From following Darkflame over the past few years and patiently waiting for this game's return, the open source has been released since last year. Lego doesn't let them run servers, but you can run your own private server of you and even a few friends to play on. Also, DLU never planned to charge for Lego Universe, nor could they legally speaking since it would be profiting off of the property of Lego. This is why these revival projects like Club Penguin and Toon Town are and will always be free!
@@Carpengizmat Yep! Full game is available, but its a tad confusing to download. theres guides online tho on how to setup the game and a personal server.
While I love this channel, the videos, and you immensely, I find my self finding questions I would like to ask you. Most likely other people might feel the same so have you ever thought of doing a Q&A
Thank you! I'm very happy to hear that you find my content good :> I was thinking of doing a Q&A once I reach some sort of milestone, so it's definitely an idea that I have in the bank.
Reminded me of other cool games that I love that died b4 they could show their worth. (Chris Sawyers Locomotion and Netstorm are the two I think of initially.) Netstorm even has its own dedicated multiplayer fanmade community multiplayer now, which I love to see and proves that the lego universe open source could follow in the same footsteps.
I am here as a die-hard LEGO Universe fan who grew up with the game, and I have a few points to make here. Not criticizing, but merely adding to the points you already made. Ahem... First, the lore actually WAS pretty deep. You just needed to know where to look. There were various lore plaques that were scattered around the worlds that greatly expanded upon the overall story of the game, and LEGO themselves published a few articles that took deep-dives as well! (As much as the large fan that I am wants to actually spit all of it out right here, I think I'll save that for when someone asks me to. Please, ask me.) Second, pricing would have been a contributing factor, yes, but that are two other major points that also led to it's downfall. The first major one was moderation. LEGO wanted this to be a fun game for kids to play, but more than that, they wanted it to be a SAFE game for them to play, and we all know how hard it is for online games to stay, um, clean. But LEGO threw a boatload of work into making sure that nothing too disgusting would happen in the servers, from hotlisting words in the chat, to reviewing player and pet names, to even going so far as inspecting the Properties whenever someone uploaded one to make sure nothing inappropriate was built. (And from what I heard, that last one happened A LOT.) LEGO took the moderation extremely seriously, and while they did an excellent job and it was admirable what they were doing, it took a tremendous amount of time, effort, and money to keep it all up, and as more players would have joined, I can imagine it only would have gotten harder. The second major reason was the competition. Around the end of LEGO Universe's lifecycle, guess which game came out? Minecraft. And so suddenly, LEGO Universe didn't feel as appealing anymore, because it felt like anything it could do, Minecraft could do better. Even the Property building wasn't as cool as being able to completely tear the world apart and rebuild it from the ground up. So, it really felt like the game's fate was sealed after that. But the fanbase lives on. Yes, the game is niche and unheard of, but those who played it, loved it. And those of us who REALLY loved it, miss it to this day. For me, I loved the game so much, I'd even play it when I was just playing with regular LEGO bricks! It was that much of a childhood-defining game, I tell you! I'm still in the process of trying to find a good way to play Darkflame, but when I do, that will be a day of rejoicing! And finally, go find the game's soundtrack. Seriously, it's amazing! (Sorry about the essay. Just really love this game!)
Thanks for adding to that! I hardly remembered anything about it so obviously I was scrounging up information from various differing sources, so it's cool to have the opinion of someone who played it a lot and can remember it.
@@Carpengizmat Oh, rightly so! There were some BONKERS Properties that people built and programmed to perfection! Board games, an aquarium, or, for crying out loud, I once found one where the creator made a fully-functioning space base *that behaved exactly as the official worlds did!* It was AWESOME!
i remember completing the second world and it kept telling me to buy the subscription but 9 year old me didn't know what a subscription was and £9 was alot of money thats like 18 freddos

Nice! I might give it a go. Really curious to try out the plot editor if that's still available...
