowing you can do a quick search and find out how bad the suvs are. People just want to think they are rock stars driving them but usually rock stars have money to fix them.
